WEDX t r -SDAY MORNING, JANUARY 9,18C0.
Xlio Battle of New Orleans.
The anniversary of this event was duly cele
brated by the military of our city, yesterday.
All the companies were out, (except the 1
tillery whose ordnance is at the Fort) and pi
sented a most, spirited appearance. Great
7»*i< du corps has been infused into them by
cent political occurrences and the circumstan
ces pro wing out ot them ; all seem eager -to
show their metal on the field of actual Service
The Huzzars, Lieut. Gumming commanding,
appeared with full ranks, but retired early to
their parade ground, where, after the usual ex
ercises, they contended for a prize. Wc could
not learn the result.
The Guards and the Ogictkorpes united their
forces aud paraded under command of Lieut.
Basinger, of the former company.
The Republican Blues. Capt. Anderson, pa
raded in fatigue dress, knapsacks <fcc., and
looked more practical than any wc saw daring
the day.
Tho German Volunteers, with their fine music,
(the Chraleston Palmetto Band) and uniform
hearing, attracted no little attention. A ball in
the evening closed the exercise cf the day.
The Phoenix Riflemen, crown under their
present spirited cornu... **er, Capt. Geo. A Gor-
dou, appeared in their new ^.liguc uniform, in
the afternoon, to the number of some sixty
odd, officers and men. After the parade, they
repaired to their drill room, where an excellent
collation was spread, and the evening passed in
patriotic speeches, wit, sentiment, and song.
The DeKalb Riflemen, however, were the
sensation of the day. From a spiritless few,
this company, under the impulse given by their
new cammander, Capt. Wetter and his efficient
subalterns, has, within a few weeks, become one
ot the finest companies in the city. It was their
first apearance in public, and their proficiency,
for so young a company, was the admiration of
all. Their uniform consists of a blue frock,
with gilt buttons and epaulettes, pants
of the same material, and Prussian helmets
They number over seventy, and marched to the
excellent music of our German Band. At two
o’clock they sat down to a dinner giveu by their
Captain,at the drill room. This repast was above
eulogy, and its merits rose in the estimation of
all when they heard that it was the product of the
Captain’s domestic economy, and not of a pro
fessional caterer. We have never seen a better
tabic spread in the city.
We are pleased to add that the day passed off
most pleasautly to all, aud without accident of
any kind whatever.

Fort Pulaski, Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Editor Republican ;
There is little or nothing doing out of the
usual course of events transpiring in this gar
rison, and my letters arc consequently brief
aud, may be, uninteresting; but so mauy ot our
citizens arc here, it is necessary to say some
thing, if no more thau that all arc well.
The work of the fort goes on rapidly; the
guns are V-ing overhauled, and will soon be in
r. coudiiiL .i to do effectual service.
The Chalham Artillery have had au oiler from
a lady iu Savannah, whose husband is a mem-
her of the corps, to come down and act as nurse
if her services arc ucedecf. Her letter was read
iu the quarters last night, aud was received
with ttoe hearty cheers, and a letter of accept
ance rjc'vod to be writtcu her to that effect.—
Aucth';- lady sent us a splendid fruit cake, iced
over, 1 tbc .word “Secession” wrought iu
with sui_.li . .--till another, whose name is un
known. sent us a package of liut. There may
be similar instances of kindness towards the
other corps, but as I have no opportunity of
finding it out, I do not mention them.
ft is impossible to imagine a gaj’er and more
auimated scene than the fort is during the day
the men rapidly passing to and fro doing the
various duties assigned them; the labor is se
vere, and one would suppose that by night na
ture would claim her rest, but up to tatoo,
which is beaten at 9 o’clock at night, cTcry
quarter resounds with gay sounds and shouts
that comc.from many (hearts. The “Marsel-
latsc,” “ Dixie’s Land,’’ “ Mickey arc you
drunk,” “Rap Slap,” and other songs with
like euphonious namos, ring out upon the
night. But after tatoo all is still and silent as
death.
A schooner arrived lust night, having on
board a Very laigc ..quantity of powder, and it
is being put in the magazine to-day.
On Thursday there will be a relief sent down,
and such soldiers as arc compelled to go home
will return. There are 20 from the Chatham
Artillery who will return, and their places will
be filled from town.
If anything ol importance occurs, I will try
itnd advise you. Very truly,
Barraae.
P. S.—I learu by letters from town to-day,
•.hat some consternation has been produced by
the construction of Commandant Bartow’s or.
der in regard to any one found asleep on his
post. The order simply staled that the exigen
tries of the times required that strict military
discipline should be’observed, aud the penalty
ot being caught asleep, was death by the arti
cles of war, but none of us anticipate the exe
cution of such an order ; in fact the men are so
alert at every duty, that it will never be de
served. B.

TO HORSE DEALERS
Sweet’s Infallible Liniment for Horses is
unrivalled by any, and in all cases of lame
ness, arising from sprains, biuises or wrenching, its
effect is magical and certain. Harness or saddle galls
scratches, mange, Ac., it will also cure speedily. Spavin
ana ringbone may be easily prevented and cured in
their incipient stages, but confirmed cases are beyond
the possibility of a radical cure. r«o case of the kind,
however, is so desperate or hopeless but it may be alle
viated by this liniment, and its fhithftil application will
always remove the lameness, and enable the horse
travel with comparative ease.
Every horse owner should have this remedy at hand
for its timely use at the first appearance of lamenes
will effectually prevent those formidable diseases men
tioned, to which all horses are liable, and which render
so many otherwise valuable horses nearly worthless.

Tlie result of the late election, for President of the
United States, devolopes the tact, that there is a party
in power who aie seeking control of our consciences,
and the destruction of our property. Tlie events that
are being developed, however, show that the Southern
States wiU not submit to be ruled by such a power.—
These political difficulties indicate a change in our
Commercial relations with the Northern States, from
whence onr supplies have been mostly received, and a
return to a more legitimat • and direct trade. To those
who desire to promote this legitimate and direct trade,
if there are any such, and they are at a loss as to how
to accomplish this object, I will say to them that I will
receive Cotton destined for foreign markets; will
when desired, advance one half the value of the cot
ton, at the port of embarkation; will have the cotton
shipped to Liverpool, if not otherwise directed, and
sold. The proceeds«-f sale returned in gold and such
articles of produce as the planter may require. For all
advances, interest will be charged at seven percent—
Charges on the other Bide, the usual commission for
selling cotton and purchasing supplies.
Without conference, I refer to the following gentle
men:
Hon. E. A. Nisbet, Macon.
W. R. Phillips, Griffin.
W. J. Anderson, Fort Valley.
Jno. V. Price, Americas.
Nelson Tift, Albany. w
Jas. It. Redd, Columbus.

Ed. Houston, Tallahassee, Fla.
J. P. Sanderson, Jacksonville, Fla.

The Proprietor, aud Lady, are South Carolinians by
birth and early raising, Georgians by education and
marriage, and Texans by a residence of nine years, in
that, of all others, the most beautiful State South. We
have been in public life 14 years: seen much, travelled
much, and know full well the wants of many travellers,
and are prepared to supply them in a neat and prompt
manner.
We have a sufficient corps of servants to give every

We respectfully solicit the patronage of tlie stage and
