The signal corps station Norfolk Va.,
reports to the chief signal officer as fol
lows: The oaptam of schooaer E. H.
Pray, reports that he carried away his
mainmast yesterday afternoon 6 miles
north of Cape Henry with all its attach
ments. Lost the yawl boat at the same
tim% The echooner was from New York
for Norfolk with a general cargo. She
arrived without other serious damage.

Charleston line, having received a thor
ough overhauling and repaing preoeeded
to sea yesterday on a trial trip, and re*
turned in the afternoon. The trip war
entirely successful and encouraging.

Fire *t I’etersbnrg.
Petkbsbobo, August 10.—This morn
ing the grocery . store of B. H. Stevenr
was discovered to be on fire, and before
the dames coal I be extinguished the
stock, valued at $5,000, was almost en
tirely destroved, l’he budding was the
property of O. G. Morgan, and was par
tially consumed. The stock was insured
for $2,000, and tha building for $3,690.
Th* store was first robbed and then set
oa fire.

rest was driven by John Murphy, ani
made the fastest mile that waa ever
trotted in the world yesterday afterne u
on a three-quarter mile track, oa Mr.
Bonner’s farm near Tarrytown. Tie
first qnurter waa made in 321: the fir t
half in 1:051; three quarters in 1:38} and
the fall mile in 2:11}. There were three
watches neld ou time. The fastest watch
made the mile in 2:llJ, and slowest in
2:12. Consequently the time according
to rule ia 2:11}.

Affairs at Memphis.
Memphis, August 10.—Twenty-nine
oases were reported—twelve white and
seventeen colored. Among tho former

Austin W. Dowell, Arthur White, Dr.
Oscar Bartz, W. B. E.-wm and Carrie
Williams.
Five deaths have occurred: Filz Set-
hick, Wichart Dwye, Martha Wood, Eva
Nowiand and J. Clements.
Dr. S.jH, Collins this morning was sent
for from Forrest Hill, Tenn„ 18 miles
from Memphis ou tho Charleston Ball
road, whera two cases of fever have de
veloped in tho family of Mr. Stoat. Dr.
Collins will investigate and report what
connection their sickness has with tbe
fever here.
Ed. Sohloes was prostrated to day with
fever. His case has not been reported,
bat there is scarcely a doubt as to tbe
natnee of his illness. He was an aotivs
worker daring the epidemic of last year,
bnt esoaped the fever.

Washington, Augnst 11.—Dr. Bil
lings, Vice President of tha National
Board of Health, telegraphed Dr. Jerome
Coohrane at Memphis to day aa follows

the commencement, nrged the same ad
vice through Dr. Mitch: II, andussfnr-
niehed funds to carry it out noil do tbe
evork. The 8:ata Board has legal author
ity. This Board oia only give advice

the State Board needs more means it will
doubtless inform ns. Continue to urge

Cairo, August 11.—The quarantine
inspector’s boat Hansaudt, was to-day
anchored m tho Missusippi near the head
of island No. 1, and hereafter all up
steamboats will be inspected there, in
accordance wi-h the rales of the National
Board of Health. The inspecting officer
ia instructed in case any steamer n fus s
to submit to inspection, to telegraph the
fact to station above, in order to provont

cision as to the proposed reintroduction
of a bi-metalic standaid.
Lindoh, August 11.—Private letters
from AleEmdiia state that one Mitzim, a
broker and naturalized American citizen,
recently attacked Dnbar Fashs, oonfiaeu-
tial agent of the ez-EhediVd Ismail
Pasha, ne»r the Bourse, in oonseqoence
of a orivate grudge. Mirzim struck Da-
bar Pasha with a cane. The latter'fled
and Mirzam then shot him dead. Mir
zim surrendered himself to the authori
ties aud is now in prison.

Memphis, August 11.—Thirty-four
cases in all—twenty whites and fourtoen
colored—were reported to-day. Among
them are E. J. Hastings, Ed Scloss, Wm.
Castello, Henry VY. Jonnson and Johnson
Ostemann. Two add:dona! deaths have
occurred—both colored. At a meeting
of the exeentive committee this afternoon
committee of three was appointed to
confer with various ministers regarding
the propriety of closing churches aud
discouraging any large public assem
blages which are calculated to spread
yellow fever. Dr. S. A. Collins, who
had been sent to Forest Hill to investi
gate cases of fever at that point returns
to-day and reports one person, refugee
from Memphis, down with fever. Every
precaution has been taken to prevent its
spreading by isolating dwellings.
Major Gay’s condition to-night is ex
tremely critical. He had black vomit
this afternoon. Ed Moon is better; Miles
wen shows no improvement. A. Jl.
Eejnolds is better. The conrier and
Paul Bees, check boy in the Western
Union Telegraph office, were stricken
this afternoon. The thermometer to
day marked 82 degrees.
