Nasbvills, August 8 —Smith and
Hall, murderers of Major Pugh, at Mur'
freesboro. some time ago, having appeal
ed to Ihe December term of the Snprem
Court, were not hanged to-day as they
were eentenc-d to bs by the lower court.
They are in the Murfreesboro jail, where
they will remain until a final hearing
before the Supreme Court.

the famous English swimmer, will under
take next Wednesday to swim from
Sandy Hoad to Manhattan Beach, a dis

tance if necessary.

cases ot fever were reported this morn
ing, including eight colored. Among the
whites are Sarah Flag aud her daughter
Anne. Five deaths from the fever have
occurred sinos last night: Anna Flag,

Lawis Palmer, tbe latter colored. The

Mimphis. August 8 —Twenty-two cuse3
in all, eight white and fourteen colored
were reported to-day. Three additional
death have occurred, Msrtin O’Leary,

ored. Major W. W. Gay, n prominent

and late member of tho Board of Fjlicc
and Fire Commissioners, was prostrated
with the fever yesterday, but his Bjrap

points made by counsel, the Judge denied
the motion for a now trial. The suit was

Bank Troubles m Montreal.
Montreal, August 8.—The exettement
over the bank trouble is increasing as
the people come to learn of the suspen
sion of the Ville Marie bank. The Direct
ors asset t that tho bank is able to pay all
its Iiabtlitiies within a reasonable time,
and still have a considerable amount of
capital for the shareholders. The capital
stock of the bank is ene million, nearly
all paid up.
It has three hundred thousand of its
bills in circulation and seven hundred
thousand on deposit. The run upon the
City and District Savings Bank increases
and as the depositors nearly all belong to
the working classes it is the moat serious
that has taken place. Its deposits ag
gregate three m’llion.

meet their engagements. The members
of the firm were out of towyi. It wai

creditors. The failure is said to be due
to the decline of about thre6 cents per
pound.
