The Fete ef m Stowaway In tbe
Held ef the Steamship Eng
land.
The Hteam.hip England Bailed from
Liverpool on the 16;h iaet., and reacted
this port yesterday, after a rongh pas
sage. When a longshoreman dea ended
into the fore hold which way stowed foil
of barrels, packed so closely as to leave
only a space of about three feet between
them and the deck, he heard talking,an-J
suddenly touched something that his
lantern showed to be a human body.
Soon afterwards the Bailors dragged to
tbe light a man, (till alive and con
scious bnt so rednoed by etarvo-
toin. ' that he was only a liv
ing skeleton, with skin like shriv
elled parchment drawn over hie bones.
The ship’s phyaioisn tried to foroe nour
ishment down the etowawsy’s throe*;
bathe was too far gone, and within hal:
an hour he died. It was evident that he
was a foreigner, and when he was first
taken on deck an Austrian girl from
amonj the steerage passengers succeeded
in understanding a few words ttat he
was able to murmur. He begged for wa
ter, said that he bad tasted neither food
nor drink sicca the day the ship sailed,
and that his name was “Harry.” That
was all ,be was able to say. His body
was sent to the morgue. In the narrow
space into which tbe stowaway had
squeezed himself jnat before the tteam-
ttaip Bailed, he cotfld only lie down or
orawl around over the heads of the bar
rels, bat could not stand nor oould he
sit npright. Hie clothing showed that
in his terrible hanger he had gnawed il.
as he bad also gnawed bits of wood from
the barrels.
Hoesiblz Dsatu it a tiaapant’s Coil
One of tbe most intrepid wild beast

man of ooiossal stature and txiraordmaij

before n crowded audience m Madrid tbe
other day one of his moat sensational feat,
which consisted ia allowing n hnge bo.
constrictor, over twenty feet in length, to
enfold bis bedy in its tremendous coils,
when suddenly a piercing cry escapee
him, which was greeted by the audience
with a round of applause under tbe im
pression that its ntterwuoa consumed a
put of the per. or manor. It proved, bow
e ver to oe the death agony. The gigdu
tic snake had tightened its Ouils am-
crashed poor Earolyi’s life out of him,
with one terrifio squeeze. As his head
fell back and hts eyes became fired in a
glassy state the plaudits lied away, nnt.
were snoceeded by toe stillness of utter
consternation. The snake and Us litel-e-
viotim swayed for a second or two of in
expressible horror, and then toppleo
over on the boards of the stage; but the
ooa did not in tbe least relax ms grip
upjn tbe corpse, which remained foi
more than an hoar imprisoned in it.-
bideone tbralldom, nobody dariogto ap
proach tbe lithe monster, of whose powei
snob appalling proof hod been given. At
length it occurred to ouo of Karolyi’s at-
t-ndants to place n bowl of milk ins
cage within sight of tbe mighty set pern,
which slowly unsound lt.elt from the
dead body and glided into his den, irre
sistibly tempted thereto by its favorite
dainty. A post-mortem examination ot
tbn unfortunate athlete’s reiiaina dis

lures of his bones, effeoted by the con
striction ot thu serpent’s coils. His death

Enormous Incueasn or r-LanrATioits
ov Cinchona Tubes—The high price ot
quinine is stimulating the planting of cin-
cnona trees In large quantities in tropi
cal countries other than that of whiou
they are natives. At one time nearly all
the Peruvian balk, as it is commonly
oalled, was drawn from the eastern slope:
of the Cordilleras. Trees of this genus,
produced of the alkaloids of quinine ano
cinchona, were not to be found outaidt
of South America, between tho latitude,
twenty degrees south and ten degrees
north. Of late years plantations o:
cinchona trees have been formed
in Java, and the Datch colonies
in India, and on the Island of St.
Helena, the bark produced in India, cn
the Netigherry hills, boing remarkaolj
rioh in quinine, and those who now find
themselves in possession of well-grown
plantations of cinchona trees derive at
the preeent prices of quinine laigo profits
trom the sale of the bark. Nearly nil the
bark imported into the Hatted States
c-mies from Sooth America, and as tin
supply there is ananaily diminishing,
greater efforts are being put forth to grow
tne trees ia other tropical countries. A
Ceylon paper states tnat by tbo end ot
the present year there will have been
planted out in that island thirty millions
of seedlings of the cinchona trees,
and that five years hence there will be
fifty millions of trees; but ns the faiiurt--
aro estimated to average fifty per cent, ot
tue number of seedlings planted, tbe
aurvivi -g trees at the end of the next
five years are put at twenty-five millions.
At present the consumption cf cinchona
bark throughout the world is stated to be
.en millions of pounds annually, and the
demand for this famous febrifuge is only
limited by its high coat. The extensive
plantations of cinchona trees set out
within the past ten years, and which are
oeing annually increased in new fields,
promise beforo long to make the supply
equal to the domsad, and to put it at »
prise that will bring it within tnc meanB
of all persona Deeding this valuable reme
