It is now a certainty that there will be
a battalion of artillery here to partici
pate in the ceremony of unveiling the
Confederate monument. The Chatham
Artillery, Captain J. F. Wheaton, of Sa
vannah; Howell’s Battery, Captain I
Herman, of Sandcraville, and the Nassau
Light Artillery of Fernandins, Fla., will
form the battalion. These .companies
have formally aooepted.invitations of the
Second Georgia Battalion, and wil]
be in Macon on tho 29th instant.
The Maoon Cadets.
Last night the Maoon Cadets had
satisfactory drill an 1 meeting at which
time arrangements were made to enter
tain their friends on the 29th. This com
pany will look after the Putnam Bifles,of
Katonton and the Nassau Light Artillery
of Fernandina, Florida. At tho meeting
last night the company decided to invite
their lady friends to assist them in pro
viding and arranging the banquet for
their guests. The Cadets are one of the
most gallant commands in the State, and
stand united in their intentions to do well
by their guests.
TBs Visiting Military.
From Captain T. L. Boss, who has re.
turned from Savannah, where he did ac
tive work in behalf of the nnvelling of
the monument, we learn that there will
be a very largo delegation from the For
est City to witness tho oeremony. Tho
feeling expressed by the ^avannah-
ians was of the moet oordial nature. Tho
large orowd sent by Macon to the Jasper
Centennial will be reciprocated by Savon
nah, and that oity will materially aid
Maoon in the ceremonies, and inaare a
brilliant success.
Six companies and delegations from
other commands will be contributed to
the military pageant. Maoon will de
light to entertain the soldiery of her
sister city, and be glad to reciprooate the
hospitalities showered upon her repre
sentatives at the late Jasper Centen
nial.
Tho Maoon Volunteers.
At a very large meeting of the ac
tive and honorary members of this com
pany, kt Id at thetr armory, suitable ar
rangements were msde, and the requisite
committees appointed, for the entertain
ment of the visiting soldiery on next
Wednesday. Considerable .enthusiasm
was manifested, and this company will,
os they have always done, acquit them-
selves creditably. Tbeir armory will be
illuminated at night. The attention of
their lady fi lends is called to a special
invitation to them elsewhere.
The members of ihe company who still
have guns out are requested to
turn them at once. Many who went with
the oompany on their recent Savannah
trip, failed on their arrival in tho city,
to carry their arms to the armory. All
who do not comply with the request will
be charged the value of tho guns.

The drees makers of Maoon have oom-
aaenosd already to use the Mile End
Spool Cotton, sold by J. C. Bannon A
Co. They pronounce it the smoothes

searing.
One hundred guoe will be fired over
tha Confederate monument on the 29,’h

The hotels of Maoon will not increase
their rates during the fair. Two dollars

The military display on Wednesday
next, at the time of the unveiling of the

The ^Illumination Wednesday Nio-ht-
The oommittee having in charge the

that it would be a fitting finale to tbs
day to have a grand illumination
Wednesday night next of the bnsinesi
portion of the oity, and more especially
those buildings on Mnlberry street near
the monament.
In order lo give definite shape to the
movement they have appointed Messrs

preliminaries. These gentlemen wil 1

Tha Hate Fair.
Notwithstanding the nnfsir treatment
of the State Fair by tbe North Georgia
Fair and Stock Association in continuing
Us lair into next week; notwithstanding
the reports that the Maoon mile traok hed
been washed away and the Park was un
der water; that the hotels were about to
adopt the auioidal policy of raising tbeir
rates of board; and notwithstanding tbe
rumor that the State Fair would bo poet-
poned on account of the Atlanta Fair,.
tbe prospects for the grandest display,
and Fair ever seen in Georgia are
brighter than they were ever known be
fore.
The continuation of the Atlanta fair,
although in bad faith to the State Fair 9
will revert on that fair without injury to
the State Exposition. The people of the
State will stand by the State Pair, and
there is no rubbing that out, and distin
guish between a State enterprise and a
private.venture gotten up to make money
as much as anything else.
The mile track, whieh is admitted to be
& Co. cashed, but failed. During the
day he hod tbe impudeuoe to call at tbe
Hem office and ask a oorreotion of tbe
sriiole taken from tbe Maoon Tilxobaph,
stating that it was uctrne and did him
lcjaslioe. As be could not produce any
proof to show ibat onr contemporary was
wrong, this request was not granted, es
pecially as be failed to return to see
abont the matter, after stating he would
do so. At the very time of this visit we
were cognisant that a trap was set to
catch this sharp individual, and it was
s lccessfuliy sprung about 11 o’clock on
Tuesday nigh:.
Abont eight o’clock on Tuesday night,
Mr. Jadson L. Hand, a merchant of
Mitchell county, called upon Magistrate
Elsiuger and stated that he had been
swindled out of seventy-five dollars by
Byan, on bis insurance dodge, and swore
out a warrant for bis arrest.
Mr. Hand’s statement is that be was
induced to insure his saw mill with Byan
for $1,500 al five per cent, premium,
Byan giving him a receipt for tho
amount in a draft on Walter A Hart, of
Savannah, which tbe sbrewd operator
had oaf hed by Tift & Co., cf Albany.
The receipt stated that if tbe insurance
was rejected the premium would be re
funded. Subsequently, Mr. Hand, not
hearing from Byan became enspioious,
and telegraphed Messrs. Walter A Hart
not to pay the draft, bat it was too late,
the draft having already been cashed in
Albany, as stated. Mr. Hand then came
to Savannah, where he understood Byan
bad meandered, and, as above mentioned,
took the necessary measures to secure his
apprehension.
Byan had registered at tbe Screven
Honee, bat was not fonnd there when the
officer went after him—was aronnd en
joying the sights, as it were. After the
Theatre closed, however, Constable
Wetherhorn, who had been applied lo
to make the arrest, sallied oat, and

Harry J. Byan proves to be no other

he was delivered to tbe Bheriff of Aiken

A Work In Contemplation.
In order to swell the fond for the relief
of the Hood children, it is proposed that
a book be oompiled from contributions by
number of the most popular writers
now on the Georgia press and the work
be dedicated to the Hood orphans as the
contribution of the editors of Georgia.
It is designed that tbe work be well
brought out and suitably illustrated.
Contributions have been solioiied from
Colonel W. T. Thompson, the veteran
editor of the Savannah Ninos, and author
of several works; Mr. James B. Randall,
the poet-editor of the Augusta Chronicle
and Constitutionalist; the versatile at-d
bright H. W. Grad;; Major C. H Smith,
“Bill Arp;’’ Mr. H. S. Edwards, well
known in the Slate as “X. L E,” of
tuis paper ; Mr. Sam W. Small,
“Old SI,” of the Oomiitntion, Mr.
Joe Harris of ths same paper, and Mrs.
Ksry E. Bryan, of the Sunny South. Con
tributions from such an array of talent,
ownot fail to make np a work of more
than pissing interest, and would be a
source of constant revenue. Arrange
ments can be made for its publication at
almost cost, and a number of gentlemen
stand ready to see the enterprise tbiougb
to a saooeaaful issue.
The cause and aid contributions will
eertainly insure a very large sale. The
work will be thoroughly advertised, and
we have no doubt its asle will extend far
beyond the limits of the State. It is
earnestly hoped all who have been asked
will respond, enter into ths enterprise
and s ssi.t in building np the fund for
the support of tbe helpless orphans of
tbe gallant Hood who have been leit
