A VOMIUAB PACE GONE roREVER. _
Mr. Har.iie’s (aoe is almost os familiar
lo the habitats of the County Coart
House as are the walla of the building it
self. He was a Southerner by birth, and
lived in Georgia at the commencement
of the late war. Entering the Confeder
ate setvioe, he was commissioned as colo
nel of a regiment, and wse ootnmended
for discretion and bravery displayed in
many severe battlet. He was a lawyer
by profession, and came here to engage
in praolioe when peaoe was restored.
Eight years ago he was appointed to a
sabarciaaie position in the Connty
Clerk’s office, and a year thereafter was
promoted t. the responsible position cf
Law Clerk to tbe Supreme Court. Be
ing thoroughly Informed as to the his du
ties, always considerate and oonrteous
in his business transactions, he gained
tbe entire confidence and warm esteem of
every member of the bar that came in
contact with him.
Mr. Uardie’a health had been defin
ing for aeverol years. He had had seve
ral hemorrhages of the longs, and be-
cime reduced to a mere skeleton. To
this emaoiated condition his aociden’.al
death is attributed, his friends belioviug
that he had not strength sufficient lo bat
tle with tbe surf wher6 he was bathing.
Although quite ill for for a long time, he
has attended to his official duties, his only
respite being an oooasioaal visit for salt
uir at Long Branch, in oompauy with hie
wife. He leaves no ebildren. Mr. Har-

ON A STRIKE.
Wanting Higher Waist.
Yesterday some comment was started
by a sinks of some of the workmen en
gaged on tbe new building on Cherry
street, being erected for Mr. G. B. Elb
ert*. 8ome of the workmen, the mortar
carriers, have been receiving sixty cents
a da; for their servioes. This amount
they deemed too small, and they have for
several days been dissatisfied with their
remuneration. They, hewever, demanded
of Mr. Hendricks, the contractor, on ad
vance of twenty-five per oent., making
their daily pay seventy-five cents. This
was refased. Yesterday their disoontent
culminated, and the eight employed on
tbe building concluded to strike for an
advance aud laid down their hods, re
fusing to do anything until the advanoe
demanded was made. Mr. Hendricks
immediately discharged five of the men
and employed five others in their pieces,
advancing their wages to seventy-five
oente a day. Tnree of the recalcitrants
were received back at the advanced
wages, and the cheery soand of tbo voices
of tbe workmen suffered no cessation.
The work is being pu-hed forward rapidly,
and the bniidiug is expected to be ready
for oooupation on the first of October.
