Tho case mentioned yeoterday of tho

besides those mentioned yesterday. The
accused received, before tho warrant wss
taken out for him, a severe scalp wound
with a bar of iron from those who enbsi
quenlly had him arrested. Yesterday
they appeared before Magistrate Free

was accordingly diemisi-cd and the im<

Campbell anti Jones
It is with pleasure we draw attention to
the advertisement of Messrs, Campbell
Jt Jones, which appears this morning in
another column. The firm Is ooinposed
of two ot the beet and most thoroughly
posted cotton men to be found anywhere
and wo take pleasure in commending
them as entirely reliable warehouse men
tending as they do in the front ranks of
onr business men. They have cstab
lished for themselves a very enviablo rep
utation.
They will have constantly on hand at
their warehouse a full supply of bagging
and ties, which they will dispose of at
reasonable rates. The walls of their
warehouse have been entirely rebuilt and
the whole structure made new through
out, their office re-arranged, and they ar e
now prepared to do a larger bnsiness than
ever.

COUNTY COURT.
The Corn Thief Sentenced.
Yesterday, in the County C.nrt, the
oase of the State against Lewis Bryant
the darkey who was arrested on last
Thursday for stealing oorn from his em
ployer, Mr. J. F. Barfield, was tried. The
evidence fully snsUined the report al
ready made of the case, and the guilt of
the dartey was vary dearly and conclu
sively proven. Mr. Barfield prosecuted
the case. The clrcamstancee, as detail
ed from the witness stand, showed that
the dray load of oorn was driven Into the
alley connecting Fourth andFtfth streets,
near Plum, and there the theft was oorn
milted.
Judge Holt, after hearing the case
sentenced Bryan to pay a fine of one
hundred dollars or to serve on the chain
gang of the county eleven months. It is
probable ho will be forced to choose the
latter alternative and contribute his ser
vices to the connty for the above men
tioned length of time. The amount of
stealage from Mr. Barfield by the dray,
man cannot bs estimated as he bas been
in bis employ some time.
Another case, rather singular than
otherwise, was disposed of. It came up
from the Kntland distriot and was against
a oolorod man by the dame of Ben Pat-
tereon, the warrant charging him with
“turning a woman ont of doors." *
It seems some time since he compelled
hiB wife to leave his houBe. A warrant
was taken out against him for the offense
as slated above. As no offense of that
description is laid down by the code
Jndgo Holt dUmisaed tho prooeediuas

An Escaped Convict Captured.
Yesterday evening there arrived in the
city Mr. J. B. Duckworth, one of the
guards of the convict camp of Colonel C.
B. Howard, of Everett station, in charge
of Jim Walker, a colored convict who es
capod two weeks since. Ho was captur
ed abont two and a half miles of Zebu
Ion, in Pike county, on Thursday about
2 o’clock, in the afternoon.
Walker escaped with two others about
two weeks since from the field in whioh
they were working. The dogs were im-
medistcly pnt on their track and over
took them. They however, oaptured the
bloodhounds by feeding to them a portion
of their own food whioh had been left
over at their last meal, and reserved for
this purpose. Mr. Dookworth has been
on the traok of Walker ever sinoe, and
only suoceeded in overtaking him at the
time mentioned.
He was known by tho name of Bill
Adell. When he saw that he was abont
to be oaptnred he drew a knifo and then
ran, forcing the guard to shoot him twioe,
both shots taking effeot in his hips near
the small of bis baok. Up to laBt evening
neither of the balls had been extracted,
the wounds not giving much pain, and
the darkey requesting tbst no attentio n
bo paid them until he reaohed the
camps.
The prisoner was lodged in the connty
jail, was well oared for last night and
will be oarried on to-day. He is a convict
from Crawford connty sent up for seven
years, and bad served but two monthB of
his time. Lost ovening he seemed very
weak andfhad to be supported on each
sido as be walked from tho car shed to
tho jail.
Serjuniir true in ssrunawick.
On Friday night there was, wo learn,
a good deal of excitement in Brunswick,
over an attempted assassination of one
of its worthy and wealthy citizen, Mr.
J. Micbealson.
Some weeks since, Mr. Michealson was
burned out by the extensivo' conflagra
tion, which occurred in that city, and
which was noted in this paper. The
firm of Michealson Sc Brother was the
heaviest loser. Since the| fire they have
been on a lively lookout far goods stolen
at the fire. The whereabouts of some of
the goods were discovered, and a raid
was made on the houses of several white
men of the place, and part of the pilfer
ed stock recovered..
This has created a considerable amount
of feeling in certain quarters.
On Friday evening as Mr. Michaeleon
was leaving his residence, which is in the
center of the city, he was attacked by an
unknown party and dangerously wounded
with a knife, being stabbed in a number
of places. It thought be would not
live through the night. Tne excitement
in |Branswick was very great. Three
parties were arrested soon after the cut
ting, on suspicion, bnt it is thought the
guilty party escaped.
Haw to Disinfect.
The following is a simple method of
disinfecting within the reach of all:
Take an old oyster can or other tin box
of convenient size, make two holes in
the upper edge opposite each other, and
through them fasten a piece of wire to
form a handle. Let the wire extend
abont a foot and a half above the can.
Put a email quantity of snlphnr into
tho can and on the sulphur pour a little
alcohoL Set the aloohol on fire and let
the cup down into tne well or other place
needing disinfection by means of a string
attached to a wire and let it remain
there till the sulphur burns out. This
process should bs repeated two or three
times a week. The sulphuric acid gas
generated will effeetcady destroy every
germ of malaria with which it comes in
contact. No one should breathe any of
the fumes or gas from the snlphur, and
they should be confined as mnch as pos
sible to the place being disinfected.
Brevities.
Several pleasant showers fell jester
day afternoon, which had the effect of
lowering the temperature a few degrees.
The number of arrests in the city for
the post few days has been small.
There ia seme danger of a scarcity Of
brick ia the city to carry on the exten
sive improvements now in progress,
The present month has not been very
favorable to the manufacture ot brick,
on account of the rain.
A beautifui basket of rare flowers was

THE NAVAL CADETSHIP-
The Appointment ■till Undecided.
The Board of Examiners were engaged
yesterday in examining the papers of
the applicants for the naval cadetship,
submitted at the competitive examina
tion held on Thursday last. Their deci
sion np to last night was not made, as
their labors had not ended.
The class which has just passed the
examination ordeal is one of the bright
est that has ever contested for tho posi
tion. It is pronounced by Professor W,
M. 'Williams, who has been engaged as
a member of the Board cf Examiners in
a number of these contests, pronounce-
the present class the best that ever ap
peared before him.
The labor required of the members of
the Board are very gre-t, involving the
grading of the questions prepared by
themselves first, and then grading, one
by one, (he answers submitted by the
candidates. There has been nearly
ream of legal cap written by the appli
cants. It is thought, from the revels-
tiono of the papers so far examined, tha*
the contest will be close between many
of the young men. The committee will
not know the name of the auccvesfal
competitor until a decision has been
reached, and the sealed envelope* oon
taimng the names of the contestants are
opened. ‘
The interest in the city is quite gener
al, as many of the boys applying
have many friends who are anxious for
their buccosb. We regret. that each one
could not receive an appointment and
that nino are doomed to disappointment.
The decision of tho board will be reached
on to-morrow afternoon or evening.
