Mischief-Makers.
Oh 1 could there in this world be found
Some little spot of happy land,
Whore village pleasures might go round
Without the village tattling ?
How doubly blest that place weuld he,
Where all might dwell in liberty
Of gossip’s endless prattling !
If such a spot-were really known,
Dame Peace might claim it as her own,
And in it she might fix her throne
Forever aud forever;
'l'heie like a queen might reign and live,
Where every one would soon forgive
The little slights they might receive,
And be ofiended never.
The mischief-makers that remove
Far from our hearts the warmth of love,
And lead us all to disapprove
vYhat gives another pleasure ;
Thev seem to take one’s part, but when
They’ve beard our case, unkindly then
They soon retail them all again,
Mixed with poisonous measure.
And they have such ft cunning way
Of telling tales. They say :
“Don’t mention what I say, I pray ;
I would uot tell another.”
Straight to their neighbor’s house they go,
Narrating everything they know.
And break the peace of high and low—
YVile, husband, friend and brother.
O ! that the mischief-making crew
Were all reduced to one or two
And they were painted red or blue !
That every one might know them ;
Then would the village soon forget
To rage and quarrel, fume and fret,
And fall into an angry pet
AVith things too much below them.
For it’s a sad, degrading part.
To make another’s bosom smart,
And plant a dagger in the heart #
Y\ r e ought to love and cherish ;
Theu let us ever-more be found
In quietness with all around,
While friendship, peace and joy alound,
And angry feelings perish.
Honorable Age.
But when white age and venerableTleath
Mow down the strength and life within their
limbs,
Drain out the blood and darken their clear eyes,
immortal honors is on them, baviDg past
Through splendid lile and death desirable
To the c’ear seat aud remote throne of souls.
Bands indiscoverable in the unheard-of west.
Round which the strong stream of a sacred sea
Rolls without wind forever, and the snow
There shows not her white wings and windy
feet,
Nor thunder nor swilt rain sailh anything.
Nor the run burns, but all things rest and
thrieve ;
And these, filled full of days, divine and dead,
Sages and singers fiery from the god,
And such as loved their land aud all things good,
Aud, best beloved of btst men, liberty,
Free lives and lips, free hands of men free-born,
And whosoever on earth was honorable
And whatsoever of all the ephemeral seed,
Live there a lile no liker to the gods
But nearer than their life of terrene days.
- Love thou such life and look for such a death.
[Atalanta in Calydon.
Living in New Orleans.
Hints to Travellers from tlic North.
The following hints from the New Orleans
Picayune will be interesting to merchants,
tourists or others whose business or
pleasure may take them to the chief city of the
South :
‘ A long residence in this city, through many
terrible epidemics and sickly seasons, has con
vinced us of one fact, which this is not an inap
propriate occasion to impress upon the minds of
those ol rur readers who have not had the same
expeiieuce. It is this : that if a man or woman,
who comes from any other climate or country
settles in this city be can maintain and pre
serve bis health, ms mental and physical health,
as well and as long here as in any other locality
of this contin%m, provided he observes certain
simple and practical rules of conduct and liv
ing.
• “Our proposition does not even exclude the
possibility or probability of a recurrence of the
epidem c which used to be the annual visitant
aud scourge of our city ; which we have good
reason to hope and believe, however, lias at last
been effectually banished or shut out from what
used to be a favorite scene of its devastating
operations.
‘ “The principle of our theory, so well proven
and tested by old residents, by which people
may have as good health, in the summer, as
elsewhere in the United States, is that of regu
lating our habits of life by approximating them
as nearly as possible to those of the natives of
tropical climes. The chief cause of ill-health
and broken constitutions here, is that our popu
lation is composed largely of emigrants from
northern climates, who bring their old habits
and tastes, and continue the same modes of
living aDd the same dietetic rules which they
observed with impunity in their native latitude.
This will inevitable produce disease, debility,
and enervation, which are often most unjustly
laid to the climate and locality of New Or
leans. YVhat may be eaten with comfort and
nourishment at the North is highly prejudicial
here.
This fact has been discovered, ere this, by one
of our friends, who boasted a few days ago of the
tine piece of corn beef and cabbage he had bad
for his dinner. The next day, however, his tone
had considerably changed. Had he been a new
settler he would havo made the bad repute of our
city be»r the burden of these unpleasant conse
quences; but, being an ancient denizen, he hon
estly acknowledged the curn (beef), and recorded
a vow against any repetition of the indulgence.
There is another friend of ours, a native of Scot
land, who cliDgs to the belief that thote is 10
other ‘tap’ which m ly be considered ‘a pardona
ble vanity/ in the Rev. Mr. Stiggins’ view of the
subject, hut Scotch whisky or Irish poteen. But
whenever he indulges in this national vanity he
suffers therefrom very grievously, and ascribes
such unpleasant effects entirely to this ‘villain
ous climate.’ ‘Corn beef and cabbage have
thing to do with the uncomfortable com
of partaking of them ! These are due to
mate of New Orleans, its heat, the moisture 6!
the atmosphere, the miasma of the swamps and
other local causes.’
“This is the great fallacy and delusion we now
protest against and denounce ap the real cause of
four fifths of the sickness complained of as aris
ing from the olimato and locality. People must
not live here as they have been accustomed to
live in Edinburg, in Hamburg, in Bo-ton and in
Detroit. They must approximate their style of
living to that of those raees and people who live
as long and healthy, who enjoy life as much as
we do, and who multiply as rapidly as even our
robust Anglo Saxons do in ‘our'Northern hives.’
We must take lessons from the Creo’es, from the
Italians, the Mexicans. Even the semi-civilized
Orient ils and Africans could give us a few valua
ble dietetic hints. We must moderate our appe
tites for meats, solid and fat meats, and take
them in smaller quantities, and in the subdued
forms of stews, soups, bouillis, ets. And for
drinks, next to that most wholesome and sanative
of fluids, cistern water, we must eschew alcoholic
preparations, and confine ourselves to sub acids,
or gentle stimulants, like claret, Santerne, Cataw
ba, etc. By implicitly observing these two die
tetic rules, and by a temperate and even a liberal
indulgence in ripe and wholesome fruit, and fresh
vegetables, and an abundance of sleep, and a
regularity in all his habits, we believe that any
man whose mental condition is favorable, who is
not harassed by cares and troubles, which wo ad
mit do prey heavily upon the physical system
here as well as anywhere else, can eDjoy as good
health in the summer in New Orleans as in any
other large city on this continent.”

MR. RAND’S SPECIFIC is exhibited in the form at

associate the idea of operations upon the bowels from
taking any kind of pills. The Sesoisio of Dr. R»nd is
not intended as an xvxmiATiNo mkoioinf.. Its medici

regenerative organs. The pills are not unpleasant to
the taste, and many ]arsons masticate them with im

always recommend, as affording the speediest way to
get the effect of the remedy.
