make him a close observer in these mat
ters, remarked to one of our prominent
contractors, after going thoronghly over
the city, that no auen amount of building
was going on in either Cnarlotte, Colum
bia, Augusta, Cnarleeioa or Savannah.
Xbe contractors of the city are very
cheerful at tbe ontlook and all have
much as they can attend to.
Macon is on the up grade, and ths In
dications are that she will not be content
with the work of this Season, but tne
footsteps of her progress will be steadily
forward.
The fiaest improvement now going on
is the 6plenatd establishment of Meesers
Nuisbaum and Dsnenburg, which is be
ing erected at tbe corner of Third and
Cherry streets. It will not to*t lee
than thirty thousand dollars, will b-
fonr stories high and finished in 11 usur
ps-a tl style.
Oa Cherry street, Mr. G. B. Roberts is
having erected a very fine two story
store boose for Messers. C. H. Rogers A

establishments in the city, costing about
ten thousand dollars when completed.

value of tbe property.
Tbe wall around Messrs. Campbell A
Jones’ warehouse has been torn down and
replaced with brick, amounting to the
building of a new warehouse.
In residences, quite a large number are
being put up. At the oorn.r of Mnlber

traotiva brick residence finished ia the
latest style, with mansard roof, witn
about ten rooms.

Bartlett, who is having finished up a
handsome house just at the head of

ments of a home. It will be a two-story
frame building with eight rooms.

reached completion on Washington Ave
nue, and will be a residence of conven
ience and oomfort.

ful residenoe added to its already hand
somely lined sides, in a new house bnilt
for Mr. F. S. Johnson. It will be of a
popular style and quite attractive.
On Georgia Avenne, beyond the Female
College, Rev. J. W. Burke has jnst com
pleted a very pretty oottage residenoe of
about six rooms. In the rear, on several
streets in that portion of the city. Dr.
Collins has had erected two or three cot
tage hoaees.
One of the prettiest residences now
processof erection is thst of Mr. N. K.
Winstip, oa Johnson street, on the lot of
Mrs. Saasdorf. It is a one-story ref
ill bs finished in thorough
dance, bat
style.

Hall has a new two-story six room house
rapidly approaching completiin.
Cnerry and Magnolia streets also pre
sent visible signs of the march of im-
provem-nts.

old rookery near the intersection of Fitst
and Cherry streets, and is replacing it
with what will bean ornamental residence
of a number of rooms.

his new residence a few yards farther np
the street.

airabid house: a large amoaut of work
having been done in tho way of remodel
inft and improving.
a i£r. Ei. HDguemn’a residence, it baB
been completed acme time, and is a de*
cid-d impiovement to Magnolia atreet.
Oa the same atreet Mrs. Washington
has not long since had a convenient frame
residence constiucfeJ.
In E*et Bfaoon Mr. Cutter has built a
ooay residence on the commanding hil
fronting on the green. Mr. Gaernaey
hna pnt up for himself on Troup Hill,
near the old armory property, two very

house and a large blacksmith shop,
In the Southwestern portion of the
city a large number of cottages and un

finished, are ia tho neighborhood of the
armory.
On Ash, Elm, Jackson and Eoucdary
street®, some of the prettiest small
houses, ranging from foar to seven rooms,
are to be seen, and that portion of the
city near Tattnal Square and Merce:
University is improving quite rapidly.
The foregoing enumeration does not in
elude an extensive amount of repairing,
remodeling and improving.
The Lanier House, the National Hotel
the residences of Mr. Walter B. Hill on
Bass’ Hill, Mr. S. M. Sabers’ house on
Pine street, Mr. C. P. Roberts residence,
Col. I. Haidiman and Dr. J. P. Holme*
in Vineville and other residences not
called to mind have all had valuable
and costly additions and repairs.
The amount of work now going on
estimated by the most intelligent con
tractors of the oity, based on itemizsd
lists of improvements, at one hundred
and twenty thousand dollars. This is
good showing for Maoon, especially when
it is remembered all the work being done
will be promptly paid for in nearly every
instance, and the etyle of improvements
is of that substantial yet ornamental ohar-
ao'.er which adds wealth as well as beamy
to the oity.
Funeral of .Vfr. Eugene 8. Bartlett.
On Sunday morning, from the First
Baptist Church, tho funorel of Mr. Eu"
geno S. Bartlett took place. The
church Mas quite full of friends who
gave their presence in testimony of the
reoucuL for tne deceased and tne mourn
ing family.
The choir rendered in a te nder man*
ner that beautiful hymn, ‘‘Come ye dia
consolate,” after which Dr, Brantly, of
Mercer University, offered a most fer
vent, touching prayer. The singing of
a hymn aud reading of the scriptures
followed.
Dr. Brantly pronounced the fanerul
discourse and delivered a very fine des
quisitioa on death and immortality,
pointing out the comfort to be derived
from sorrow, and pointing to the pure
hope of Cnnstianity, which should lead

Dr. Bittlo concluded the Church ser

A Llitie Brick Work.
On Saturday afternoon, about half pas'
five o’clock, Ei. Day and Robert Allen,
better known in police and other circles as
“Soipe,” had an altercation at tbe corn
er cf Second and Malberry street?. Ei.
Day, it is claimed, nsed opprobrious lan<
gnage to the o*her, which complaint was
returned with interest.
Diy then batted Allen, and the parties
drew off about ten feet, when Day threw
& brick at Alien. It tcod effeot, produc
ing a paint aland ugly wound in his fore 1
ead, cover ng him with blood aad knock
ing him senseless for several moments.
Day lied.
Dr. Met'-aaer was called and dressed
the wound. It seems in a matter of wAr-
fare the razor has been discarded, and the
stately bn: les3 effective brick usurped its
place.
Knocked ofT the Track—A Young
CuUrcd Girl Probably Fatally In-
Jared.
As the down passenger train on the
Atlanta division of the Central Road vas
nearing Jonesboro yesterday, s
6mall colored girl about twelve yrar
of age w»3 observed by the engineer Mr.
William Mitchell abont forty feet from
the track. She endeavored to cross the
track in front of tbe train. When in
forty feet of her, Mr. Mitchell blew
his brakes, sounded the alarm whistle to
frighten the girl from her attempt
She, however, continued to roc for the
track, and in endeavoring to crosc, leaped
upon the pilot while the train was run
ning at abont thirty-five miles an hour.
She was knocked many feet In the air,
and to the eide of tne traok. The train
was stepped, and the extent of her injn
aies ascertained. When the cars left, it
was supposed she was in a dying cend.a
tion..
Mr. Mitchell is one of the most reliable
engineers on the road and no blame can
be attachei to him. But for the ra.-h
act of the girl the accident would not
have occurred.

much to the convenience of transient
guests. The present reading room will
be used for this purpose. All the mat

Special attention is called to the adver

Ketpmx the Record.
Not long since, ia riding out in a little
suburban village not a thousand miles
from where we write, we chanced to
overtake a genial friend (Col. H.) of ours
who seemed to have quite a numerous
little progeny stowed a a ay in all the
available space of hi? buggy, when he
suddenly drew up his horse and turning
round looked anxiously to the rear as
though he had forgotten something. We
cried out, “hallo Colonel, what is the
matter?” and he replied, “Well, upon
my soul! I believe I have lost one of the
children;” and with this he hurriedly
drew from hia pocket a little memoran
dum book and “called the roll.” “A l
present or accounted for,” ha sa^d, as hia
face resumed ita wonted smile, and
clucking to his old horse jogged along.
We congratulate the Colonel. He is one
of the boat men in the world. Nothing
seems to worry him, and even theee little
“crosses” seem only to have made a
“Christian of him.” Wio Wag.
