Free Fight in a Church.
New VoitK, December 22.—A special
from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, says the
people in this city are in a fever of excite
ment to-day, owing to a fisticuff fight
which took place in tlie First Reformed
Presbyterian church last night.
Some weeks ago, the congregation voted
for pastor, Rev. Ncvin Woods Ido receiving
107 votes against 110 for tlie other candi
dates. A majority of trustees were bitterly
opposed to Woodside, and charged that his
election was the result of illegal votes.
The majority of tlie congregation wore de
termined that Woodside should lie tlieir
l>astor, especially os the call was sustained
liy the Presbytery. An appeal was taken
to the Synod and since then there have
been bitter quarrels among tlie members
of tlie church. Tlie Woodside faction
triumphed over tlieir enemies, and on ono
occasion, notwitlistanding the existence of
an injunction restraining Woodside from
preaching until the opiieai was decided,
gained admission to the church by strat-
gy, held the place all day and listened to
a sermon by tlie pastor in the evening.
Last night the quarrel culminated in a
free fight. There were rumors during the
day that serious trouble Was brewing.
Both factions were present iu full force,
and tlw.ro w«» a largo attendance of out
siders, Attracted by the prospect of a row.
The trouble began early. Woodside
wanted to preach but his opponents had
another clergyman whom they wished to
preach. Both parsons waxed hot and
excited. The spectators gave vent to
their feelings in remarks designed to en
courage tlieir favorite. The trustees and
Sunday school teachers took side and
shouted excitedly. One of tlie parsons
essayed to mount the rostrum. lie was
seized by his antagonist and roughly
hustled from the steps.
This led to a general fight. 'It was thick
est around the altar, but all over the
church were heard the sound of Wows.
Many of the women screamed and fainted,
but some of tlie stronger minded encour
aged the combatants" with cheers. Two
or three males took advantage of the con
fusion to settle old scores among them
selves. For a quarter of an hour tlie bat
tle raged furiously. Heads were punch
ed, eyes were blackened, arms broken and
women knocked down. Tlie yells and
screams were frightful. The police were
called in, and after some difficulty suc
ceeded in quelling the riot. Several ar
rests were made. Tlie church this morn
ing presents a sorry- appearance. Tlie
pews are broken, remnants of gas globes
strewn the floor, tlie hymn books and bi-
bles are scattered in all directions, as if
they had been used as missiles, and a large
quantitv of hairpins and bangs have been
gathered up. The utmost indignation
prevails in church circles. Tlie matter
will be investigated by the Presbytery,
and it is expected that there will be some
clerical suspensions. The rival pastors
were in the thickest of the fray.
