A Curious Story About a Bill.

The Birthplace of Washington.
BaltimorA Sun.J
Fifty-four miles southeast of Washing
ton, as the crow flies, fifty-one northeast
of Iticlimand, is Pope’s creek, in the coun
ty of Westmoreland where Washington
was bom. Two hundred and forty-seven
years ago the traveler from Europe as his
ship, worn by months of storms, sailed up
tlie broad Potomac, which is here four
and one half miles wide, might have been
a low, one-story, gambrel-footed house on
the shore of a creek on his right. Tlie
house was a large anil magnificent one for
those days, and was surrounded by offices
and negro cabins. While tlie traveler
was watching the scene on the shore,
ship was sailing up the creek, and an
choring in front of the house, sent its
owner tlie much-needed clothing and ar
ticles of war, and the last news from Lon
don. The sight that struck the traveler's
eyes was novel and pleasing. The house
was only half a mile from the river, and
across the river the shores of Maryland
weratatM Bsanatul adoarsvnep of tlie
river down to where it poured into tlie
Chesapeake Bay. Down by the inoutli of
creek the soil was rich and mouldy, and
the rice and Indian com nourished; near
at hand the soil was rich and covered
witii huckleberries, cranberries, and cliiu-
qiu'pin bushes. Behind, on the lowlands,
a clump of live-oaks, cedars, and cypres
ses gave a partial air of gloomy quiet to
the place. Higher up in the background,
on the ridges between tlie creeks, grew
the forests primeval of ash, oak, beech
and hickory. In summer the clearing
around the house was brilliant with the
colors of the May apple, tlie yellow jas
mine, the acacia and the red-flowering
chestnut. At the left of the house were
tho hazel hushes, where grew the peas,
beans and vetches for fodder and food.
In tlie kitchen garden were the maycock,
maracock and tlie sonorously-named tan-
vanockonomiuge. Among the few flow
ers carefully tended under the windows
tho cardinal and moccasin flowers were
for the first time cultivated. Over the
sides of the house tlie wax myrtle crept,
from whose berries tho green tinted, pleas
ant scented candles for winter use were
made. The wild turkey, quail and par
tridge crept around the outskirts of the
wood, and the monotonous crooning of
the negroes at work was varied by the
song of the turtle dove, the red bird, mock
ing-bird and Baltimore oriole, as they
flashed through the branches of the trees,
and down the river the shrill cries of the
curlew, crane and heron were heard. To
day there are no negroes, no forest, no
house, and its site is only marked by a
rude stone laid there by George Wash
ington Parke Curtis. _
High Art Theatrical Criticism.

Mary Anderson is a marvel, and can
take oh more emotions and dresses in a
single evening than any of them. She is
about six feet in height when in repose,
but when her frame is charged with
emotions and she gets mad or excited she
seems to raise right up out of the
stage and lelescope until she is eighteen
or nineteen feet high, and others look like
dwarfs.
She is the most versatile actress we
ever sat in front of. At times she would
pnt on a sweet, lively look, and you! °° *

A Warm Deception,
Tlie North Carolina negro emigrants to
Indiana are meeting a warm reception in
that State. A Shelbyville, (Ind.) dis
patch to the New York Timet, says:
The day after their arrival much feel-
iiig was manifested against them. 1
nights ago another arrival was expected,
and a large crowd assembled at the depot
to prevent the stopping of the colored peo
ple at that place. When the train stopped
it was surrounded, says tlie Times, by the
howling crowd of men, with blood in their
eyes and curses on their lips, only wait
ing to mob the darkeys if they attempted
to leave the cars. The negroes,. however,
did not get off, and the cars carried them
on to Indianapolis.
Senator Ransom’s late speech on this
subject in reply to certain questions from
a Senator of Massachusetts,.was suggestive.
Says the North Carolinian: But from
where do you find this exodus? From
North Carolina, where the universal, con
current, unexceptional testimony is that
they are as well treated as they are any
where 011 the face of the earth, the colored
editor says as well as they are anywhere
on the globe. Then there is no cause for
tbeir leaving North Carolina. But they are
going to Indiana, where they are wanted
and only wanted for one purpose. They
are not wanted there, my friend from In
diana says, to work the fields; for they
have excellent and abundant labor. They
are not wanted there to build railroads,
for they have them already built. They
can he wanted there for but one purpose—
to carry Indiana for tlie Republican can
didate for the Presidency in I860.
Mr. President, let us look a little further
at this matter. Whence does tills exodus
conic? I want to satisfy the Senator from
Massachusetts. You cross the Potomac;
you have passed through Maryland. You
cross through Virginia. There are a great
many black people in Virginia. You
strike North Carolina, and you go nearly
one hundred miles. You go ninety miles
through the State before you take up your
people for Indiana. You take them froni"
the Second Congressional District of
North Carolina, as my colleague says,
witii nine tliousitiid Republican majority
in it. You have asked me the question,-,
and I ask you why they are leaving North
Carolina? Their own people say it is
wrong. Every leading white Republican
in North Carolina says that it is wrong.
The Republican member of Congress at
the other end of tlie Capitol, I repeat,
says it is wrong. The late Republican
member says it is wrong. Your District
Attorney says it is wrong. Your late
Governor says it is wrong; and without
exception, from the intelligent white and
black people of North Carolina, you hear
it said there is no cause for it. I ask you
for the cause, and then I ask you why
they go to Indiana aud not to some other
State ?
