The PucENii Riflemen.—It gives us pleasure
to notice the ritpid resuscitation of this gallant
and time-honored corps. It seemed for a time
that it must inevitably pcri6h for want of a suf
ficient number of paradiog members. As soon
as necessity lor service makesjits appearance,
“Rcdl vivas’* its motto, it rises “Phoonix’Mikc
from the asl*es, and is once more full of vigor
and animation—“always ready” to go where
duty calls.! The corps numbering 60 men, will
parade at o’clock this afternoon, in a new

OBITUARY. .
‘The ways of Providence are mysterious, an«l past
finding out. Truly, the destinies of some men are
^Departed this life, «.n the morning of the 30th inst,
at Whitesville, in the county of Clay, m thei flfty-sec-
ond year of his age. Major LEWIS C. GAINLS, form
erly of the State of Alabama, but for the pa9t fourteen
years a resident of the State of Florida. Maj. Gaines
came to Florida in and »e.t ed in Marion county,
where he resided several years. He, there, by his
manly conduct, generous disposition and gentlemanly
deportment, won for himself many warm friends, and
many more acquaintances. From Marion county ha
removed to the town ot Welaka, on the St. Johns
River, wtere he remained some ten years ; lie, thus,
also gained the friendship of all who knew him.—
From Weluka he again removed to Clay County, where
he has since resided until the “Grim Monster” sum
moned him to the bar of his God. Painful, indeed,
will :t be to his friends, (and he has many) when they
hear of his sudden death. Major Gaines was elected
in this county a few days since, as a conservative del
egate to the State Convention, soon to assemble in
Tallahassee ; but, alas! was denied the privilege—the
boon of telling to the people of Florida bow dearly he
loved his adopted Stale.
Ho encomium Is necessary; no eulogy is requisite—
he died as he had lived—a good man. Those who knew
him best loved him most; and although he has been
with the people of Clay County but for a short time,
still, long will they cherish his memory.
He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his
loss; but the Omnific Power that called him hence,'
has promised to be a father to the latjierlcss, aud the
widows’ God, and He will see to it. The writer of this
article has known Major Lewis C. Gaines for the past
fourteen years, and he feels that he would be doing the
departed an injustice, did he not pay the last tribute to
his deceased friend. He hopes, also, that some of the
many Florida friends of the deceased, will do ample
justice to hia remains by giving him a passing notice,
especially the editors or publishers of newspapers, as
he once belonged to'that fraternity. No one deserves
it more than Major LewisO. Gaines.

From lVashington.
Washigton, Jan. 7,—In the Senate to-day, Mr. Crit
tenden’s resolutions being under consideration, Mr.
Crittenden made an imploring aud affecting speech.
Mr. Toombs followed in a long and the most ardent
secession speech ot the session. He ignored the idea
that Georgia would consent to compromise on the
northern construction of the constitutiou. He gave a
summary of the grievances complained of, and said if
the South was denied her rights, she would appeal to
the “God of battles.”
The Senate then weutinto Execuiivc session on the
nomination of Mr. McIntyre, for Collector of Charles
ton, which was referred to the usual committee,..
The House passed the Legislative-Execu.Yve appro

Border State compromise relations, bat it was ne
gatived.
Mr. Adrain, of JStifi Jersey, offered a resolution ap

which is still in session, has refused a resolution to re
consider a resolution, providing for the call of a Con
vention, ns reported from the Committee aud passed,
'he general sense of the members is that Virginia will
•esist any attempt by tho General Government to co-
irce a seceding State.
There ?s a strong manifestation of disapproval of

otite of Mirumon and Termination
of tlie War In Mexico.
New On leans, Jan. 7.—Advices from Mexico re-
•rt that Miram^n had been complety routed by the

stitutional army occupied the Capital on Christmas
[day.
Puebla had capitulated, aud Jaurez was to have
ne to the capital on the 3d instant. It is believed in

clnforcemcnts Nailed for Fort Sum
ter.
New York, Jun. 7.—The steamship Star of the West,
-rtered under orders from General Sco.t, has sailed
Charlestcm. She took out a full supply of provi-
ilons and 25ffmcn for Major Anderson, at Fort Sum
er. The reinforcements are under command of Lieu-
:enant Bartlett, and the steamer will be due at
harleston to-morrow (Tuesday) afternoon.
EINFORCEMKNTS FOU FORT SUMTER.—Our
despatch announces the departure of the Star
of the West from New York, with provisions
and' reinforcements for Major Anderson, at Fort
^'Sufnter. The statement is positive, yet we arc
inclined to discredit it for its unreasonableness.
That a man of General Scott’s judgment, cau
tion and military information should commit
two hundred aud fifty men on board a merchant
steamer, to the mercy of the CharlestoA forts,
under whose guns she is obliged to land them,
is a story that we are unprepared to believe. It
would be sending them into the jaws of certain
destruction. We shall probably receive the
correction during the day.
A Good Citizen* Gone.—Under our obituary
head will be found recorded the death of Mr.
Stephen Clay King, of WjQ'ne county, at San
Antonio, Texas, where he was spending tie
winter with a portion of his family. Mr. King
was an estimable citizcu, a polished gentleman,
and esteemed second to none in all tho relations
of life. His family have our sincere sympathy
in their sudden and painful bereavement.

the only way i n which we can make you any acknowl

My little son, eleven years ol.l, has had S&rofula sores

enjoys perfect health, with no remnant of the disorder
about him that we can discover. If you, sir, are a pa

since, having heard the Oxygenated Bitters spoken ol

weeks after I would suffer no inconvenience from my
old enemy, when another attack would give occasion
for a small dose of the Bitters; and by the use of less
than one bottle, I find myself effectually cured.
I recommend it to alt Dyspeptics, with confidence,
