times recently gentlemen who have
left their teams standing there, on their

day or two since a gentleman was delayed
some time on this account, and a short
time before a new pair of reins was ont

i Hr, STATE FAIR.
Mectlag of the Citizens' Committee
Yeiterday, atthft offls* of the Secreta
ry of the Fair Aaio^iation, the Citizens'
Committee held an important meeting,
to oonaider the interests of the approach
ing State Fair. It was annonnoed by
the Sc .retary that the music for the oc
casion would be furnished by the cele
brated Tnir'ccath Infantry band, now
stationed in Atlanta. Toe ban 1 is com
posed of twanty-two magicians, and the
music they Tarnish is Mimply sapero.
All the arrangements have been com
pleted, and tnis elegant bind will cer
tainly be an attraction of the Fair,
will be accompanied by ita own dram M
jor, who is the beat in hia basineaa in th
South.
Unl«r the head ot the special prami
ami it was reported that qnite a number
of tbi* merchants and others were in favor
of this idea, and as soon aa they perfect
ed their arrangements, would offer them,
Mr. Laden Smith, of L. W. Smith
Co., oSerod a fi :e picture worth ten dol
lars, for the best drawing by an anatenr
artist.
A special prize of a five dollar gold
piece ia offered for the best boy declaimer.
The secretary announced the gratifylnj
fact that the Interest being taken
throughout the State was very largely
increased, and tho prospects were very
excellent.
The idea of having an excursion on
aomeono of tho ro»di rnaninjf into Ma
con on each day of tho Fair iraa diacutsod,
and was favored by the meeting. It is
thought this plan will largely increase
the aggregate attendance by popularizing
the rates of travel for those days.
It was H-'jgeeted that special efforts be
mads to it exhibits from fairs taking
plaoe bet oro the State Fair. After a gener
al conversation on the grounds, the attrao
tiona and the favorable outlook. Captain
T. L. Uassenbnrg sugge.ted that each
county in tbo State be invited and re,
quested to send to the fair, if po.nible,
a bale of ootton, all to bs oolleoted in oue
hall ond exhibited as the contribution of
toe agriculturalists of Georgia to the
Hood orphans After the fair the cotton
is to be sold, and the prooeeds properly
invested.
Tbo idea was very favorably received,
Colonel George W. Adams spoke in favor
of it. Judge Holt suggested that the
press in tho various counties be ro
quested to respond, and urge tbo matter
in their own coontiea. Colonel Jones
poke a few words in favor of tho plan
It was suggested that each family con.
tribute a basket of seed cotton, send it
to »omo central gin, and when enough
has been received pack and chip to the
Secretary of the Fair.
From those communities unable
make a contribution ‘of a bale of cotton
or tboeo that may wish to supplement
their contributions, other products of the
soil will bo received and disposed of.
Correspondence with the Secretary ,ia invi
ted from every part of the State. The plan
is a lino one, and in no way conld Geor
gia better show her appreciation of the
dead General and discharge a debt of
gratitnde she owes to him. The com,
mittee adjourned anbject to call.
The Battalion to rinvannoh.
We team that there is a movement on
foot to endeavor to get the Second Geor
gia Battalion, or as many of the oompan-
es of tbo corps as can do so, to go to the
Jasper Centennial in Savannah. The in
tention Is that tho companies go in a
battalion under oommand of Us offioera.
This is a good idea, and those moving in
the matter think that there will not be
soy difficulties in the way under the
present liberal inducement of the rail-
rood, and tbo schedule arranged for the
occasion. It will bs neosisary for at least
three companies to go. Two, the Votnn
eersandtbu Floyd Bifl.-s, have deter
mined to go. It is believed that from the
remaining companies oomposing the
corps at least one other and perhaps all
ill be able to take the trip. We hope
the matter will bo oonsiJered. The Ma
con companies hope they wiit be joined
by the Baldwin Bines and tbs Fatnam
Kifles. Tho city of Savannah will be
full of companies on .that occasion, and
one ot tho largest gatherings of volun
teer soldiery will tame place that has ever
been known in that city. The Chatham
Artillery, besides antertaining the £jme
Light Guards, Cherokee Artillery of
Kerne, and the Washington Artillery of
Cnsrleston, wilt look after the Maoon
Volunteers. Too Montgomery BiC s, of
Charleston, will also be the guest of one
of tho Savannah companies. Augusta
sad other cities will also contribute to
the ranks of the military pageant.
