TUESDAY" MORNING, JANUARY 22, 1861.
A New Arm.-—The inventive spirit of the
age is no where more strikingly developed than
in many ingenious instruments for taking or
defending human life. Colt and Allan,- it was
thought, had reached the ultimatum in their im
provement of fire arms, and especially pocket
pistols, but Mr. J. P. Lindsay, who made us a
visit yesterday, has left in our office a repeat
ing pistol, of his own Infention, and called
“Young America,” which excels any thing we
have seen in that line. It has five chambers in
the cylinder, each of which admits two charges,
to which the lire is communicated through a
double set of tubes, thus enabling it
to fire ten successive shots in -an almost
inconceivably short space of time. Thre are,
of course, two hammers, answering to the
^double set of caps.
The pistol is both ingenious and effective as
a weapon, and wc commend it, more especially
to oar military companies, who arc in need of
small arras. They are 9f various sizes, ten and
twelve shooters, and adapted to either the
pocket or the belt.
Mr. Lindsay has been spending Borne time in
Charleston, where he sold a large nnmber to
the military and citizens generally.
The Norfolk papers announce the arrival, at
that port, of the revenue cutter J. C. Dobbin,
which wsis seized in Georgia but rescued by
Governor Brown. s
Lieutenant R. J. Chapman, of the Brooklyn,
has again tendered his resignatton, and comes
South. /
It is stated thafthc authorities at Washington
will soon put the test to all the Government
employees at Washington, and those who will
not make oath to support the Union and the
Constitution, in all their integrity, will be re
moved without further words.
Another Atlantic Telegraph.—The Bull
etin des Lois, a Paris journal, publishes a de
cree, signed by the Emperor, ^approviug of
a convention between the Minister of the Inte
rior and Messrs. Bower, Trotter and Curtis, for
laying down a submarine telegraph between
France and the United States. This will be the
third hi < fiitcmplation. The two others are the
old Atlantic Telegraph, from Valcutia (Ireland)
to Newfoundland, and that from the Faroe
Islands, via Iceland and Greenland.
Enterprise.—Telegraph wires from the re
porting galleries of the Lords and Commons aic
to be laid down to the offices of the different
London newspapers.
lYV If S COMPOUND EXTRACT SAR
SAPARILLA.
No one remedy is more needed in this country than
^reliable alterative, but the sick have l>een so outra
geously cheated by the worthless preparations of Sar
saparilla abroad, that they are disgus ed even with the
name. Yet the drug cannot be blamed for the impo
sitions from which they have suffered. Most of the so
called Sarsaparilla in market contain little of the vir-.
tues of Sarsaparilla or anything else. They aro mere
slops,~inert and worthless, while a concentrated ex
tract of the active variety of Sarsaparilla compounded
Wi lh Dock, Stilllngia, Iodine, etc., is, as it everjvill
be,a ptjwcrful alterative and an effectual remedy.—
Such Is Ayer’s RxtracWof Sarsaparilla, as its truly won

disposition to Consumption, Ac.
This great remedy is too well known, and is per
forming too muA good to make it necessary' to go into
an elaborate discussion of its merits. Suffice it to say
that it still maintains Its supremacy in curing diseases
of the most obstinate character, and that all who suf-

remedy, seldom have occasion to resort to other ap
pliances to insure a perfect restoration to health.

Messrs Setii W. Fowlk & Co_,—
Gents I hereby certiij that I have bein troubled
for several years with a difficulty of the heart and
lungs, mid have applied to several physicians for help,
and have tried almost every remedy of the numerous
ono6 which have been recommended without receiving
any assistance; but had been growing weaker and
weaker, until, hearing of Wistar’s Balsam ot Wild
Cherry about a year since, I commenced using it with
immediate relief. It has not only restored my lungs to
u sound Btate, but l am entirely relieved of the diffi
culty or disease of the heart 1 have no hesitation in
saying that it is the best lung medicine before the pub
lic. and I most cheerfully and conscientiously recom
mend it to all persons suffering with pulmonary com
plaints. H. L. GILMAN.

Messrs. Seth W. Fowls *fc Co. :
Dear Sirs:—Having used Dr. Wistar’s Balsam of
Wild Cherry for about fifteen years, and having real
ized its beneficial results hi my family, it affords me
great pleasure in recommending it to the public as a
valuable remedy in cases of weak longs, colde, coughs,
d&c., and ap-tuedy which I consider to be entirely in
nocent, and may be taken with perfect eafety by the
most delicate in health.

BLOOD FOOD! BLOOD FOOD !
Are you despairing V Have you tried other remedies
and failed ? Do you classify Dr. Bronson’s Blood Food
with other patent medicines ? Listen ! •
It would be impossible to let you know of the Blood
Food without resorting to advertising. Now, that
quacks resort to the same xnetuod to acquaint you wi*h
their patent medicine*, does not make this preparation
the same style of article at all as theirs. Dr. Bronson
is a teacher in our medical colleges, and a very cele
brated lecturer on physiology ; and his preparations—
not patent medicines—arc the result of an old physi
cian’s great experience and knowledge. Then do not
despair. Though you have tried other remedies and
failed, try this and you will surely be cured. Con

Georgia State Convention.
MrLUtDGEViLLE, Jan. 21.—The Convention, to-day,
adopted, unanimously, th« following preamble and res
olutions, which were written by Hon. A. H. Stephens
and Judge Union .‘Stephens, and offered by Judge
Nlsbet:
Whereas, the lack or unanimity in the action of this
Convention in the passage of the Ordinance of Seees
sion, indicates a difference of opinion among the mem
ber* of the Convention, not so much as to the rights
which Georgia claims, ;or the wrongs of which she
complains, as, to the remedy and its application before
a resort to other mean* of redress—
_And, whereas, it Is desirable to give expression to
that intention which really exiets among all the mem
bers of the Convention, to eustain the State in the
course of action which she Las pronounced to be proper
for the occasion; therefore,
Resolved, That all the members of the Convention,
including those who voted against the Ordinance as
well as those who voted tor it, wilt sign the same, as a
pledge of the unanimous determination of this Conven
tion to sustain and defend the btate in this her coarse
of remedy, with all its responsibilities and conse
quences, without regard to individual approval or dis
approval of Us adoption.

Letter from Colvin Damon, Haverhill, Max*.
Haverhill, .Mash , Sept. 22, 1559.
Gentlemen : I consider the effect of the Peruvian
Syrup not more remarkable in my own case than in
that of my wife. Several years since she began to ex
perience occasional turns of what we at first regarded
the common sick-headache. hose increased upon her
both in severity and frequency. She followed the pref
er ptioES of excellent physicians, all to no purpose, and
was dually assured by her medical attendunl that her
ease Was not such as common!jrpasses under the name
of stoic-headache, but a sickness resulting rather from
weakness. She would have a premonition of her sick
ness in a dimness of sight, wiih floating specks before
her eyes, followed soon by a severe pair in the head,
and then nausea and vomiting of the most distressing
nature. These turns would last from twelve to twen
ty-four hours, and were very prostrating in »he!f ef
fects. For the last few years they were almost inevi
tably induced by over-exertion, or excitement from
any cause, however slight, even such as were conse
quent upon making and receiving cubs. -
She resolved on a trial of the Peruvian Syrup It
accomplished what no other medicine has had power
to do. It stayed her sickness, and from that hour to
this, numbering several months, in the course of which
she has passed through a hundred experiences that
would previously have induced her distressing sickness,
she has not felt the slightest intimation of its approach
Very gratefully yours,
