This has been, by far, the most quiet day

difficult to realize that we were in a state of

fired a ehot since Sunday. He Is, however,
hard at work-on^ Morris Island, throwing np
bis works, moaantfng'guss. and preparing gen
erally for the storm to come. A h%h wind
prevailed throughout the day, and It was to
rough outside that the fleet could give no re
sponse ts onr occasional salutations.
It appears to be generally conceded that, in
spite of onr Bring, the enemy has. succeeded in
tightening bis grasp on Morris Island,
said by those who come from there, I

ol their Fort Royal paper, the Yankee* teem
confident of success from their present -pera-
tloas. In fact, they speak of ths redact!
8umter and the Ml of Charleston ss
written down in the book of Tati, to be veri
fied the first moment they shall think proper
to exercise the power they have already ob
tained aver as. Their expectations, however
confident, are not always realized, and they
may yet find themselves disastrously mistaken.
They will, at least, have a rough and bloody
road to travel before they get here.
Gen. Taliaferro hoe not only sustained Us
high reputation, bnt won new laurels by
his gallant management of the defensive opera
tions ea the island. No General has had a
heav er task to perform since the beginning of
the war. What with hard work, sleepless
nights, broiling suns, drenching rains, and wa
ter that a famished horse would hesitate to
drink, it is an evidence of extraordinary dura
bility that he has held out there so long. He
has given his personal attention to every move
ment, shunned no danger, and besides instruct
ing the gunners in their dnty, often, in the
midst of action, loaded and fired With his own
hands. He is the- idol.of the troops, and has
inipired them, by hit example, with an enthu
•iasm and daring that would attempt anything
short of an Impossibility.
I find all onr sick and wonnded Georgians
doing well in the hospitals. It is unnecessary.
to particilarize, bnt friends may receive the
asanrtnee that they aro properly attended to.—
There are bnt one or two wonnded badly, and
they are in a fair way to recover. Private M.
C. F. Sykes, of the 32d Georgia; has quite a
severe wound in the leg, the ball having enter
ed about three inches above the knee and pass
ed ont about fonr Inches below It. He was
shcu srhilst kneeling in a riHe pit in front of
Eow Wagner.
Private Elbert Pa.tereon, of Lnmpkim cani
ty. Ga., bail* member of Lneas’ S. C. battalion,
lost hit right arm. It was amputated at the
elbow joint, and he was suffering considerably
when I saw him yesterday,
The sick are numerous, but the diseases con
fined chlely to intermittent and catarrhal fe
vers of a light type. Col. Harrison baa bees
qnite'Indieposed for some days at the Charlea-
ton Hotel, bnt ia doing well and will be able to
rejoin hie command in a day or two.
I lake an unexpected pleasure In saying that
Lient. Tapper la actually getting well ot hit
severe wound. He is considered out of danger.

Very Important from Mexico.
From the Eco del Cbmercio, of Vera Cruz, of
he first of July, received at tile Department
of State, we collect various intereatiag details
of the French operations ia Mexico up io that
date.
GeUa.Fo r ey Appeared before Puebla on the
16th ot March, and opened hia parallels on the
22d of that month.
Gen. Comonlort, who commanded the Mexi
can army in the field, attempted to relieve the
besieged garrison with a train of supplies and
munitions of war, but his forces were surprised
and routed on the morning of the Sth of May,
with the loss ol his best artillery, four flags,
the whole train, and from four to six thousand
in killed, wounded, prisoners, and deserters.
On the 16th of May, negotiations for capitu
lation commenced, and on the I7;h, General
Ortega surrendered. In the proclamation ot
Gen. Forey, he announces aa the fruits of this
capitulation 18,000 privates made prisoners, as
well as 26 general officers, 200 field officers, and
800 or 200 inferior officers, with 140 guns, &c.
Among the prisoners who had given their
paroles were Generals Gonzalez, Ortega, and
LUve y Prtdni, who escaped in violation of
their paroles and fled to Orizaba. Gen. Men-
dcz» and the otoer superior officers refused to
become parlies to such infamy. ,
The first news of the enrrender of Puebla
reached Mexico on the 19:h of May, when the
Government immediately decreed the expul
sion ot the French residents from the city.—
Some futile effortb were made to organize a de
lence, and,-on the 25th, about nine. thou:
pand persons were seized by force for recruits
for the army, but wer* released the same even
ing. as the Government had no arms to pnt in
their hands.
On the 29th of May, the Government aban
doned the city, the Congress was adjourned,
and the inhabitants left to themselves.
On the first of June, various public meetings
were held, and the population expressed iu
resolute purpose “to adhere to the new order
of things,” the meetings resolved themselves
into one central janu, presided over by Gener
al Qaila, and at five o’clock, in the afternoon,
‘ joyful peals of the bells from every steeple in
the city solemnized the adhesion of Mexico to
the French intervention,” and the inhabitants
decked by thousands to sign resolutions to that
©fleet, which wero dispatched to Puebla next
day by a committee, who presented them . to
General Forey.
On U»e5th of June,'T3trrCoir~RtfeT'eitere'i
the City of Mexico with adelacbnsent from the
French army, and occupied* the Palace. On
the morning of the 7th, Gen. Forey left Pue
bla, and on the same d*y> French division un
der Gen. Baziine entered the city of Mexico^ -
“ The InhabltanU now commenced prepare
rations to celebrate the solemn entry the
whole army. Different committees of ladies
and gentlemen had been sent to welcome the
General, asraell as Messrs. Almonte and Mar
quez On the morning of the 10th, the city
w&a dressed in gala habiliments; the allied flags
fi -a:ed over the public building*; tbe triumph
al arches were prepared, and the walls of the
houses were decorated with flags, curtains,
flowers and mottoes. The people swarmed in
from all quarter*, the bells were Tung, salutes
of cannon and rockets filled the air, and there
was rained down oxr the liberating army a
shower of wreath*. ~ -
The conquering General proceeded to the
Cathedral, accompanied by the whole proces
sion, and a solemn Te Deum was offered up in
gratitude for the success of hie arms.
General Forey haa issued an ad a r ess of warm
thank* lor this flattering reception, and for
several days waa occupied in receiving the ad
hesion ot different municipalities, including
that of Puebla, to the^resolutlons of the citi
zens of the CapltoL
Several decrees had- been issued by the Cam=
msnding General—one directing tbe seques
tration of the proparty of all who should take
up arms agriast tne intervention; a second, e»-
