The Volunteers’ Fair.
Tiie appeal issued by the Volunteers to
the ladies of the city a few days since
met with a hearty and ready response.
From all sides have been received prom
ises of assistance in the grand social Fair.
The yonng ladies have taken hold almost
en masse, and the success of the enter
prise is assured in advance. We heard
a gentleman offer yesterday $1,200 for the
receipts to be derived from the Fair, and
all its branches. This may seein a large
sum, but tlie Volunteers are determined
to run it up to $2,000, and liavc taken the
proper steps so to do.
It is desired that this entertainment
shall embrace every feature known to fair
givers, from tlie cheap grab-hag to the ex
citing raffle. Already many articles of
value have been tendered the company,
among which may be mentioned a bale of
cotton, a ton of coal, a $150 dinner set, a
$25 wax doll, etc. Correspondence has
lieen liegun with the Seventh Regiment
of Xew York, and it is likely that many
elegant presents, left over from tlie late
grand fair held in that city, will be trans
ferred to tlie Volunteers at a reasonable
figure.
Tlie meeting of the lady friends of the
Company called for last Wednesday, was
postponed until Tuesday next at eleven
o'clock. At that liour a committee from
tlie Volunteers will be present at the
Armory to receive tlie friends of tlie com
pany and to arrange with them a pro
gramme. Every lady in tlie city is re
quested to meet with them.

To-inorrow evening, at Ralston Hall,.
Mr. B. Maeauley will open a two nights’
engagement, playing -Uncle Daniel” in
the modem drama of “A Messenger from
Jarvis’ Section.” The play is to our thea
tre goers an entirely new one. The load
ing role is a creation of Mr. Maeauley,
which has won much commendation from
the press of the country. As presented
in Macon it will no doubt lie very enjoya
ble. The sale of scats yesterday gave in-
dication of a good audience. Macon has
not had any great amount of amusement
tills season; and a novelty, such as the
play to-morrow evening, presented by a
good company, will no doubt he apprecia
ted by our people, ’flic Chicago Times,
of October 21st, says:
“At Haverly’s Mr. B. Macauley’s
drama: “A Messenger from Jarvis’ Sec
tion,” will lie remembered as having been
played at this theatre about a year
ago. It is of tlie modem sort ami of the
very best of its kind, and no time or la
bor is wasted anywhere in the play from
beginning to end. Every bit of business
leads up to something else. Tlie story is
kept continuously in view, and the inter
est and attention of the audience is never
allowed to lag. Uncle Dan’l is an hon
est, shrewd and kindly old fellow, with
whom the sympathy of the spectators
goes in all his moods and scrapes. Tlie
assumption of this part by Mr. Maeauley
is quite worthy so excellent an actor. It
is clear characterization, no more over
strained than tlie somewhat high pressure
of its surroundings compel. Mr. Macau-
icy’s social play is remarkably good;
quite frequenty lie incites a roar or a
round of applause by the mere change of
countenance.”
Jierlou* Accident.
Wednesday evening, while hunting
■ear Griswoldville. Boas Grier, son of
Cat E. C. Grier, aeddentaly shot himself
through the foot with a breechloading
gun. It aeems, the young man had placed
in tbs gun and finding the
i hard to dose, rested the muzzle on
his foot. While the gun was in this posi
tion. the pressure upon the cartridges fired
one of them and the entire load of shot
passed through his loot into the ground.
1 was in the shape of a
of the gun barrel,
! in passing through, carried
away bone and flesh. Dr. Mettauer was
summoned at once and went down to
the wound, which though serious is
not necessarily dangerous. We trust that
the yonng man will soon be out.
t City Bond*.
Tlie city bonds for funding the debt of
the city seem to be taking a long time to
put in an appearance. The Funding Com
mission expect them daily. There is
no reason, under the existing arrange
ment, why tlie bonds should not be soon
taken up. The composition of the Com
mission inspires the confidence of tlie
community generally, and will inspire
confidence abroad. They will see that
the provisions of the act creating the Board
are faithfully carried out. When the
bonded debt of the city is gotten into
proper shape, then will Macon's forward
movement on the high road of prosperity
he materially accelerated.
The citizens of Macon have every rea
son to be proud of their growing and pros
perous city, and to feel well pleased with
the outlook in the future.
BREVITIES.
—On Friday there was a large gather*
lng of children at the residence of Cap
tain J. C. Wheeler to enjoy a Christmas
festival. The occasion was a very pleas
ant one.
Candidates for the county offices are
beginning to be heard from although the
election is about a yearoff.
—The large three story establishment
near the corner of Second and Poplar
streets, being erected for Messrs. Collins
A Winn, is rapidly approaching comple
tion. Besides being a very handsome ad
dition to the street, tt will expand and
open up another industry in Macon—tlie
manufacture of wagons, buggies and car
riages. • - .
—Tlie Uplands Hotel, of Eastman,
opens on the 1st of January. A very
large patronage from the North is expect
ed this season and the Messrs. Schofield
will no doubt make the hotel more popu
lar than ever before. The Florida travel
this season has until recently been quite
light, but has now set in steadily, and the
trains bound to the Southeast go out well
filled with passengers. * -
—Judge Simmons will announce his de
cision in the Southwestern Railroad case
to-morrow morning.
—We call the attention of the trade to
twenty cases of prints just received, at less
than New York price. Orders for these,
received early, will receive prompt atten
tion. S. Waxelbaum & Bbo.
—Tlie North Georgia Conference of the
A. 31. E. Chinch will meet in Cotton Ave
nue Church, of this city, January 7th,
1880. Bishop J. P. Campbell, D.D., will
preside.
Pleasant Entertainment.
One of the most pleasing incidents of
the Macon Christmas festivities wa3 a de
lightful little gathering of the infant class
of the First Baptist Sunday-school, at tho
residence of their teacher, Mr. J. C.
Wheeler. They began to assemble before
dark, notwithstanding the rain, and soon
filled the comfortable parlor, where they
passed a merry, merry time under the
care of their kind and though tful host and
hostess. In the back parlor was a table
so decorated as to appear like a beautiful
sylvan scene, with a lake surrounded by
green banks, upon which children
sported.
There were rocks and steps of marble,
and real grass and ferns and moss, from
the woods, all artistically arranged, form
ing a picturesque and beautiful scene.
The light surface of the glassy lake was
rippled by miniature ducks and swans,
and upon a log reposed several sleeping
turtles, all appearing as natural as life.
The green sward around tlie lake was
covered with apples and oranges, enough
to give one of each to every single one of
tlie sixty hoys and girls in the class.
Above tlie lake were two tall ladders sup
porting each other, upon which were an
almost, endless variety of “Christmas
gifts” for the little ones—all numbered to
correspond with tlie number of tlie tick
et which each little one drew from a box.
Tlie whole was illuminated by a great
number of little wax candles, and several
transparencies with inscriptions, added to
tlie variety and interest of tlie scene, and
imprinting upon many infantile minds
pleasing associations in connection with
‘‘Jacob's Ladder.”
Taken altogether, it was a novel and
delightful, as weil as artistic, entertain
ment, and did credit to tlie head and heart
of Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler.

A day or two since the 3Iacon Volun
teers received from Savannah a hand
somely framed set of resolutions from the
Volunteer Guards Battalion. The fol
lowing is a copy of the resolutions. They
are printed on white satin, in elegant
style:
Ham. op tiie Savannah Volunteers
Guards Battalion.
Savannah, Ga.,Nov. 12, 1879.
It was the pleasure of a detachment of
this battalion to participate in the ceremo
nies incident to the unveiling of the Con
federate monument in Macon, Ga., on the
29th of October, and to he the re
cipients, on that day, of a cordial welcome
anil a munificent hospitality from their
brother soldiers, the 3Iacon Volunteers,
and also to receive, in addition to the
open-handed entertainment of their hosts
many courtesies from members of other
military organizations, and from citizens,
all of which contributed largely to the
pleasure of their visit, anil for which tlie
members of their battalion unite in ten
dering their most grateful acknowledge
ments.
While we do not desire to be invid
ious in our distinctions, yet we are con
strained to speak in terms of admiration
of the hospitality of the Macon Volun
teers. Their banquet, complete and su
perb in all of its appointments, was
adorned by those cheerful looks which
“crown a welcome” and make “every
dish a feast:” therefore he it
Besotted, That we hereby acknowledge
with grateful feelings the very cordial
maimer in which the detachment of this
battalion was received and entertained in
3Iacononthe 29th of October, ultimo,
and for kindness of treatment we particu
larly return our most sincere thanks to
each officer and member of the 3Iacon
Volunteers.
That it is the unanimous sentiment
of this battalion that the day may soon
come when wo will be afforded the pleas
ure and honor of receiving at our own
festive board the genial and gallant Vol
unteers of our beautifnl sister city of
Macon, and
That it was impossible not to recog
nize in the declaration of the banquet ta
bles and hall of our hosts, the deft hands
and exquisite taste of woman, whose
matchless virtues, were it in our power
we would “grave in paper more lasting
than monuments of marble.”
A true extract from the minutes.
W. W. Rogers, Secretary.
Handsome resolutions of thanks were
also received from'the Columbus Compa
ny, which visited our city at the same
time. __
