TDESUAT. OCIOBEK 7. 1879.
Runaway.
Y*i«teril»y morning about 11 o'clock a
pair of malr^i made a da<-n on Third
street near the alley by W. F. Cannon &
Co.’a a tore. No damage wa« done, bnt
aotn • little excitement waa the result of
the incident.
The Fluid Klfl«a-
That* will be no doubt about the Floyd
Rill -a going to ttarannah with the other
oompanic*. Captain Hardeman will go
down in oommand, and the files of tho
company will ba * ell filled. Last cran
io* a drill waa lb Id at the armory, and
all the arrangements of tho trip perfect
ed. The company will make a Tory fine
appearance in Sar&nnab, in fact Macon
will have no roaaon, we think, to be
aahamed of her military representativee.
A full uniform drill will be held thin
cvenlog.
The Mltcbel Light Guards.
The armory of the Mitobel Unardd
presented a lively ac ne laet evening.
The company had a fall and enthoaiaa
tio meeting, and all the preparations for
the trip to Savannah and tho approaching
Centennial were completed. The com
pany will carry neatly thirty men, and
will present a gallant appearance. They
will probably join tbe other oompaniea
from Macon and form a battalion. The
members of the company have become
enthni: ratio over tho trip, and they aro
now not to be kept away.
The Volunteers.
This gallant company, at its armory,
bad n fnil meeting and a good drill last
evening, and it waa found that the com
pany waa more in favor than ever of tho
trip to tbe Jasper Centennial in Savan
nah. The company will probably carry
Ihlrty-two or throe men. Tbe company
will this evening have a meeting at
eight of clock at the armory, and every
Volonteer who intends making tbe trip,
whether honorary or active, la requested
to be at tho armory at the hoar appointed
with cartridge boxes and bayonet sheath*.
Election of a Teacher.
Yesterday afternoon at the meeting of
tho Board of Education an additional
teacher was elected on aocoant of the
erection of the Academy lot school house.
Mias Lou Thomas waa transferred from
the fourth year class in tbe Booth Ma
con Grammar SohooL This left a va
cancy in that school, and Miss Mattie
Llpford, who hold the position of super
numerary, waa elected to fill it. Mice
Jessie Lane waa elected bapernmnerary
to the grade in Mies Lipiord’a place.
The school house will bo ready for oc
cupation on Monday next.
The Pedestrian.
Yeatorday Theodore Tobias, tho pe
destrian, walked at the Park from seven
o’clock in the morning onlll seven o’clock,
at night. He has a long, swinging gait,
an J makes his miles in a very short time.
The walk took piaoe on the mile track
two laps being mode to the mile. The
distance waa walked from the grand stand
to tho half mile polo and then to the
htartiog plane. He made frequent spurts
and made a number of miles in very short
lime. The beet time was nine minutes
and thirty seoonda. The score ehowod
that ho had walked sixty miles. The
attendance waa not very Urge-
Brevities.
- Look at the trado mark of the Mile
End Cotton in the advertisement wbioh is
in another oolnmu of this paper. It ap
pears on tho label of every spool of tho
thread. Sold by J. C. Bannon & Co.
Tbe' City Treasurer, Ur. Charles J
Williamson, has a lad nail in the paper
this morning, which he wishes every tax
payer who is in arrears to read.
Ford’s Juvenile Pinafore Opera Com.
pany will soon appear in Macon. Many
of the children are from Episcopal Churoh
choirs, and have fine voices. They play
soveral other operas besides Pinsforo (
among which Fatinitsa, a spectacular
opera, is noticeable.
Msoon will be foil of military on the
day of the nnveiling of tbe Confederate
monument. The oommitteo in charge of
the ceremonies of the anveiling of tbe
monument will deoide on the third day of
the fair aa the most suitable for the cere
mony.
'(haJasper Centennial.
Tho interest in the Jssper Centennial
seems to be beooming general in the com
tnanily. Yesterday a crowd of Maconitcs
congregated at the depot and left for
Savannah. The evening trains oame in
crowded over neeriy all the roads
*nd thrir occupants also departed
for Savannah, showing that other
places will bn well represented.
The Macon and Brunswick rood last,
evening had a large quota of passengers,
and will this evening take a very large
party down. Tbe Macon Volunteers,
the Floyd Btflx and tbs Muobel Light
Guard* will take this route to-morrow
evening. These commands will be joined
by,the Baldwin Blues, and with about 40
men and a large delegation of tbe oiti‘
sens of MitlodgevUlo who will also take
the Brunswick train.
Bleeping cars withoat change will be ou
the train. At Jesapthe Urenvwiok Brass
Band will join the excursion.
On tbe Central a very large party will
go down. Its trains Issf evening were
tilled with p w-cigere, end the indications
are they trill be evert fnVer Ibia evening
and to-morrow.
The Park.
‘ihe Park is now looking lovely. Tbe
first fronts of fall hero not blighted the
summer tolitge, and the grass is still
beautifully green. It will present a very
attraciivo appearance at the Fair. Tbe
work of preparing the place for the re-
oeplicn of the immense crowd which will
come to Maoon during the great Fair
steadily progresses.
The grass has b*vn cut nnl the walks
mode clear of all grass.whicn have gto'
during the summer. Tho balconies to
all of Uie buildings are !o be thoroughly
overhauled, and made absolutely safe to
sustain all toe weight wuich can be
plaoad upon them. T:,e area within tbe
mile track is to be cleared of the corn
stalks now within it, which obstruct tho
view on the upper trick.
The county chain gang is now at work
on tho mils track. Tue grass which has
grown on the roadway of the track dur
ing th summer is being rapidly remov
ed, preparatory to a thorough course of
harrowing, scraping and rolling. The
track u pronounced the best in the South
by many fins judge- of such matters.
The preparations far the State Fair at
the Park are progressing very, sat-
sfaotorily.
>'u - FIRE Ik S*«Mk.
isTtral Etwrea Earmed.
The news of a serious conflagration in
tbe town of Gordon reaobed the city yes
terday- It broke out on tbe left hand
side of tbe railroad in going to Savannah,
below tbe hotel, in the millinery store of
Mrs. M. E. Flemister, at half-past three
o’clock in tbe morning, burning the en
tire block.
From special telegrams received last
evening we learn that tbe stores of Mrs.
Flemister, Mrs. Passmore, drags, Messis
Anderson, T. S. Barclay, groceries and
saloon, and King Sanders, general store,
were totally destroyed- Tbe store house
occupied by Mr. Sanders waa a two story
building, on which there waa an insu
rance of one thousand dollars. He also
had his stock insured to the same
amount, whioh waa all of tbe iiuuranoe
injthe burned district. M esses. Sanders and
Bsrolsy succeeded in saving a portion of
their stocks. No goods from the other
establishments were saved. Tbe build-
in gs were of wood and burned rapidly.
The buildings occupied by Mrs. Pass-
more and Mr. Anderson were owned b;
Mr. W. J. Bridger and Willism Califf.
One of them was a two-story structure
and was used a i the Masonic Hall.
Tbe hotel and passenger depot narrow
ly escaped being burned. The cotton in
the yard of the railroad took fire, bnt was
extinguished. Under slightly more un-
favorable oircumstshbes, the town wonld
have suffered very severely. Aa it wss,
with meager facilities for battling with
the flames, the loss will be a severe one.
The losses are estimated at ten thou
sand dollars, two thousand of whioh aro
ooveredby insurance.
The fire was nnmistakably the work of
an incendiary, as no fire had been in tho
building in which it broke OBt in many
months, and no matches wore left about
the premisos.
Tho population worked heroically. Tho
colored people deserve much praise for
thsir assistance in saving goods from tho
burning buildings, and in preventing tin
nprood of the fire.
State Fair Items.
Bibb oonnty will, throngb its agricul
tural societies and clubs, compete for the
$300 premium offered to any county for
the largest and finest display in merit
and variety of prodnets, and results of
home industries at the State Fair.
We are informed that a large and en
thusiastic mooting of ladies and gentle
men was hold on Saturday last, at the
Club house of the Ocmulgee Club, in tho
Howard district, and all the arrange
meats completed for making the Bibb
county display at tho approaching fair
grand enccoBS.
Several bandied articles were donated
and subscribed for the exhibition, by tbo
members present, and committee’s ap'
pointed in each diatriot of the county
canvass for additional exhibits.
By resolution the Bibb Connty Agri
cultural Society waa specially invited to
assist and the agricultural brotherhood of
thu oonnty invoked to aid and zealously
co-operate with the club in making ag>
rioultnre the leading and attractive fea
ture of Ihe exhibition.
Manufacturers and mechanics were al
es appealed to to fnrniah samples of their
produotiona whioh will afford them an
opportunity of demonstrating to the ag-
rionltnrist of the ooontry that Bibb
county can folly supply them in these
departments of a special home Industry.
The invitation was also extended to tho
ladies of tbe oonnty to furnish articles cf
their skill snd ingenuity, and to aid and
encourage, by their approval and influ
ence, this enterprise of tho Oemnlgee
Agricultural Club. It is tbe intention of
the Club to have every article represen
ted named in the premium list, and wo
indulge the hope that the citi
zens of the city and conntry
will be as liberal as in previous years in
6astsining the oredit of the oonnty. Tbe
great object the members of the club
bave in view in competing for the liberal
premiums is that they might improve
their house of meeting and for erecting
suitable buildings and enclosures for
holding frequent meetings and ooca'
sional fairs, as they feel that a recurrence
of these sooial and industrial fairs will
have a strong tendenoy to elevate the
standard of agrioultnre and otherwise
benefit farming interests.
Tbo following general committee, com
posed of Messrs. A. M. Lookett, J. W.
Myrick, Robert E. Bowman, W.
D. Johnson, B. E. Park and H. J. Pe
ter, was appointed to hare control and
superintend the getting up of the connty
display. The district committees have
been requested to report progress at tbe
next meeting of the clnb, which will be
held at the Court House on Saturday
xt at ten o’dook, at which meeting all
citizens interested are cordially invited
to attend.
crammed to its utmost capacity by an au
dience which came in damp but went
away aglow. Tbe balconies also h»d
their due proportion and even standing
room was hard to find. The program
me was a brilliant one, and its perform-
anoe far exceeded even what the fame of
tho manager wonld lead one to expect.
The end-men, ten in all, were almost
numerous enough to form an entire min
strel troupe cf the ordinary old fashioned
pattern, and the specialties were original,
captivating, marvelous, and surpassingly
ludicrous. Each feature of the program
me merits especial mention, bnt the
praise wonld be so uniform as to become
tiresome. Of such an entertainment, the
critic must oontent himself with sayiog
that there waa nothing to condemn and
everything to approve.”
The Monument.
Yesterday a portion of tbe shaft of the
monument which had not been removed
from the railroad, was banled np to the
piaoe of itslooation at the intersection of
Second and Mulberry street. Tbe lar
gest block weighed some seventeen thou
sand pounds.
The. block was gotten on a heavy truck
for transportation. Eighteen mulee
Mansfield’s dray line were attached, and
CopvErnpb.
The question of tbe reproduction cf
copies of written ctroulars, postal cards of
prices current, bills of faro, invitations
to parties and many other things has
been one of much interest. Tbe Istebt
invention for aooomplishing this re
sult is an invention known aa Gans &
Co.’a copygraph. It oonsists of a pad
contained in a melalio box, on whioh the
impression from tho first sheet is placed
From it fitty impressions can be repro
duoed by a singularly simple process.
Tbo writing is done with an ordinary
steel pen. No blotter is used, and after
a sufficient number of impressions have
been taken from the original, the plate
or pad can be prepared for another im
preeion by erasing the writing with a
moistened sponge. The copygraph can,
of coarse, be need in oopying ordinary
business letters. It is mode in three
sixes, and is acoompanied by specially
prepared ink and the neoessary sponge.
We have examined the invention, and arm
convinced that it is a good tiling, and
will prove eminently useful for the pur
poses above mentioned. Mr. B. Blouen-
stein is agent for it in Maoon. After
canvassing the city, he will go to Atlanta
iu the interests of the invention.
•verli'a fiesslit C*l*re4 Minstrels
To-morrow evening at Balaton Hall this
troupe of genuine oolored minstrels will
appear. Tbs troupe is well supplied with
en 1-men, ban joists, daooe.men.eto. The
Company has received Haltering notioes
its tour, and a performance better than
any given in Maoon in a long while by a
genuine troupe of darkies may be ex-
peoted. The Boston Daily Globa speaks
the perform anoe in that city as follow*:
‘'Seldom does s traveling combination
open an engagement under more cheering
anapioee than did 1 , the colored minstrel
troupe, organised by the indefatigable
Harsrly, at the Boston Theatre, last
evening. The elements could not bave
entered into a much more formidable
conspiracy to induce people to stay a
home, yet the spacious parquet va (
the immense marble block was started on
its way to the site of the monument. At
the oorner of Third and Cherry streets
the males were put into a trot. The
wheels of the truck, however, sank into
the soft earth of a place where a eewer had
recently been laid. When they struck the
hard earth of tbe ditch on the other side
so great was thersbock that the team was
halted, and the stone jolted forward,
breaking the tongne of the transporting
vehicle, a ten inch sill. Tho bro
ken timber was replaced by another, and
the marble hanled to its place of destina
tion withont further accident. Tho whole
of the monument has now arrived and
has been delivered, except threo blocks of
granite, which is still ot tho depot. Mr.
William Coonan, who is superintending
the work, feels nesnred that he has ample
time for Us erection before the Statu
Fair.
