Tbis made John Johnson's greenbax

between fire and teu limes their practical
value when he sank them in “boons,” and
made bis aocnal interest on every thirty-

Courtquently we are prepared to ap
preciate Jobn Johnson's indignation
when a Democratic Gongresa sought to
provide by law that these bonds might

paid with standard silver, worth, aa bo

lie had suffered before. In a spurt
of genno iBcotfideoco he bad invested in
some fancy Sontbern reconstruction
bonds at eight to ten cents on a dollar,
and either lost tbe whole or seen the
number of dollars cut down ens half.
Toero facts and grievances gave Jobn
a facility of expression amounting to tbe
bigbest order of eloquence. No man who
ever lived bad an equal sense of the im
portance of maintaining tbe public faith
>nd tbe traneoendant value of tbe honest
dollar. It is true, Jobn bad made an
enormous fortune out of a different kind
of dollars. He bpgan with bis salary aa
a Congressman, and bad rooted in tbe
lough of a “dishonest currency” till he
turnod tip a capital of a million or two
in gold; but still he could show by fig
ures and calculations on a shingle tbat
Democratic advocates of natiooal fraud
had cheated him out of millions. Ann
beyond a doubt the speculator short
anticipated profits is moro bitter than the
men who has lost all. It is said to bo a
fact tbat Honest John Sherman, now
down in Msine, otHi-bmiog tbo northern
lights on tbe subject of tbo “honest dol
lar,” has in fifteen years, out of bis five
thousand dollars salary as a Congress
man, accumulated one of tbe largest for
tunes in tho country, and yet we see how
bitter is his dissatisfaction. Many a man
would dieof mortification and rage to lose
five per cent. who. if be lost the whole,
might subside into a quiet, resigned and
Christian demeanor.
Such is mao, and such is that honest
dollar. The people of the United States,
by the timo tbo debt is all paid, will pay
tbo original investment scarcely leiS
than fifty times over—probably more—
and get not a cent back in taxer; but if
the last penny is missing the fuss that
honest John Sherman is notv making il
lustrates what will be tbe eanerquence.

Mr. Bussell, of Chatham, has intro
duced a bill into tho IIouso to create a
State Board of Health to prevent tbe
spread of cpidsmio diseases. Wo trust
he has some reasonable grounds for be
hoving tho proposed measure will suc
ceed. - t
It is most amazing that our law givers
in this enlightened sge, and when all tho
world is moving to arrest tho spread of
death dealing disease, should bo so et-ifi.-h
us to refuse to countenance a matter of
such vital importance to their constitu
ents. It can’t be Decauec in most cases tho
ortality is confined to large cities and
crowded thoroughfares. Surely no legis
lators can bo so supremely eelfiih. Tbo
true reason may bo a-crib-d to tbat mi—
jndgedeconomy, (why not say penuri-
oiisnes?,) which denies tho scanty pit
tance which might be tho means,
under Providence, of raving the lives
of hecatombs of human beings. Have
these gentlemen considered aright the
duties devolved upon tbem os conserva
tors of the pnblio safety ? Have they re
flected tbat io denying this boon to hu
inanity they array thcins-lves against
tbe combined medical wit dun of tbe
State and the deliberate opinion of the
most intelligent portion of the communi
ty? That this very sea ron, for lack of
proper advico and precautions, the de
stroying angel may appear among us,
carrying sadness and bereavement to
thousands of homes? Surely they have
not reflected sufficiently npen the gravity
of tho i-sues involved in tbe proposed in
stitution of this Board of Health. Why.
the single report of the present board,
under the editorial direction of the la
mented Nottiogbam, was worth donble
the cost of the potty sum voted for its
support. The article alone, upon the
proper construction of school houses and
their sanitary management, ought to hava
perpetuated the board, and doubled the
appropriation for its maintenance.
Intho name of advanced civilization
and the best interests of the people of
Georgia.we appeal to our General Assem.
bly to take prompt and efficient means
for the institution and permanent sup
port of n sanitary commission to be
composed of our best medical experts,
who shall be charged with tbe duty of
watching over the hygienic condition of
the State, and proposing such measures as
may be needful in times of sickness and

Aftar tbe long, weary winter at tbo
North when the snow still lies in the
clefts of Ibe rocks, in seclnded hollow g
and on mountain bights, ere tbe bnds of
their frntt trees begin to swell, to see
ripe, plnmp peaches, pears und apples
from tbe distant South presented at
tbeir market stalls is more than the
wealthy denizens of that frozen region
can withstand. Their months, disgusted
with codfish and Irish potatoes, water
for tbe luscioKB, juicy, rosy fruit of tho
South, fit food for toe gods. Hence, they
pitoQ in and buy, regardless of cost. In
a recent editorial letter, we stated that
Mr. Rumph, of Mirshallville, one of
Georgia’s champion fruit growers, ha 1
sold bis earliest peaches at tiro dollars
per dozsn, or thirty-five dollars per bush
el. And tbe demand could not be sup
plied even at tboso figures. It is a pro
verbial fact that no Northern evening
meal is considered complete without
cooked or unoooked fruit for the family.
But where can this luxury bo
had at certain seasons, save from
tbe South, in tbat ice clad country?
And consider tho myriads who require
thus to ha supplied. There is not tbe
least reason, therefore, to apprehend that
the market will ever be overstocked.
And even if it were, the recently invent
ed evaporator would soon put in mer
chantable shape the surplus fruit which
thus dessicated is itself a magnificent
source of revenue.
It was tba pleasure of tbs writer to

much intcicft all the proceedings of tho

its ranks nearly all of the most noted frni :

results of Governor Colquitt’s adminis

1. The floating debt of $350,000 has
be. n entirely extinguished.
2. Tne rate of taxation has been re
duced one-third.
5. The expenses ot all the State insti-
tions are d:miu:-hed. On tbo lunatie

will enlarge the asylum.
5 The expenditures in every fund, the

than ever known before.
7. Profound peace and good order rules

Ladra Lane, a negro girl of Valdosta,
who went to Liberia in 1877, returned to
her home last Friday morning. She
gives anything but a cheerfnl account of
her life in that model African Republic.
Among other things she says tbat “the
natives season everything very highly
with pepper, and when a child is born
among them thay stuff its mouth with
red pepper and gruel, and lay it out in
the sun for an hoar. They say it will
make it strong and healthy.” Also
she eays, “the natives are very hard on
onr people when they commit crime.”
She mentions the case of one Reuben
Cay ho, an emigrant from America, who
stole something from one of them, and
they caught him, titd a big rock around
his neck, and threw him in the river.
That was the last of him. She concludes
her recital by saying: “I am glad to get
back, and am satisfied ta remain in
America. Other colored people who want
tn try foreign countries can do so, and
learn by experience what I have ^earned.
I feel better since I have reaciud my own

A Virginia gentleman, just up from
Sau Francisco, confided corns of bis eape-
rence to a Chronicle reporter yesterday.
While at the biy no stopped at the Pal
ace Hotel and male a practice of drop
ping into tbe bar-room of tbat establish
ment of an evening, it being a retired and
rather high toned place. List Wednes
day evening t-e Coxstockor lounged into
the bar-room and was pleased to
behold there a3 the only occupants Sena
tor Sharon, Seth Csok, Tom Sanfeiland
and a tew other historic capitalists, sit-
ting at a large round tablp, in the centre
of whioh stood sundry bottles bearing the
mystical word “Roederer.” Pre ently a
middle-aged man, s:berly dressed in
black broad-cloth and wearing a ping
hat, daggered in from the hallway, and
lurching up to the bar yelled for every
body to come up and have something to
drink. Ths Sharon-Cook party paid no
attention to the boisterous new arrival,
bnt quietly went cn with their gossip.
Giving a furious whoop and smashing
his tile down on his head, the stranger
performed a war dance to the middle of
the room and declared himself. He was
a bad mac, he said, and al-
waga made it a practice to strew upon
the floor tbe bowels of any person
who declined,'to drink upon his invitation.
To point his remarks, tbe stranger wound
up by drawing an eighteen-inch Aikacsas
tooth pick from tbe back of his oollar and
advanced npon the table. There was a
stampede. Wtatn the Virginian peeped
up from behind tbe bar, to whicn posi
tion be had quietly and oalmly walked at
tbe beginning of tbe trouble, ne perceived
th-t Snaron and bis friends bad gone out

Yesterday Mr. F. B. Beville and Mrs.

Tne honl has been greatly modified
an improved in appearance, by the laying
of new floors, the building of tasty fron:

Mrs. Brown is well known and greatlv
respected as the relict of the late VY. F.

DR. C. McLANE’S

Ague
Is a purely vegetable bitter and powerful
tonic, and is warranted a speedy and cer
tain cure for Fever anti Ague, Chills
atul Fever, Intermittent or Chili
Fever, Remittent Fever. Dumb Ague,
l’erlotlieal or Ililious Fever, and all
malarial disorders. In miasmatic dis
tricts, the rapid pulse, coated tongue,
thirst, lassitude, loss of appetite, pain iu
tju, l, ; iek and loins, and coldness of tlio
spine and extremities, arc only premoni
tions of severer symptoms which termin
ate in the ague paroxysm, sueeeeded by
high fever and profuse perspiration.
It is a startling fact, that quinine, ar-
sonie, and other poisonous minerals form
the basis of most of the “ Fever and Ague
Preparations,” “Specifics,” “Syrups,”
atul “ Tonies,” in tbo market. Tito prep,
ar.itions made from these mineral poisons,
although they are palatable, and may
break the chill, do not pure, but leave lltf
malarial and their own drug poison j «
tlie system, producing quinism, dizzmesr
ringing in tbe ears, headache, vertigo, and
other disorders moro formidable than
the disease tliev were intended to cure.
Ayer’s Ague Cure thoroughly eradicates
these noxious jHiisous from the system,
and always cares tlie severest cases. It
contains no quinine, mineral, or any tiling
that could injure tlie most delicate pa
tient; and its crowning excellence, abovo
its certainty to cure, is that it lea\-es tho
system as free from disease as before tho
attack.
For Liver Complaints, Ayer’s Ague
Cure, by direct action on tho liver and
biliary apparatus, drives out tbo poisons
which produce these complaints, and
stimulates tho system to a a’igorous,
healthy condition.
VYe warrant it when taken according
to directions.
