It took several policemen last night

the melee, the pants of offloera Murphy
and Cronin ware nearly torn off them -by
this infuriated fin of Baccbns.
Large crowd.
A large crowd left on both tbe Central
end Brunswick road for Savannah

of; hot then Savannah knows how to en
tertain her guests, The Jasper Contes

far as a crowd can make it.
The corner atone ef the Monument.
Wo learn that there is still a smell
amount of room in the box of the oorner
elone of tbe monument, and any contri
butions submitted to tbe committee of
arrangements, which may bo deemed
worthy by them, will be placed in tbo
bix. The box ts now about two thirds
full, and will be dosed in a few days.
Mercer University achslarshipa
The Mayor and Coaoeil have given no
tice that there are vacancies of five free
scholarships in Mercer University to bo
filled by tbe boerd. These scholarships
ere mode vacant by graduation and otber
causes. The city is by lbs agreement made
with tbe University entitled to twdva per
petual free eeholanbipe in the University.
It Is likely tho competition for there
place i will be quite spirited, as there ore
quite a number of boys prepared to en
ter oollege wbo will roadtly avail them
salves of tho opportunity to apply for
these plaoes. Applicationi can .now be
filed in the Clerk of tho Counoll’e office.
The boon of a oollege education is not
to be slighted, and this fact will be ap
preciated bymaiiyof our aohool boys,
In a critical condition.
The little gtrl wbo wsa shot by her lit
tle brother, Jimmie Valentino, on Troup
Hill, was yesterday in a critical conci-
tiou. The oocurenee was purely nooldem-
sl, Tbe iittlo follow, who.ls a mere lad,
not knowing tho pistol woe loaded, was
playing with it in his hand when it was
fired, tbe ball entering his hand above
the tliomb and paauiqg out into his mao
tor’s arm, khaitsiiog the bone. > It seem
that the pistol wa. not his, but he and u
playmate at school had temporarily ex
changed weapons, he giving an Alabama
sling for the pistol, an old single barreled
affair. Parents osonot be too oareful iu
watohing their children sad preventing
their having firs arms, especially unleaded
guns and pistols.

A warrant was taken yesterday for a

TUe Monument.
Ail of the blocks of stone and morbid
of the monumcn'. have now .arrived and
the work of placing them in position is
now actively in progress. The work is in
tbe bands of Mr. William Coousn, of the
firm of Muldoon A Oo., of Louisville,
who has had great experience in the ereo-
tion of some of tbe moat imposing mon
uments of the Slate. Ho is thoroughly
compiled to do the work, and it will bo
skillfully done.
Tbo work of raising the base is in the
hands of Mr. A. C. Bobbins, and when
completed tho work will be turned over
to Mr. Coonan. Yesterday the holes,
in which are to be placed posts for the
support of tbe derrick, were being dug.
They wilt be sunk at least six feet in the
earth, and will be distant one hundred
feet from the base of the monument.
The derrick itself will be forty-three feet
in height, and will be of the most sub
stantial character. We learn from the
contractor of tho job that the blocks
composing tbe monument are as massive,
if not more so, than >ny he has erected
in the South.
The inscription s.lotted and published
with a few changes, has been pencilled
oo the stone, and is now being cut. Tbe
unveiling of the completed structure cu
ring the fair will attract an immense
crowd to the city. The ceremonies will
be very imposing. One of the most
brilliant orators of the South will be se
lected, and the event will be eg:and one,
not only in to* history of Mscou, bat of
rite State, ’

Aaron Bowman, all oolored laborers in
the Howard Distrifct. They were tried
for stealing ootton froxt the plantation

taken from a ootton house on the place.

James alias Knox Tilly, who has just
served out a term on the obain gang, was
up for sn old offense of larceny from tho
house. He is quite a noted thief among
his color. His case was postponed until
next Saturday.
Bobert Stevens, the darkey, who so
liberally helped himself to the contents
of the Lanier House wine cellar, was
brought before tSe court and plead guil

his coat which was hung up in Rescin

of which had been freely consulted
There were ample evidences of his dep

Excitement m Albany.
A day or two since a Macon man was
in Albany, in a certain yarehonso quietly
engaged in social chat with the proprie
tors, when tho soene was suddenly trans
formed into one of intense excitement.
Tho ubiqoltons small boy of the estab
lishment was, when tho Mnconile enter
ed, caressing tho front door post and
gazing anxiously up tho street. He sud
denly came rushing in and breathlessly
announced that “Greer was eoming."
Instantly tho head of the honso stepped
into the Iron vault, and tho heavy door
went to with a thud, tho chief clerk
wound his length np in the empty but
friendly box, and another partner divo-1
boneath the counter and was ctfeotnally
hidden from viow, while tho remainder
of tho force fled precipitately out of tbe
back door. The Macon men began to
think “Greer” was some escaped mad
man or desperado, who was spoiling for a
fight and after reaching for the place
of tho pistol on the hip, and finding
nothing but a took hammer and a bunch
of keys, began to look for a place of safo.
ty, and entrenched himself behind a bale
of sheeting. Tho small boy went ont to
moet the enemy, and as he was a lineal
docondant of the original G. W., an
swered the interrogations promptly. -
Our informant soon fonnd that the
enemy was an innocent bailiff on a wild
hoot for jurors. The question was asked,
whero is the proprietor? He had jnst
gone to dinner.
Whore is Mr. ■? He was ont of
tho city, and that small boy, with tho
fortilo imagination, continued to locate
the members of tho firm in a manner
which did him great honor. At last
“Groer” sorrowfully took the pad.and ono
by ono the absentees returned and fell on
the nook of tbe small boy and wept. When
all had returned they joined hands and
corralled a Iittlo song to the small boj
who oan ent a cherry troo and lay it Kin
the fro9t, and who can meet a bailiff face
to face and qnail not beforo his gaze.

fooes of dramatio queens, have set th.ur

part—and os she flits with wayward grnco
amid tbe shadow dance, or repels with
noble scorn the traveling peasants, or
weeps npon tho breast of oldFadet at
sight of her dress of shreds and patches,
or melts the heart of stern old Barbeau-1
by her matohlesa pleading, or hides the
deathless love she feels for OAndry only
to mako it plain, or last of all cling*

Haverly’s Minstrels Last Night.
Perhaps in the whole realm of min
strelsy there is not a troupe more capable
of giving a highly satisfactory perform
ance than that of Haverly's Minalrela,
who appeared at Balaton Hall last even
ing before a pooked gallery and a fair
audience down stairs, in sn entertain
ment unequalcd for novel variety and
attractiveness. The applause accorded
them was demonstrative, genuine and
well deserved. A remarkable feature of
the performance waa a freedom in the
programme from anything bordering on
the vulgar or darkened with the slightest
shadow of nnreflnement. Tho jokes
were new and sparkling, the singing of a
nature approaching melodious perfect
ness, while the dancing was indeed ex
cellent. The audience wsa borne away
in laughter by the oomicalilies of tho
ten end men.
B. G. Little sang the base solo, “Tho
Banjo now Hangs Silent on the Door” in
a remarkably deep voice. “Yus he did.”
The dancing by Wm. Allen on a pedestal
only fifteen inches square and four feet
high was wonderful good.
As far as oar observation extends, wu
accord to Wallace King the finest tenor
voice possessed by any colored man in
the world, in fact, almoet without an
eqnal, either white or black. All the
other specialties were admirably per
formed.
The entertainment closed with tbe
great festival, “Uncle Ben’s Twins,”
after which the radieDoe dispersed with
the unanimous opinion that Haverly’s
Minstrels hod indeed wrought a revolu
tion in modern minstrelsy, and presen
ted the most excellent entertainment wit
nessed In Macon in many years.

Couk’i Brigade Keunlun.
The reunion of this brigade which
to take plaoe on the 29th inst. at the
State Fair, is attracting a great deal of
nlcrest, and It will be tho largost reunion
of lhe eoldiers of a Georgia command
that hr i ever taken place in Georgia.
While many who survived tho field have
laid down their arms in tho warfare of
life, many still remain to tell the story
of the bygone days and a goodly repre
sentation will be on hand. The veterans
will bo cordially received in Macon.
Efforts aro now being made to get np
grand banquet for the brigade-
It is thought $500 can readily
be raised, wliioh affords a very handsome
entertainment. It is probable all of .tbe
oompaniea in tbe city will tender the
usual courtesies of their armories to the
visiting ox-soldiers. Among those who
will oertamly bo present will be Captain
Peyton Fitts, of Jones county,
wbo went out from that county in
