Festival In East Macsn.
In But Mioan, n little back from the
present town, is au old cemetery which
was mol a.▼ oral generations since by
thou who founds! the city of Macon
and sotn >of whoso posterity now live in
tos city. In it sense of the noblest of the
first cittxons of the place are laid. The
ciui dory has bsou sally neglected, how
ever, ao 1 deoiy and ruin are visible ev
ery whore.
Some of th i noble ladies of Esst Macon
have undertaken the task of reclaiming It
and t to first step taken is to enoloss It in

work.
The ntate Fair.
Tho arrsng. mt ata for the State Fair in
Macon go steadily forward, andtbo con'
st.antly improving prospects are gratify-
lug to thoeo in charge of the enterprise.
There are frequent inquiries from all pares
of '.he t-cuMuru p rt ; n or the State in
regard to tho F.nr, showing the deep in
terest felt in its prospects all over that
portion jof Georgia. The tutf sports a,
this fair will be unsurpassed by those of
any of the fairs which have been given,
and a largo number of elegant stock
from the North and West will step proud
ly over onr magnificent track. Among
the hordes which will in all proba
bility be on hand may be mentioned
tbe following a North Carolina
horses: Santnoky, Ora B., Lady Gold
smith, Melite G., Luis, and Meohlen-
bnrg. The first font are Abdn! Koreee'
colts and tho last Planet's. Abdnl Ko

milr heat has, me understand, never been
beaten, and some very fast time may be
expect id from the North Carolina thor-
ongbbr.de. These horses have left Char
lotte and are now in training at Ogle
thorpe Park, at Atlanta. They will come
after the fair at that place to the State
Pair in Maoon.

Sparks returned from the North last

manner.

The memoratla fire on the seventeenth
of July was a great calami y to onr city,

and unlimited credit of eeveral of onr

AU of the burnt ont parties sre at work
.gain elsewhere, a::d one of the firms,
that of Messrs. O. H. Rigcrs A Cc., are
hiving constructed for them an ima e i e
brick store on the site of the former
building, which they expect to have oom-
pUttd by October.
Bnt the object of this article Is to make
pirticnlar mention of the drag home of
Messrs. Hant, It inkin A Lamar, as they
hive already been re-habilitated in every
a. ore of the word, and are now in full
blast, and marching on with inerea'ed
momentum in the road to fortune. Toe
disastrous coufl igration ailaded to, iu a
brief space of time, swept away no les.
than forty-five tbouaand dollar-’ worth of
valuable drugs and other goods owned by
this firm. Upon the same, there was a
partiallr.enranoe only. Yet we find tbem >
by noon of the oime day, when the fires
were still glowing, and all was panic and
oonfaaion, calmly leasing the two com
modious -tores on Second street, Nos*
66 and 68. next to the larga book
establishment of Messrs. J. W. Barke A
Co., and quietly removing thither the
small remnant of goods that had been
raved. To obtain possession of these de
sirable and ex.ensive premises."they did
not hesitate to pay a handsome bonna to
tbe occupants, and were so fortunate ae
to secure a lease cf them for five years,
locln ling the immense cellar, they com
prise throe stories ronning back over
hundred feet, and peculiarly adapted to
tho business of the lessees. To work
□pon them they went at oncu with
multitude of hands, removing partitions
putting in long rows of shelving, erecting
elevators, paintiDg. fnrbiahing and bsau
tifyicg everything until tbe wholo nron
within had been transformed into mag.
nificent stores which would grace any
city in the Union.
In the meantime, albeit, as it were
with their scanty slock scudding under
bare poles, they yet happily, by the aid
of the branoh establishments of the par.
ent house in Atlanta and elcowhere, con
tinued to fill with but the trifling delay
of a day or two, all orders for goods tha
kept coming in from remote sections
whioh had nob as much as hoard of tho
calamity that had befallen them.
The telegraph und mails also were
kept busy transmitting long
ders from day to day for an entiro
NEW STOCK OV GOODS,
oovering every article known to tho drag
trade, besides hundreds of notions in the
shape of toilet soaps, brushes, ptrfnm.
ery, stationery, oto., etc., and patent mtd
icines, paints, oil9, kerosene, instruments
of various kinds, and other thinga too te
dions to mentioix.
These have been pouring in for several
weeks, like an avalanche, taxing to tho ut
most the entire foroeof clerks and em
ployeea from six a. m., nntil two
To nnpack, assort, mark, and display in
its proper place every article as fast as
received, has been the Herculean task of
tho proprietors and their assistants. In
this work Mr. L. W. Hunt, and bis able
lieutenant, Mr. Henry Lamar, Jan.,have
been indefatigable and tireless. Like of
fiosrs of a real army, they have directed,
ordered and then led the van in the ao
oamplishment of tb6 work cn hand.
Tho rcsnlta achieved havo indeed been
extraordinary. Order has been educed
from chaos. A magnificent and perfect
ly new stock, for which tho proprietors
havo paid on the nail
PORT! THOUSAND DOLLARS,
and which cannot be surpassed in extent
or quality sooth of Richmond, has been
opened, assorted and deftly arranged and
displayed to the best advantage tothead-
miring gazs of their patrons and the pno-
lio. All-din’s wonderful lamp oonid
hardly havo accomplished more. And
what is moat surprising, at this dull sea
son of tho year, the baiineas of the firm
of Hant, Rankin A Lamar, instead of un
dergotngan eclipse from the sodden ca
lamity which befcl them, is increasing
surely and steadily. On change they ara
a tower of strength, and even while the
mbera of their immense establishment
ware still smoking, and, amid tho ooc-
lernAtion and dialress of that ornoial pe
riod, they cintrivei to honor every draft
made upon them as serenely as when io
the noy day of their prosperity. What
better evidence oonid be afforded of the
strength and solvency of this firm, which
is an honor to tho city of Macon?
WHAT THEY HAVE DONE.
To giro some conception of the recent
operations of the honso of Hunt, Rankin
A Lamar, we append in conclusion the
following succinct stat'etics, which aro
strictly reliable.
They employ in their Macon and At
lanta establishments one hundred hands.
They have seven active traveling agents.
They sell nearly fonr thousand barrels
of kerosene per annum.
It requires about fifty thousand boxes
and packages to send off their sales for a
single year.
In one day they received from the
Macon and Brunswick Railroad no less
than six hundred boxes of drugs.
Their sales for a year have footed np in
tbe neighborhood of a
HALT MILLION
of dollars.
And now, with confidence they offer to
the trade one of the largest stocks to be
found in the South, every portion of
which is strictly fresh and just from the
hands of tho manufacturer. Their goods,
too, having been bought at bottom prices,
they cannot be und reold, bnt on the
contrary, think they are able to offer
better indacements to their friends and
the public than any drng store in the
State. We feelproad of this representa
tive Macon firm, and trust that its energy
enterprise and business integrity will find
as hitherto its meet reward from an sp
prociating community.

Georgia State Gazetteer.
The Georgia Stale Gazetteer, published
by A. E. Sfaole- & Co., we feel nj hesi
tation in prncocncing by far the beat
work of its kind ever pabiiahed ia Geor
gia. It is oomprehenaive, io fact com
plete, and contains information of a vas!
amount in its 934 pages.
The woxk includes a revised map of
tao Sut* especially prepared for the Ga
ztlleer; the government of the State, in
cluding a list of the General Assembly,
the judiciary throughout tbe State, conn-
ty officers, a description of tbe islands,
the railroads of the State, the rivers;
liet of three thousand of the moat promi
nent farmers of the Slate, arranged a!:
phabetically as to their post-office address
an alphabetical arrangement of all the
cities, towns, villages and hamlets, wheth
er podt**3ffio39 or not, with a brief de-
ucripticn of each, and an alphabetical list
of all the business and professional oiti<
/-ns therein; a classified directory com
prizing a liet of all the trades, proles
tiions and pnrsails of the State arranged
alphabetic illy and by post-offices.
The entiro arrangement of the work is
to ailord avast amount of information in
a compact and convenient form, in such
a way that it can be readily obtained.
Tne work will be found particularly use
ful to a very largo class of citizens in
nearly every calling. In such a large
work, extending in its scope over the en
tire S:ate, there mu*t of course be some
errors. They are, however, fe w compara
tively, and the caro bestowed upon its
compilation m&kes it far better than
could be reasonably expected. The me
ch&nical execution « excellent.
Messrs. Sholes Sc Co., can well
proud of their labors, and should be
thanked for supplying a want long felt
by many of our business men.
Liveliness on Second at.
A difficulty occurred on Second street
yesterday in which one of the parties
was severely hit over tho head with
brick, making tbo blood flow quite freely*
It occurred on the sidewalk.
It arose out of a small buainess trace
action. Officers Pennell and Wrye ar
rested both of the parlies, and the matter
will probably come before the County
Court to-morrow.
There was considerable excitement
over the difficulty at the time.
Another difficulty occurred at the corn
er of Third and Cherry, aboat dark, in
whtch tho same policemen were the ar
resting officers.
