Death ofhra. T. B. Greanaia.
Tne announcement of tho death of
Mrs. Thomas B. Gresham, t, 3 morning,
will bring nnfeigned sorrow o tbe hearts
of alt who knew her. She died calmly
and poaoofnUy at her late residence
on Georgia avenue yesterday, at half,
past three o’clock io the afternoon. Her
death is one of tbe saddest we have ever
had to chronicle. Yonng, gifted in the
graoaa of the head and heart, possessing
a rare symmetry of character, she was
beloved by all who esteem and appreci
ate true womanhood.
Although Mrs. Gresham’s death was
not unexpected, it is nevertheless a shock
to all of her friends. She has been an
invalid for a number of months, and re
cently has been sinking very rapidly, un
til the end camo yesterday at the bonr
named. At an entertainment given for
the benefit of the Pablio Library, about
two years since, she contracted a severe
cold which developed into that fatal
malady, consumption. In vain were
the groves of Florida sought for restoring
health, and all that loring hearts could
suggest or willing hands execute, were
done without avail. During her last ill
ness, before her friends hi I given np
hope, she exhibited a calm resignation
and contemplated the enl of all with for
titude.
Mrs. Gresham is the.only child of Hoo.
and Mrs. Joel A. Billups, of Madison,
who have watched constantly by her side
for some time pist. She was just thir
ty-one years ot age, yesterday being the
thirty-firat anniversary of her birth.
She leaves a husband and two little boys
to mourn their irrapefuhle loss. Our
deepest sympathies ar > tendered the
family of the deceased. Tho funeral
aervioes will take place this afternoon a:
4 o'clock, from the Presoyter:an Church.

THE WAHHIOH DISTRICT SUSP
CIDK.
The parties censmltUnK the Deed
Beood Over.
The killing of the colored man in the
Warrior District, reported in the last
i,sue of ibe TxtMBiPH, caused a good
deal of inquiry. The facts, S3 near as
could be gathered, are as follows: -
On Friday evening the three darkeys,
who had been into Macon, were returning
to their homes in Crawford oounty.
They were nearing the atoro of Mo
il array & Hicks at a plaoo b
known as Yarborough’s Bridge, in threo
hundred yards of the oounty line. A dis
pute arose between tbe deceased, Dave
Watson and Joseph McNeiae. Words
wore followed by blows, and a dose en
counter soon succeeded. At length
Watson got hi* antagonist down,
who is an old man of about fifty-five
years of age, when hia eon, Moses Mc
Neiae, came to the reacne. He had In
his hand a single barreled shot gun, and
ordered Watson to desist from bearing
bis father. Watson then turned on tho
boy with some threat, when Moses dis
charged the gun, the load entering in
tbe left side of the unfortunate darkey,
in the region of the heart, killing him
inatantl .
The MeNeisea fled across to their home
in Orawford oonnty, where they were
iftVpn lute that night by tho Deputy
Sheriff of* the county, and a poese of
young men, who had all been serenading
together, and happened to hear of the
crime having been committed.
This Is one side of the killing. We un
derstand that a material witness to tho
fatal transaction gives another version
quite different and more damaging to tho
defendants. Thu killing was committed
in the public road on Friday about sun
set. Tho ooroner wss not notified until
Saturday about dark. Tbe place was fif
teen mites from tbe oity, and, beiag un
well, ho delegated his authority to the
Justice of the district, Mr. Parker.
An inquest was held on Sunday
morning before day and both of tho de-
fendanta bound over to answe
crime of murder. Tbe body, daring tbe
time wbich elapsed between the finding
and tho inquest lay in tho road welter
ing in its blood.
The gun was loaded with small shot
and cn account of the nearness of the two
parlies tore a tromendous bole in the
dead man’s side from which tbe blood
flowed, runing in quite a stream some six
feet from the body.
Yesterday both tho men were brought
into the city and lodged in jail. They
have engaged the services of Mr. John
L. Hardeman and Mr. B. D. Smith, of
Knoxville, to defend them before the Su
perior Court-

present her most attractive appearance.
The city will be decked with flaga, buai-

joy a grand holiday. The military pa
geant will be the largest that has been
seen in procession since the evacuation of
Saeman after his memorable march to
the sea. At night the city, will be
illuminated and numerous entertain
ments be given for the benefit of the
visitors to .the Centennial. General
Gordon has been fitly chosen as tbe
Centennial orator and will be in
troduced in becoming aiyle by
one of Savannah’s moat gifted
sons, Colonel. P. W. Meldrim. Large
delegations will accompany the Charles

military, and Florida will contribute a
large quota of visitors to the' occasion.
Brunswick, Darien, Femandina, Jack

to attraot a crowd. They will also

Yesterday, a colored man by the name
John Miller was arrested m the Bntland
Distriot, on a warrant taken out by Mr.
Birdsong aud brought to the city. It
seems some weeks since, the darkey wss
in a store near the home of Mr. Birdsong
looking at a pistol; while examining it,
it went off wounding a little son of Mr.
Birdsong. An account of the accident was
published in this paper at the time., Mr.
Birdsong has not been thorougly satisfied
as to the occurrence being purely acci
dental, and so a day or two since took
ont a warrant for Ibe darkey. Yesterday,
in endeavoring to arrest him, be resisted
constable Crane, of the Bntland District,
and before he was taken, he was struck
on the head with a gnn, receiving a scalp
wound some two inches long, and six
small stabs in the left arm from a pocket
knife, none of which are serious.
Io the struggle be struck the arresting
officer a number of blows, and subse
quently a warrant was taken out against
him for assault and battery, and on this
warrant he was carried before Magistrate
Grannies, yesterday afternoon, and com
