Some excitement was caused at tlie
Brown House last evening by tlie acci
dental discharge of a pistol by a -colored
boy named Gas Terrell, in the barber

a crowd gathered, and thoughts of a trag

the cause of the excitement was soon re

A Habeas Corpus cose.
— Yesterday in the Superior Court the
case of the State against John Miller, col
ored, charged with an assault with intent
to murder Mr. Birdsong in the Rutland
district, was tried and the defendant found
guilty of an assault. The circumstances
of the case were the same as those in
which this same defendant was convicted
on Monday of an assault upon Constable
Cain. Judge Simmons sentenced him
three months on the last and six months
on the other case.
The Burge murder case has been set for
Monday next.
Tlie bail cases will be taken up by the
court to-day and witnesses who hare been
summoned are expected to be promptly on
hand or they will be severely dealt with
by the court.
The cases for gaining will be taken up
this morning.
At chambers, Judge Simmons has
very interesting habeas corpus case now
being determined. It is against Aaron
Bowman, charged witli burglary. The
darkey was put on trial for larceny from
the house, in the County court, hut before
the termination of the case Judge Holt
derided to bind the defendant over to an
swer the charge of burglary in the night
time. Tlie legal points involved are of
great interest to the legal profession.
Judge Simmons has withheld his judg

BREVITIES.

Last evening a party of nine, consist-
ingortbr family of Mr. J. T. Middle-
brooks, of Jones county, left via the At
lanta train for Arkansas. Mr. Middle-
brooks has been residing about four
miles from Clinton, but lias concluded to
emigrate to Arkansas, a short distance
above Little Rock. We hope he will be
successful in his new home, but expect to
see him in the land of Jones again in
year from tlie present writing.
Ball in Sfontezumn.
Oil Thursday evening, tlie 18th inst.,
the first ball of the season will lie given in
Montezuma at Minor’s new liall, by the
young gentlemen of tlie place. Kessler’s
hand lias licen engaged for tlie occasion.

House, G. C. Carmichael, T. B. McKenzie,

C’lmnuckali Hop.
On Monday evening next, at the hall of
the Hebrew Young Men’s Literary Asso
ciation, a liop will be given in the aus
pices of tiiat Association. Tlie Chanuckali
is a festival of tlie Hebrews which lasts
eight days. With tlie orthodox Jews
there b a custom of lighting a caudle for
each day of tlie festival, making eight
lights in all, at tlie end of tlie time. On
the evening of tlie hop Mr. John Hartz
will illustrate tlie custom in the hall.
Many tickets have been sold and the hop
will be finely attended.
PoMtponcd.
Last evening the lecture of Dr. J. Wil
liam Jones, which was to have been de
livered at Masonic Hall, was postponed
on account of the inclemency of the
weather. A number of persons assem
bled at the Hall at the time appointed for
the lecture. It b possible it may yet be
delivered in tlie city next Saturday even
ing, as efforts arc being made to prevail
upon the distinguished gentleman to re
main fiver for that purpose. The lecture
has been pronounced by competent critics
who have heard it. to be one of the finest
of the kind ever heard.
Art Illustrations.
Last evening the Art Illustrations at
Ralston Hall were continued and the
audience was taken through Egypt
and the Holy Land. Both countries
are full of interest to all who
study history, either sacred or pro
fane, and the views last evening in
their true and clear presentation of the
scenes of the East made a deep and pleas-
ureable impression on all. Tlie lecture
accompanying the illustration was deliv
ered by Mr. Sodercr. Some of the views
in Palestine was remarkably fine, and all
were truly interesting. At the close of
the entertainment tlie transformation
scene, ‘-Rock of Ages,” was repeated.
This evening Rome, ancient and modern,
the best perhaps of the entire series, will
be given and if the weather is clear a very
huge audience will attend.
Pistol Work in Brunswick.
On day before yesterday afternoon a se
rious but not necessarily fatal shooting af
fair occurred in Brunswick between two
ritiaens, Mr. Stewart and Mr. Mclver,
who stand well in the community.
The two men met cadi other in the
streets, about five o’clook in the afternoon,
when Stewart drew his pistol and com
menced firing at Mclver, until five cham
bers of hb pistol were exhausted. Three
of the shots took efieri, two in the breast
and one in the neck of Mr. Mclver.
Tin* origin of the whole affitir is said to
have been of a strictly private family
matter in which Mr. Stewart felt himself
to haTC been greatly wronged and had
ordered Mclver to leave the city by five
o’clock. On Jus finding him still in the
place the shooting took place as above de
scribed. The whole affair is very mudi
regretted in Brunswick on acconnt of tlie
standing and friends of those engaged.
Xr. (l. S. Obear.
We invite special attention to the adver
tisement of Mr. George S. Obear, which
appears elsewhere. He has on hand one
of the most select and choice stocks in
general bouse furnishing goods to lie
found anywhere, and besides an elegant
assortment of holiday goods in Ids line.
In vases he lias a very elegant display,
ranging from delicate cut glass, hud vases,
to large mantel ornaments of Bohemian
glass. A large supply of fine plated ware
presents a very attractive appearance on
one side of the establishment. Among
the novelties in the stock are dessert china
sets beautifully decorated in the latest
stvles, rain-drop tea-pots, and irredescent
glass vases. These last disclose all the
colors of tlie rainbow from every point at
a hicli they are viewed. In short, Mr.
Obear has a fine stock well worthy of a
Close examination.
—A Clement Attachment will soon
reach Macon.
—Macon will have forty-two iron
street postal boxes.
—The shipments of oranges passing
through the city arc immense.
—Reserved scats at Burr Brown’s can
be had for the Art Illustrations without
additional cost.
—A colored man by the name of Riley
Jossey was yesterday put in the barracks
for stealing some clothing from an old
colored man.
—Jack Jackson, colored, was arrested
yesterday on a charge of stealing com
from the lot of Mr. Lawrence Henry sev
eral niglits since.
—Mr. J. A. Hill is having the track of
the street railway covered over with earth
and will in this way greatly improve the
streets traversed by the street railroad.
—Macon pines for dramatic amuse
ments. Maretzek’s opera troupe has
evaporated and nothing is promised at
Ralston Hall for some time to come.
—A tall stranger last night, acted in
such a peculiar manner on Fourth street
as to lead to the suspicion that he was
an escaped lunatic from Millcdgcvillc.
—The elegant new three story brick
building being put up near tlie comer of
Poplar and Second streets, for Messrs.
Collins & Winn, is rapidly approaching
completion.
—-The new stores on Cherry street, soon
to be erected by Mr. G. B. Roberts, will
add greatly to the appearance of the
block on which they will lie loca
ted.
—A gentleman of this city whose horse
was badly foundered a few days since,
effected a speedy cure by wrapping the bit
of the bridle with the bark of the root of
common field sassafras, renewing it when
eaten away by the animal. This was
done one day and the next the horse was
cured and is now as good as ever. The
same animal in the Spring was similarly
affected and was four montlis in a disa
bled condition. The remedy is worth re
membering as others have tried it suc
cessfully.
A Daring Case of Stealing:.
On Wednesday evening, about dark, a
bale of cotton was stolen from the cotton
yard of the Central railroad, at the foot of
Cherry street, and hauled off on a dray. A
gentleman, who happened to be near the
gas house, saw the hale being hauled
around in that neighborhood, in rather a
suspicious manner, and gave notice of the
fact. The parties with the bale were pur
sued through many alleys, and the cotton
was at length discovered hastily secreted
in an out-liouse on College Hill.
The parties stealing the cotton were not
discovered at the time and have not neen
arrested. The yard was supplied with
two watchmen, but tlie bale was neverthe
less stolen out. It belonged to Colonel J.
P. Fort, and was last evening sent to
Messrs. English & Hugucnin’s warehouse.
Tlie cotton was recovered by officers C. M.
Wood and McCafferty.

We shall this season introduce a novel feature to th"
citizens of Macon. In every department of our business
we shall offer goods which are positively worth
Two, Three, Four, and Even Five Times
the price we shall ask.
It is a principle with us never to advertise a sale unless
we have something really desirable to sell. We Keep in
mind the old story of the shepherd’s boy, who in malicious
sport, frequently alarmed the village by his cry of
“THE WOLF. THE WOLF!”
* ♦
The villagers ran to his assistance only to find them
selves deceived; so they resolved to pay no more atten
tion to the boy’s alarm. But one day the wolf really d:
come, then the boy cried out ia earnest but no heed w;
given to his cries, and the wolf quietly devoured the sheep.
Now just as the villagers acted towards the boy so do
our people act towards those merchants, who ory out
‘‘BARGAINS. BARGAINS,”
when, in fact, they have no bargains.
We believe it a lalse policy, and it is only because we
know that we present decided inducements, that we urge
upon our people to inspect the goods advertised below.
Please take note of the following : Our entire stock
will be arranged in sections and so displayed that our
customeis v/ill be enabled to select a Present suitable for
old or young, at any price from
$®>Five Cents to Ten Dollars,
without the inconvenience of looking over the entir
stock. For instance, one section will contain articles fo
One Dollar, as shown by card.
