1 corn Ys'ochington, stating that the Government
had deiermined to reinforce the forts, at nil
hazard?.
Shad.—We had begun to think that shad sea
son would give us the dodge entirely this win
ter, when we were forcibly, and most accept
ably, reminded of our mistake yesterday, by
Mr. Andrew Flatley, who sent us for dinner as
fine A Shad as ever finds its way into our waters.
Many thanks to Mr. Flatley for his present, and
that others may enjoy a similar luxury, we
would state, for the public information, here
and elsewhere, that he is ready to fill all orders
for that excellent fish, at his store on the Mar
ket dock.
The Cecile.’*—This steamer, it will be
seen, has suspended her trips between Charles
ton, Savannah and Florida, for the present.
The “Pulaski Guards.”—This nqw com
pany had their first drill, at their Armory, last
evening. There was a good attendance, and
the occasion wa9jduly celebrated over a glass of
most excellent champagne. Though not pres
ent, we acknowledge a full share of both the
canrtesics and the good things of the occasion,
gnccess to the Pulaski Guards. !

From Washington.
Washington, Jan. 11.—In the Senate, to-day Mr.
Hunter’s resolution to retrocede to certain seceding
States the fortifications, arseuals and other Federal
properly thcre ; n. was taken up and considered.
Mr. Jfunl'-r addressed the Senate in support of the fa duly
resolution. He said there was no hop© of preserving
the present Union. The only resort now was a recon
struction of the government. He favored a dual Ex'
ecu live, cud suggested certain reforms in the Execu
tive department and in the Supreme Court. The co
ercion of seceding States by the Federal Government,
he said, was neither proper nor possible. If the Gov
ernment did not intend to coerce, the forts and arse
nals were of no use to it; if it did intend to coerce,
self preservation required the States to take such prop
erty out of the Government’s hands.
Mr. Hunter concluded his remarks by appealing for
a continuance of peace. The Senate then went into
Executive session.
Tho House spent the day on private bills,
Hon. Mr. Thomas, Secretary of the Treasury, has re
signed, and Mr. Dix, of New York, has been appointed
and confirmed in hfa stead.
The Government has withdrawn its patronage from
the Constitution newspaper, it is supposed, on account
of its recent article on Secretary HolL
Lieut. Talbot, of Fort Sumter. Is reported to have

Ten Broeck Course.
The course, yesterday, was in admirable con
dition : the recent rains and subsequent fine
weather having made it firm and free of dust.-
The day was beautiful, the sun just warm
enough to be comfortable, and the breeze not
too free or cbill to be unpleasant. The attend
ance was not so lar^c as the admirable arrange
ments and careful management deserved, but it
was quite good, notwithstanding, and a larger
number of ladies were present than usual—
showing that they appreciate the effort made
to avoid everything that can offend them in the
slightest particular.
The following are the entries :
First Race.—Colt Stake for three year olds. Two
mile heals—three hundred ($800) dollars entrance—
one hundred ($100) dollars forfeit, to which the Club

Only three horses appeared at the sound of
the bugle, as follow? : Sucker, Beccy B and Joe
Lane. Sucker was the favorite, yet many had
confidence iti Joe Lane, notwithstanding his pre
vious effort was not satisfactory. In the first
heat a good start wa e made, with Sucker in the
lead, which ho kept, though Joe Lane made a
hard push to overtake him as they were coming
home, Beccy 5 just saving her distance. In the
second heat the start was excellent, with Sucker
iu tho lead, and a great favorite, five to one
being beton him. They left the judges’ stand
as nearly even as it is possible to get them, and
the heat throughout was exciting. Beccy B.
made no effort to win, bat trailed behind, saving
her distance by about a neck. The contest was
bet ween <Sucker and Joe Lane, and the efforts of
the latter at times were tremendous, but un
availing. they came U P l ^ c la6i quarter, Joe
Lane's rider gave him whip and spur, but no

AYER’S COMPOUND EXTRACT SAR
SAPARILLA.
No one remedy is more needed in this country than
a reliable alterative, but the sick have been so outra
geously cheated by the worthless preparations of ftar-
sapanlla abroad, that they aredisgus ed even with the
name. Yet the drug cannot be blamed for the impo
sitions from which they have suffered. Most of the so
called Sarsaparilla in market contain iitiJe of the vir
tues of Sarsaparilla or anything else. They are mere
slops,—inert and worthless, while a concentrated ex
tract of the active variety of Sarsaparilla compounded
wi th Dock, Stillingia, Iodine, etc., fa, as it ever will
be,a powerful alterative und an effectual remedy.—
Such is Ayer’s Extract of Sarsaparilla, as its truly won
derful cures of tlie great variety or complaints which
require an alterative medicine, have abundantly shown.
Do not, therefore, discard this invaluable medicine,
because you have been imposed upon by something
pretending to be Sarsaparilla, w hile it w is not When
you you have used Ayer’e—then, and not (ill then,, will
you know the virtues of Saieaparilla. For minute par
