Second Sireat Brldke.
Editors Telegraph and Messenger: I
notice a paragraph in a recent Irene, that
some ot onr citizens had suggested the
change of name for Second street to that
of '‘Monumental” street. I think if this
change should meet with popnlar favor,
would not "Monument” sound better
than "Mokumental” ? But ia this connec
tion there is something of more impor
tance to this street, as well as to the
whole busioess interests of our city, a
need long felt. O.ir present bridge over
the Ocmulgeo liver is teo far removed
from the centre of the city for any prac
tlcal purposes. We should have another
at the foot of Second street, or jionu.
rnent street if yon please, by which the
citizens of Jones can more r. adily re-ai l
the business centre of Macon. A good
iron bridge can be built and fully fioished
tor $15,000 at the outside. Tnis is not
a large sum for onr real estate
owners and merchants to raise.
Let the amount be subscribed
at once, form a stock company, issuing
certificates of etock to all who subscribe,
they holding tbe same nntil the financial
condition of our city becomes in a good
and sound condition, which it will wb -n
the funding Bill, now before tbe Legisla
ture, is in tall operation. Tnen oar oity
fathers could redeem e-id stock by pur
chase cf the bridge at its original co t.
npon a vote of the citizens, and even if
this was never done the investment
would repay all the property owner, end
merchants in the business oentre of Ma-
oon.
Is it not as good a time ss any to take
the matter in hand? Who, among our
enterprising business men, will consu
late themselves a cimmittee tj see what
can be raised towards this project of acch
vital interest,? Let the ball be put in
motion at onoe. We believe it can be
accomplished. CiricxsM.

The most extensive and most widely
known fishery on the river was at the
Wicked ahnsls.
Oppovite fraction lot No. 313, there is
a suoceseioa of rhoals and falls near to-
getner.
A* the=e shells Ntelham Mim 3 , Luke
J. Morgan, C. W. Blines snd others had
fisheries. People came from for and
near to purchase 2<b, and during the
-had season both rides of tbe river look
ed like a camp meesin;, for shad were
sold by tne wagon load, eight to tne dol
lar or a seven-pence apiece. Here all
r art of people a-a-inibled, and gambling
became very fashionable, os it is, too often
at our fashionable watering places.
Here the celebrated Bennott, with hia
‘•Thimble Game,” used to play his voca
tion. It woe very natural to call this
place the '* Wicked Shoals.” (
O-r former much reap ctedfellow'cit.zen,
M»j. W.D. William-,* told an amueing an
ecdote of his experience there during hts
biyhsod. Hie mother, living in Jones
county, sent him horseback, and armed
with a good sized wallet to purchase fi=h.
They were plentiful and cheap.
There was as usual a large crowd on
hand. Bennett was there manipulating
the thimbles. Major, then a mere boy,
watched the game with attentive inter
est. He saw him move the thimbles
about, and put a gram of corn under one.
"I’ll bet any m*di a dollar that ho can’t
tell which thimble tne corn is under.”
foe Major said : "I saw the corn put
undck the thimble and looked npon it as
a dead sure thing, and I ihongbt I had
just as well make a dollar that way as
any other and quickly responded, ‘I’ll
take that be..’ ‘Plank down your mon-
ez. sir,’ toys Bennett, nnd I did plank
down some of ihe money I brought to
buy flib with." Tee thimble was raised,
aid sure enough tbe gram of corn wa3
not there. ‘‘You must look sharp young
an Hid trv your luck again—watch the
game i little and you will be more ex-
p Jrti *’ was the eomoUtua tout the
t-h-irpT gave our hero ns he pocketed
tne monoy. U- did watch for some time
w.thsut betting, guessed right every
time. It occurred to him tbn; uo ought
to win his money back and a little more
too, as be had studied the game and felt
liki one of the ‘‘knowing uueB." Ben-
n it hocns-ed-pocu-e.- l again and called
for another bet. M-jor put down his
pile and lost. Said he, “I was mortified,
. mi -d t . go il >ir. ■ ..Ithour flab, and I
did not like tho idia of facing my moth
er." Some gentlemen preseDt, seeing
his dstres-, filled his wallet with shad
and sent him on his way rejoiciDg, a wi
ser if II <t » bitter boy.
Huy years thereifter, Major oame
Kith his family to spend the day at onr
house. Some of us went with him to
vi,it tho sceno of his boyish adventure
and he told tne story with tbit ioimita
bio humor for which he was celebrated.
Half a mils above Wicked Shoals and
opposite Fractional lot No. 31-4, juat
above tho month of Langford creek, was
a ferry.
It was established by Mullins, then
sold to Samuel Tompkins, subsequently
it was kept by James Boquemore. This
was a popnlar ferry, and at one time it
rented for $1,0C0 a year. H. H.
Howard, who married a daughter cf
Sam Tompkins, h id a grocery store on
tbe Bibb side of the river, and, for a
while, was ferryman. Here Bennyan
Howard, while under the influence of
“spirit-," jumped into the river with hia
clothe- i n, to race with the ferry boat,
and wa* drowned. Near this ferry are
□ow traces of the old Indian trail, mark
ed on the Land Surveyor’s Plot, and
signs of an Indian town, and the wig.
warn where some old expert made and
repaired arrow heads.
A MURBKLITB.
Between the Ferry nnd Shoals are sev
oral islands. There i* also a splendid
spring, which gushes from a rock in
deep gorge within a few feet of the riv
er.
Near the spring there is a large cave
to be entered from the side next ihe river.
Thete is a well established tradition that
in this cave, one of the elm of John A.
Mans'., the famous To!.n-\->.-.<- rubber,
who was as notorious in this country for.
ty or fifty years ago, as Claude uuv.il
or William Nevison were in the 17th cen
tury, concealed a horse that he had stol
en from soma one then living on part of
the land now owned by Robert Coleman.
The Mnrrelite had first stolen a negro
man, bis wife and child and concealed
them on the largest one of the islands
just above Wicked Shoals. They -ere
dectined for the Mississippi swamp, Mur-
rel’s head quitters, to be sold nnd restol
en os often as practicable, according to
tho Q3aal practice of the CUn, with the
promise of a division of the money and of
being carried to a free State, but really,
to use Mnrrel’a words, “dead men tell no
tales,” they war - to bs eventually mar.
tiered, ripped i pm, filled with stones and
thrown into some convenient stream. In
this instance, tho horse, a large one, with
a peculiarly marked foot, waa tracked to
the cave and recovered, the robber fled
and the negroes came out from the hidio^
place and w.re restored to their owners.
Hence the name, “Nigger Island,” was
given to the island nearest tbe northeast
uank of the river, which it has ever since
borne. There was another ferry above
Mullins’ called Lowis’ Ferry. Here
many cf tho first comers of the ‘'New
Purchase' crossed the Ocmulgee. There
wis a store on the bank of the river near
tno Ferry, which was need as a private
trading post with tho Indians and with
th • frontiersmen of Jones oounty. The
ato-fc of goods and the store house be
longed to a man who lived in Sparta,
H lucock county, and employed the ferry
man, William Waller, to superintend his
business. Waller must have been an nu-
princ.pied .-eimp, for he deserted his
wite snd married an Indian squaw, is or
der to become popular with her tribe and
-ecure their trade. On Saturday night
during the Harrison freshet, William
Waller, turn by the name of Heyser,
James Edwards and a negro were in the
store. Tne while men were drinking
and gambling at a late hour in the night,
when the water rose m the store.
They climbed into the loft, the water
followed them there, and they crawled
ooc on top of tbe houee, which soon
ti* trd down the river for some distance
and lodged ng. cst a tree, where, on the
nit day the neighbors beheld the extra-
urd n iry speeta.de of a house floating on
the river with font men astride the top.
Elwards was very much frightened, and
p eyed in-’essaDtIy, Heyser, who had
teizedthe jag of whiskey at the first ap
proach of the water and still clung to ir,
ca! ed to the people that had assembled
on the bank, "For God sake save Ed
wards, I’m all right,” as he imbihed
‘•salvation” frem his “little brown jug.”
Lnmber was procured and a beat built,
bet no cne could be found who would
Venmre to go to tbe relief cf the boose
wrecked meo until Tuesday morning,
whenE.l, afsithtul servan: b.-longing to
Edwards, arrived. He, without hesita
tion, seized the Lost and rescued his mas
ter and his companions rrotn their port
ions situation. These men hod nothing
to eat from S.tutdsy night until Tuesday
morning, and had lived daring that time
on Heyser’s jog o: spirit*, which he
ciaog to until tne Hst. Toe house went
to pi-Ct s n 1 the men climbed the tree
against which it had drifted.
- This wa* washed up, as wa3 also sev
eral otb - tree* into which they had
olimber, before the boat was brought to
th«ir reJi-r.
Ten years ago thst same faithful ne
gro, BU Edward*, and there were many
use him in onr S'.u’hera country, waa
living, and was ma h respected by all
who knew him.
