Heavy Balts.
From a gentleman who has been in at
tendance ca tho Sapcnor Court of Greono
county wo learn that eomo heavy civi 1
suits had been deoided against tho Geor
gia Road in that court a day or two
since. Tho suits arose from injuries
sustained by passengers and others in an
accident which occurred nearly t'
veai-i since, in which tho train was
wrecked by a cow and the engineer was
burned to-death in hiB engino. Several
persem were killed. Three suits, ag
gregating about $7,000, hays been de
oided against the road, and the deoislon
of them will probably givo rlso to a
number of others. It la probable tho
cases will bo carried to tho Supreme

Near Pert Valley.
A sensation was crested in Fort Valley
yesterday, by tho finding of the body
a notorious colored burglar, Henry Walk-
er, suspended to a tree In a piece
woods sear that place. The body i
swinging at full length in the breeze.
The rope by which it was suspended
passed oyer a limb of the tree, and was
made fast by being tied to a root of the
tree, which projected above the earth.
The man had evidently been dead some
hours. The eight was a ghastly one, and
brought a thrill of horrer to all. The
body was cut down and a coroner's jury
cmpannelled, and the case examined be
fore it. The evidenoe of Beversl wit
nesses were taken, but littlo light was
thrown on the execution by their testi
mony. A verdict that the deceased come
to his death at the hands of unknown
parties, wee rendered.
It sems on Monday night a party
armed men went to the guardhouse
the town and took the deceased out of it,
carried him to tho woods and there hung
him. The crime for which he was oon
fined was burglary. He was a few days
since captured in Bntlsnd district of this
county, and was thence taken to Fort
Valley to answer before the oourts of
Houston county. In that county he was
known and his reputation was very bad.
According to bis own confession he b2g
been the leader of a gang of burglars Bines
1865. Among his burglarious exploits,
to many of which he confesses, are ena
merited Colonel Hardieon’s residence
In Fort Talley, where he got one hun
dred end thirty-five dollars in cash
besides personal property; the bank
Fort Valley last year, at whieh be was
shot at by the town marshal and res
turned thefire; the residence of Mr.
W. Murray and others.
Abont ten dsyssinoe,his operations be
came more frequent. The store house
of Mr. F. A. Honser was robbed of sev
eral hundred dollars’ worth of goods.
Soon after, he entered the residence
Mrs. N. E. Brown, rifling the tranks
tho sarco room in which the ladies of tho
house wore sleeping.
Mr. A. J. Martin’s residence was also
entered, and articles taken therefrom.
When captured, much of the goods were
found in his possession and restored to
the owners.
On Monday, in a conversation at tho
guard house, the darkey boosted of his

centered all the paints that go to mako

the day. We hope to see a large audience
in attendance, and fool confident that
every one will bs dalightod at the per

as much attention as any other American
drama produced in years, naving been
played to overflowing houses compoted of

visited. Tho drama will bs produoed

are promised, will be the best that has

To-morrow.will bo Thanksgiving Day,
snd the regulation turkey will be duly
prepared and partaken of. The observ
ance of this day has beeu better in the
South for the post two or three years than
any time since tho war. The gradual ef
facing of the harsher lines in memo
ry’s portraiture cf the ecenes of the war
ho3 made a change In our people, and
now, althought the first DrocUmation
comes from a Republican President, they
are willing to return thanks in accord
ance to his suggestion for the many
blessings they enjoy.
The day will be mers observed in Ma
con to-morrow than in fourteen years.
It is suggested that the day be mede a
general holiday, and that the basinets
men of the city give ss mnch freedom os
possible to their clerks and employees.
In the Northern cities business is entirely
suspend-d aud the day begun with re
ligious worship snd then given over to
feasting and pleasure. In America we
neve too few holidays—the Europeans
too many. Neither are those days set
apart os holidays in Amsrioa strictly ob
served, but each individual follows the
bent of his own inclination. This year
religious services will be held in several
of the churches. It is hoped our busi
ness men will give their clerks a obanoe.
also boasted that a jail could not
hold him, that ho had broken out
of four already, that his purpose was
to kill any ouo attempting to arrest him.
Ho said also that at the time of the
Houser robbery, ho had an axe with him,
which ho proposed to uso in that way. It
is suppoeed those boasts and threats ex
cited such indignation in tho mind3 of
several of the citizens that, under
cover of night, ;tfcey determined to take
tho law into their own hands, believing
that ho was a case which tho law coult
hardly reach.
Another theory of tho hanging is that
it was done by his associates in orimo to
prevent implication, as in his confession
the prisoner had mentioned many names
of persons interested in his misdeeds.
The perpetrators of the deed are un
known and the matter is as vet a mystery.
The best oitizens of Fort Valley ore in
dlgnant and denounce tho proceedings in
strong terms, and wo hope the perpetra
tors will yot bo ferreted oat. The com'
mission of abarglary, when proven before
the courts, does not forfeit the
life of tho criminal. Had the deceased
committed a very brutal murder or one
other terrible crime thero, might then
have been some excuse in a community
carried away by inflamed passion for
such a deed. Bat under tho present
circumstances, in view of all tho faots
now in possession, tho lynching is noth
ing less than a groat outrage on human
lty, liberty, life and law.
Entertainmont Last Evening*
Last evening at the parsonage of th e
Mulborry Street Methodist Church n very
enjoyablo oniertainment was given by
tho “Willing Workora” of that ohnrch.
Tho entertainment had heen twice post
poned, bnt notwithstanding thia fact
vory nico audience assembled in the
parlors of tho parsonage. Tho entertain
ment was opened by an instrumental sole
by Professor J. T. Coley on tho piano,
the execution boingliko tho Professor's
other musical efforts, good.
Miss Tochio Williams sang “J. C.
Bacio” in a very pretty manner.
•‘The NowBboy’s Death,” read by Mis3
Minnie Baas, attracted tho attention of
all, tho olooution of tho reader being
particularly attractive;
•‘Heart s-esso” a recitation by Miss An
nie MocDonell, was very prettily done
indeed, tho young lady evincing muoh
talent ss a reader.
Mr. R. D. Clancy sang a comic solo,
and was called back on an encore.
“Josiah Allen’s wife’s visit to A. T.
Stewart’s,” was read in very excellent
style by Miss Leila Burke, tho humor of
the selection being admirably brought
ont.
Miss Bessie Rogers, in a very sweet
and engaging manner, recited “The little
hero.”
Miss Clifford Spain sang one of Mil'
liard’a best productions, “Waiting,” in
admirable style.
Selections from tho Opera Martha wero
well played by Miss Toohie Williams.
Mr. B, D. Clanoey sang "Tho Babies
on onr Block” in a very appropriate man
ner, eliciting the applause of the entire
audienoe.
Miss Hattie Clarke recited "Ave Marie.”
The poem is full of tender, pathetlo pas
sages, and requires a good reader to give
them their full significance. Tho recita
tion wae very fine.
The evening’s programme was closed
by a vocal solo by Miss Tscie Daniel,
who sang “The Long, Long, Weary Day”
in an exquisite manner. The piece is one
whieh retains its beauty and never fails
to win admiration, especially when snug
Ay such an accomplished vosalist as Miss
Daniel.
The entertainment was qnite a success
in every way.

The friends of tho Library should not
allow the projeot of having a fair for its

Adah Riohmond and Andy McKay, her
agent, had a dispute, and he has left the

The lessees of McCall’s pond have
posted notices, forbidding any hunting or
fishing in or around the pond. Some of
the boys have been shooting the tame
geeee which live around the pond.
The displays in the western sky on
these cool November evenings at suu3et,
ore frequently gorgeous, realizing the ex
pression, “Tho evening’s crimson
weather.”
It is suggested that the Frayne-Tiffiny
combination be known aa the Jock combi
nation, in honor of the trained dog.-
The sale of seats for the “Danites” this
evening indicates a large audience.
Si Slocum has ail the firing in it that
the most sanguinary deity of the upper
loft could wish, yet lacks that arrange
ment of plat and probability of incident
to make it interesting to the most hair-
brained admirer of tho powder mine
drama.
The Rents party will ba tho next show
at Balaton Hall after the Danite9.
The dramatie critics about tho city,
say that the Danites has more tone
about them than Si Siocnm.

Yesterday moaning Mr. Wm. Peilzer,
who has been engaged in the gun smith
basinets at the old Hodgkin’s stand cn
Mulberry street, left tho city under rather
peculiar circumstances. It seems he has
gotten in arrears for his store rent, board
and for sundry other things in the
city bought from various persons. It
has been known that he was in failing
circumstances for some time.
He baa recently received a new and
very pretty stock of goods, a portion of
which was exhibited at the State Fair
and received several premiums. After
his departure it has been ascertained
that his etock is unpaid for, and has been
transferred to a third party, who has a
mortgage upon it. Mr. Peitzer does not
seem to have made any very close secret
of his departure, except to his creditors.
To others he stated that he was going to
Berlin on account of the feeble health of
his father and the death of his brother.
We understand instructions have been
given to have him arrested on hie arrival
in New York. Yesterday a gentleman
who hod » pistol at the shop being re
paired, went for his weapon and found
everything under loex and key, and it
was impossible for him to get his prop
erty. We understand there are quite
a number of similar cases in the city.
Hr. Peitzer had the reputation of being
a flue workman, and was to all appearan
ces doing a safe and profitable business.
We hope a better showing may be made
for him than the present one. His lia
bilities will probably amount to twenty-
five hundred or three thousand dol
lars.
