In yesterday’s Ouutitxii** appears an
anonymous communication which sndeav-
ors to reflect on the city police of Macon.
It is charged that effioer McCafferty went
np to a peaceable and quiet individnai
and robbed him of his walking cane
giving no reaoon except that he was a po
liceman. Ti*e piece carries Improbability
on its face, yet m some might be misied,
we take pleasure in giving the facta in
tbe case.
Offioer McCsfferty was on duty at the
Brown House daring the week. On the
evening in question he went to the park,
and to eDjoy tbe sights of the fur, having
obtained leave of absence so to do. He
was of course at that time off dnty, and
bad neither billy or uniform, but carried
a light walking otne, which had been
presented to him on the Monday previous
by Mr. A. M. Williams, of Fourth street.
After entering th* groauds he went to e
locality where a teat of strength was be
ing made.
There was present a party of young
man from Jones county, who were aomt-
what under the influence of liquor. A
quarrel arose, and one of tbe young men
drew his pistol, when the effioer, who was
not on duty, seired and disarmed him
The cane was dropped in the straggle,
end was picked up by the young maD
whom the Gonrttiution ealla "Cummlnge
of Savannah,” It was the demanding
from him of the officer’s own cane tbai
gave rise to the malicious and false re
port.
The Maoon police darlng.the Fair did
well, and deserve praise for their general
oenduot.
Delivered Himself Bp.
Mr. Jerry O’Connor, who waa convict
ed at the last term of the Saperior Coart
of the homicide of a darkey, while ho
was on tbe polioe force of the oity, has
returned to Macon and delivered himself
ap to his bondsmen. Mr. O’Connor’s
oase was carried to tho Supreme Court,
and the sentence or the Court below
sustained.
It sentences Mr. O’Connor to two years
in the penitentiary. He says that he ban
returned to meet hiB sentence like a man.
He wishes, however, to be plaoad if pos
sible, in the camp of Boaderaat A John
son, near Augusta, as his wife and fami
ly were living In that vicinity. A petl
tioo to Governor Colquitt to have him
located there will be circulated in the
oity soon, and with it a similar petition
signed by a large number of the most
prominent oiiizmw of Augusta.
mealing cushions.
Yesterday a prominent citizen had bis
oarriage house broken into, and several
flue cushions carried off. The entrance
was effected by tearing away severa
planks from the side of the house, not
withstanding the fact that it was broad
daylight. Several similar oases have
been reported to us reoenlly, and parties
are put on their guard against trading
for cushions offered promiscuously. Saoh
persons should be promptly reported.
Last night Lieutenant Hurley and
officer Bishop arrested three negro boys,
who had been engaged in this kind of
stealing. Their plan of operation was to
out the customs open, extract the mosB
and sell it to some dealer. The small
quantities in whioh it was presented excit
ed no suspicion nntil recently.
