below the Battery to-day in submarine
costume to recover an anchor, vras
drowned by the bursting of the pipe
which supplied him with air. He sig

raised to the surface he was dead, the

mouth and nose daring his last struggle.
All the Memphis refugees sent to the

er died to night at 8 o'clock. Jss. Hes
ter, the last of a family of 7, two of

a printer, was shot this afternoon by C.
B. Hammer. The wound ia not serious.

tradicc it, which caused Hammer to shoot

ings Bank, has been arrested on

with the alleged frauds committed by

Cairo, III, July 30.—John Hogan,
count,' cons table, to-day shot and killed
Charles D. Artur, ex-chief of police. Ar
ter was seated reauiog a newspaper when
Hogan approached him from behind, and
fired the fatal shot without a word of
warning. Hogan was taken to jail.

Nashville,-Tenn., July 30.—Dr. J. D.
Plunkett, President of the Sanitary
Council of the Mississippi Valley, to-day
received the following di. patch from
the mayor of Centre Point, Iowa: The
report sent abroad of our having cholera
at this point ia entirely false. We have
a number of oases of dysentery, proving
fatal only among children of the first and
second summers.
