Wiikslino, W. Va. August 4—A fire
broke out at VoleaDO, a town of 2.000
inhabitants in Wood county in this State,

to feed upon, as water cannot be had in

Westchester, Pa., Aagast 4.—The
town of Msrsuallton, foar miles from

creaking oat of five incendiary fires in
different parts of the town. Attempts
were made to fire three or fonr other
buildings with keroagne oil, bnt failed.
Tho buildings destroyed were mostly

Ooden, Utah, August 4.—A report
Saturday that Geo. Q. Cannon, Brigham
Young, Jr., and Albert Covington, exee-
ntors of Brigham Yoang’a estate, Cad
given bends and been released, was a
mistake. They failed to give bonds, wild lauds for 1877; with not giving car
and dwellings were consumed for want
of time to remove them. The fire was
undoubtedly the work of an incendiary.
Thera were two attempts mads a short
time ago to bum tho town, and since
that time a watchman was pnt on all
night, and had just gone oil duty when
the fire was discovered. The total loss
will reach J75,000 ard tho insurance, as
near as can be ascertained, $13,000.

called and the journal of Friday read ana
approved. Tne proceedings wore mostly
rontine. and no important matters came
before tho body.
THE HOUSE.
The House met pursuant to adjourn
ment—Speaker Bacon in tho chair. After
the usual preliminary txeroises, the read
ing of bills the firs: time uaa proceeded
with and a number of bilb were read
and appropriately referred.
Among the bills passed was one author
izing the Bibb Count; Commissioners to
pnrcftaae the Wiley turnpike. This bill
has passed its third reading in tho Honso,
arid now goes to the Senate
At 12 o’clock the roport of the com
mittee of thirteen appointed to investi
gate the charges against Comptroller
Goldsmith was taken up on motion of
Mr. Phillips, of Cobb.
The report was made in three distinct
parts, and included sixteen counts against
tho Comptroller. Tho majority roport
was read first, by Mr. S. W. Small, clerk
of tho committee.
Among the charges were the follow

derived from the State for wild lands.
With speculating in wild lands through
his brother-in-law Thomas L. Swift; with
altering and falsifying the records of the
office through his clerks, James L. Gold

the transaetior; with taking illegal
ousts for wdd land fi. fas.; with de
positing funds from the sale of
wild lauds in a bank iu Atlanta, to his
personal credit, and drawing on: the same
ou hi* personal cheek, instead of turning
the said foods over to the Treasurer of
the State, acoordiog to law; with making
false returns, and with fraudulently re
porting the amount of tax received on

New Orleans, Angust 4.—New oases

New Orleans, August4.—About half-
past ten o'clock this morning, as Goneral
Badger wa3Bsaending one of the side en-

tho main building of the Custom House,
bo was soddenly met by William Brown,
ex-metropoiitau policeman, who, with the
rem irk ‘T’ve got yon now,” drew a re
volver and fired at the head of tho col
lector. Seeing the man’s movement,
Collector Badger caught his arm and di
verted the shot over his shoulder, and
then took tho pistol away from Brown
and threw it below. Brown lost a leg on
the 14th of Saptember, 1S74, under
Badger. He was among Bradger’s first
appointees as postmaster. Becoming
collector. Badger left Brown in the post-
office, where he failed to remain. The
collector thinks Brown was crazed by pov
erty, and seems unwilling to proseeme
him. Brown evidently thinks General
Badger stoeld have given him a place in
the Custom House.
Boston. Angust 4.—Rev. W. H- H-
Mnrray, a well -known divine of this
city and editor of the Golden Pule, has
become insolvent and his property has
been attached for debt. He left tho city
some days ago for Chicago. The biilure
causes much comment.
St. Iituis, Angust 4 —Health Com
missioner Franois issued a speoial. order
this morning to quarantine officers to
hereafter stop at that station, every
learner'from ports below Cairo,to report
each arrival to him and to release no
vessel except upon his order.
No new eases of fever have developed
at quarantine, nor are there any snt-pi-
eions ones known to be in the city. Tne
weather is getting excessively warm again
snd several mild cases of sunstroke oc
curred yesterday. The mercury reached
nicety-seven yesterday at 2 o’olook and
to-day ranged from ninety-fonrto ninety-

Alabama’s First Bala.
Mobile, August 4.—The first bale of

Wilcox county, Alabama. It was classed

from yellow fever occurred in Hivana
last week, being an increase of twenty
from too week before. Tho total number
of deaths in Havana from y-Mow t.-ver
during the month of July is 537 against
504 for tho same month last year. Since

of impeachment against IV. L. Goldsmith,
Comptroller Gsueral, reported this morn-
iDg rixteen articles upon which they xe
commend that he be presented at tho bar
of the Senate. The charges cover, among
other matters, an alleged defalcation of
over 611,000. This ereated some sensa
tion, a* the oharacter of the Comptroller
General stood above reproach. The
Ilonseordered the necessity preliminary
proceeding*, which will be pushed for
ward withont delay.
Yellow Fever.
Memphis, August 4—B’iftesn new cases
in all were reported to the Board of
Health to-day. Among them are Absalom
Boyd and wife, Fred and Robert Holland
er, Mrs. George Gel* snd son, Catherine
L .rkin. Michael aud Kate Holly. One ad
ditional death has occurred, Rev. Father
Doyle, a Catbolio Prie*i, who came to
Memphis lust December to resume the
charge of Fitzpatrick Church, at corner
of Desota and Linden streets. He had
taken quite an active part in tha wore of
moving his people oat of the city to
Catnp Fa'hew Mathews. He was pros
trated with the fever las: Thursday, and
was progressing favorably until yester
day afternoon, when, during the tempo
rary absence of his nurse, he arose from
his bed. and was fonni by the attending
phyeican working at hts desk. A re-

waich resulted in his death at 4 o’clock
this afternoon. The deceased was thirty
years old, and was formerly located at
Jackson, Tennessee.
