Our loss was one killed and two wounded. Snow fell here during tlie night, but is disappearing. NIGHT DISPATCHES. The Loss of the Steamer Bowassa— Heavy Loss of Life. I.ommix, December 2:5.—Tlie part of the crew of tlie steamer Bowassa landed at tjm-i-nstown to-day by tlie ship Mallow- dale. consisting of tlie chief engineer, doctor, Imatswain and six seamen. Tlicy were picked up on tlie 5th instant in an o|«-n Isiat by tlie Mallowdale. Tlie Bow assa bad 180 passengers, of which 105 embarked at Liverpool and seventy-five at Comnnia. Tlie crew numbered fifty-four men. After leaving Corunna on the 24tli of November, she experienced terrific weather and srning a leak on the first of December, and tlie severity of tlie weather increasing, site was abandoned on the second about 350 miles southwest of Kazall. Tlie Captain and second officer remained on tlie sinking steamer. The •tcw and passengers embarked in eleven Ixiats. The nine survivors have no hope for tin' other lioats. having, before they separated, seen one boat capsized, drown ing all of its occupants. The Augusta Races. ArorsTA. No entrance is to be charg ed in anv of the races, which will be hold under the rules of the Savannah Jockcy Club. Horses are already in training here from Maryland. North and South Caroli na. Georgia. Tennessee and Kentucky. Tin* track and stables are in fine coiult- tion. and the accommodations are ample. An interesting feature will be tlie Roman hippodrome races, to be run every day by \V. W. Highly, of Illinois, who brings six bonce for tin' purpose. All race men are invited to bring their horses. Entries are to be kept open until tlie night before each race. Savannah and Charleston races commence 20th of January and Otli of February- Fire in Augusta. Aversta. Georgia. December 23.— A verv dostntetive fire occurred at Wavncbro last night. Tlie stores of W. A Wilkins. W. L. Marshall. 1’. IS. Beall E. Paul. J. A. rolhill, McCatbene & Co. and 1. Schweiz were consumed. Several persons were iujured and one colored man fatally. The insurance is $45,000; loss not stated. Appointments. Washington - , December 23.—II. C. C. ill wood has been appointed internal revenue (auger for the Louisiana district, and O. W. McDermitt, store keeper and gauger for the second district of Georgia. Ayrestcwx, New Jersey, December 23.—The residence of Jones Gleason was entirely consumed by fire yesterday morn ing, and three of his children, two boys and a girl, eldest ten years of age, perish ed in the flames. The Tichborne Claimant Loxdox, December 23.—An announce ment was made yesterday, and extensive ly circulated and placarded in London and tlie provinces, stating that the Attor ney General, having granted his fiat for a writ of error in the case of the Ticli- bome claimant, an association is being formed to assist in tlie prosecution of the fiat to obtain a remission of tlie sentence against the claimant, and to promote the passing of tlie bill in the forthcoming ses sion of Parliament, for a reversal of the judgment In tlie case. Evidence of points of mistaken identity being forthcoming, and for the restoration to the claimant of tlie properties, heirlooms and possessions 'the Tichborne baronetcy. Indications. Washington, December 23.—Indica tions for the South Atlantic States. North east to Southeast winds, rising, followed by falling barometer, stationary tem perature, cloudy and rainy weather. MIDNIGHT DISPATCHES. Preparations for M. DeLesseps’ Re ception. Panama, December 12.—A committee lias been appointed by the local govern ment to make preparations for the proper reception or M. DeLesseps and his party, due at Aspinvval) by the steamer Lafay ette, on tlie 2fH.li instant. The programme will consist of a banquet and a ball, illu mination of tlie city, and a bull light. M. DeLesseps will remain here two weeks and visit the United Slates via California- Railroad travel is still inter rupted in consequence of tlie recent storm. Largo amotmts of freight are ac cumulating on tlie Isthmus, and by tlie time tlie road is ready for traflie, there ill probably lie from 25,000 to 30,000 tons of cargo to move. January 1st may probably see transit again in operation. A Public Land Decision. Washington, December 23.—Tlie Secretary of the Interior to-day rendered a decision of importance to all purchasers of public lands by private entry, holding that whenever, prior to patenting, it is dis covered that the land was previously offer ed and entered as agricultural is really mineral in its character, entry must lie cancelled anil tlie land reserved for entry under the laws especially applicable to mining lands. Tlie issue was presented by tlie case of Smith Scroggin vs. Charles E Culver et al., involving the title to a tract of 2,000 acres of land in Camden, Ar kansas district. Foreign. Queenstown, December 23. — The survivors of Bowassa started immediately for Liverpool. It appears that a panic oc curred among tlie passengers and crew. Tlie survivors state that no order to launch tlie boats and prepare _ for the abandonment of tlie vessel was given by the officers. Tlie crew themselves, low ered the boats without waiting for orders. About a (lozeii passengers got into tlie boats with a part of tlie crew, The re mainder of the passengers went down in the vessel with the captain, second mate three engineers, eleven firemen, three stewards, flic carpenter and two boys. One of the lioats swamped alongside the steam er and its occupants, (hvc men were drowned.) The survivors state that at nine o’clock on the night of tlie abandon ment of the vessel, they saw a rocket as cend from the steamer, and soon after her masthead lights were seen to disappear. _ London, December 23.—The Paris correspondent of tlie Daily Xeics says: Perhaps M. De Freycinct’s programme was too far advanced for President Grevy, who before accepting it preferred to sec what could be done with tlie Left. M. Leon Say would fail to. satisfy tlie re quirements obligatory upon the head of the constitutional ministry far more than M. De Freycinct, and I do not doubt that M. De Freycinct will again he sent for. Pork Packer’s Strike. Chicago, December 23.—There is no change in tlie pork packer's strike. The D rover’s Journal, this afternoon, pub lishes a letter from an influential Catholic priest of tlie Nativity chnrcb, whicli he advises tlie union to rescind their last or der, that packers shall not hire other workmen than those belonging to the un ion. This, it is thought, will have good effect, especially as the strikers are in a bad financial condition, and employers are good natured over the depreciation in hogs and the advance in provisions. The Huntsville, Alabama, papers report a very deplorable accident as having recen tly happened to two negro men near that city.
