A Man Shoots his Wife.—Richard West, an
Irishman residing in RobertsYille, went home
while in liquor yesterday afternoon, and taking
down his gun, which was loaded with buck
shot, commenced flourishing it around. His
wife was standing at the window, when the gun
went off, whether accidently or designedly does
not appear, and the entire load was lodged in
her shoulder, wounding her very severely.—
West was arrested and committed to the lock
up to await a hearing.
Committed.—John Paget, charged with the
killing of Joseph Green, 3d March, was brought

Montgomery, May 3, 1861.
A very novel design for a seal of the Con
federate States was introduced into Congress
this morning by Mr. Ochiltree, of Texas. It
represented, first the Palmetto tree in the front
ground, as an emblem of that State which has
nobly plucked the laurel from the brow ol Vir
ginia, and decorated her historic wreaths with
tho leaves of the imperishable evergreen.—
Above the lambent leaves of the Palmetto,
fluttered the gallant eagle which bathed its plu
mage on the fields of Buena Vista, and was the
omen of success when followed by the sons of
Mississippi, led by the chivalrous Davis. The
Globe of Florida exposing upon Its surface the
wealth and variety of the earth was there, and
stood iu proud erection the Constitutional
columns of Georgia, the Empire Mother of so
many sons, who have caught in the breeze from
the North, the cries of Virginia appealing lor
help, and uever have heard them unanswered.
Alabama in a “map of busy life.” nud Louisiana
with tender parental care, nourishing and sus
taining her young, over whose heads hang the
balance of justice, arc both illumined by the
rays of the Lone Star. The whole is wrought
and blended into one beautiful picture, around
which the vine clusters to denote the strength
of compact and the power ot unity. The de
sign is highly creditable to the artist, and one
thing peculiarly fitting to tho object it was in
tended for, is that each and every State forming
the foundation for the new Republic, is tully
and umnistakeablv represented. There is no
combination of each interest, which loses its
own identity and falls into a species of national
stew, 6ucb as the present American flag denotes.
No consolidation is depicted, into which tie
constituent elements are oil resolved intii* 1
mass of conservatism, from which no with
drawal is possible. In a word, the design is
tilting for tho occasion. as it truly
reflects tho principles of State Equality upon
which our Confederacy has reposed its exis
tence.
In my mind (permit me to stick a pin here,
as the saying goes) the people of the North
have become demented upou a subject akin to
the present, the only difference being that it is
a flag instead of a seal. Were it the latter I
would attach no blame to them for adhering so
long to ic, but as it is a flag they disprove, to
some extent, the old saying of Charles Dickens,
that the “American flair would go whichever.!
way the wind goes.” It is the amalgamation
of interest, exhibited in the national emblem
that makes them so persistent in maintaining
unbroken tho links which have heretofore
boand us to the Union. In looking therefore
upon the flag, they aro accustomed to see the
country there reflected, and from the intensity
of their attachment and manifest destiuy they
have gone color-mad, a' disease, which, like
color-blindness, is fatal to inhabitants of cold
climes.
Congress has accepted the Invitation of Gov
ernor Moore, and changed the place of sessions
into the opposite apartment from that which it
formerly occupied. It will in future meet in tiie
Ilall of the House of Representatives, which pos
sesses great advantages over the Senate Cham
her in point of convenience and accommoda
tion. T4i© latter place was barely large enough
for the limited number of Congressmen, and
now, when we expect that number to be so
largely increased shortly, extra arrangements
have to be made.
Additional members are to be attached to the
Committee on Territories, and one thousand
extra copies of the Acts of Congress are to be
printed, by order of that body.
These actions, in addition to a report of the
engrossment of ycstcrdaj’’s acts and resolutons,
constituted the amount ol labor performed in
open session this morning.
We may soon expect to see the bill authoriz
ing Marque and Reprisal issued, as one of the
results of secret consultation, and perhaps a
declaration of war. The latter will, however,
de.peud much upou the issue presented in the
future, which the pregnan f and laboring pres
ent would indicate will be brought forth.—
What the provisions of the bill may contain,we
arc us yet unaware, but presume that it presents
but slight, if any, differences from like legal
instruments.
Nothing of any local importance, except a
report of the proceeds of the late charitable
concert, which netted the sum of one hundred
and thirty two dollars. Thanks te the generos
ity and pains-taking of the Manager, M. W.
Canning. Let his name be remembered, and,
reader, “Go, thou, and do likewise.”

Encampment of the Buena Vista Guards, t
May 5th, 1801. f
The citizeus of Sav.iHuah have kindly furnish
ed the Buena Vista Guards with a good supply
of excellent vegetables. The soldier’s life is
Indeed a routih one, and in no respect rougher
than in regard to the provisions on which they
have to subsist, and the manner in which they
are prepared by those who at home arc wholly
unaccustomed to take any part in the culinary
department. To relieve this hardship, the citi
zens of Savannah having supplied ns with the
aforesaid luxuries, we, with sincere gratitudo
aud unauiuious vote, pass the following resolu
tions:
1st, That we tender to all the citizens of Sa
vannah, through whose influence and by whose
subscription vegetables have been obtained for
oor company, our sincere and unfeigned
thanks.
2d, That these resoluloas be published in the
Savannah Republican, the Editor of which pa
per we learn, first moved in the matter.
[Communicated. ]
4£k. Editor :—We have “enough and to
spare,” of men and means.
There are men, a large number of men, in
this community, who, it is proper, should re
main at home : some to look after our wants,
others, simply because it is best; or, for any
other reason, it matters not what ; but, it is as
well for them to be ut home.
There arc, however, Sir, a large number of
soldiers here. Men accustomed to discipline,
who know their duty, have been trained to it,
and who wish the State of Georgia to benefit by
their long practice, in the “School of the
Soldier.” Of these, are the volunteers, now on
Tybce, and the battaiious of Savannah.
We propose to form a Georgia Hegbncu, for
immediate active service. This is our proposi
tion : To receive no company as a company.
Let the organizations remain ; but receive vol

T HE great celebrity and the increasing demand for

public of its superior qualities over any other prepara

from dandruff and other cutaneous diseases, causes
the ha.r to grow luxuriantly, and gives it a rich, soft,
glossy andJkOxible appearance, and also, where the hair
is loosening fend thining, it will give strength and vigor
to the roffis, and restore the growth to those parts
which have become bald, causing it to yield a fresh
