FORGERY.
A Tens* Han Obtains a »nr» and

Yesterday an interesting case came np
before Magistrate Freeman and attract
ed considerable interest as it Involved a
young man of good standing in Joses
connty. by the name of Middleton, in a
very questionable transaction, and fer
which be will probably have to answt 1
beforo the courts of the oonnty.
Yesterday the young man waa arrested
by Deputy 8heriff G. 8. Weacott, on a
warrant taken oat by Messrs. B. H. May
A Co. The warrant charged cheating
and swindling on the pert of the defen
dant. He was taken before Magistrate
Freeman, and the evidence- developed a
strong esse of forgery.
Some weeks since a young man from
Joses oonnty came to the city, visited B.
H. May A Co-’s establishment, and pro
posed to bay a buggy and harness on
time. He gave his name as Johnson.
The firm informed him he would have to
famish eecurlty as he was a stranger
He consented, and proposed as his en'
donee Mr. Bidford Turner. This wss
accepted, and a note prepared and given
him for the signature. Abont three
weeks later be returned, and stated that
that be bad lost the original
note, and another was furnished him. A
week ago be returned with the second
note signed, and took away the buggy
and harness.
The firm had eoms of the writing of
Mr. Turner In the afore and compared
tbo signature. A difference waa peroep.
tibls and Johnson’s attention called to
the fact. He explained that Mr. Tumor
was siok and his overseer signed for him
in his presence and with his oonsent.
Being still unsatisfied, the firm sent ove r
to Mr. Tamer in Jones connty and were
Informed that he had no knowledge of
the note whatever.
Mr. Iverson Harris, one of the sales
men of the establishment, was sent to
Jones connty and found the baggy bid
away in the woods, in tho possession of
Mr. Middlebruoks,instead of Johnson.the
namo which he bore when the buggy waa
obtained. He subsequently owned np to
the entire transaction and said in re
sponse to p question that he “does not
know why he did it, except that he
wanted a baggy and thongbt his fath
er's crop would oome in and he would
take up the note before it waa due.'
The affair is an unfortunate one for the
young man, and we hope circumstances
will relieve the hard lines of the aspect
of affairs as they now exist.
Tho case was continued until 11 o’clock
Monday morning.*’
