Gold Shipments to America—Paris
Credit—New# from South
Africa
London, August 7.—Financial articles
published in tbe papers this morning
state that the withdrawal of gold from
the Bank of England yesterday for the
United Slates was the probable precursor
of lirger sbipmests in payment for the
quantities o^ American produce arriving
here and in Francs, and that the steady
decline in the rates of exchange has
pointed to such a movement in bullion
for some time past. It is understood
that tbe Back ot England holds a large
amount in American eagles.
The Paris Credit Fonder yesterday
opened a sut scrip • i tor one million ob
ligations-, ai titty fr .ccs each, on account
ot the city ot Paris and suadry other
Freoch municipalities. It is understood
that the issue was covered more than
eight times in Paris alone.
The colliers of Lanarkshire, Scotland,
have agreed to work only four days in
each week. This movement, together
with the already greatly reduc ed supply
of coal, has caused the first upwiid
movement in price which baa been re
corded on tbe Glasgow Cool Exchange
for three years.
It. is expected that tho collieru will im
mediately demand .in iacreise of wages.
