SAVANNA*! DAILY REPUBLICAN. SATURDAY MORNING. SEPTEMBER. 331 J865.
The September 1'aihlrat.
This is the fashion-making month of alL Onr
modists are preparing their hew styles ami
shapes, and many novelties for the great
“openings,” or exhibitions, that will take place
before the beginning of October. The season
is not, however, far enough advanced to warrant
an exact judgment in regard to the styles;
though some evidence exists concerning the
modes that are to prevail, and some of the im
porters and inventors of fashion—Demorest
among the number—have on exhibition their
leading , designs for ladies’ dresses, jackets,
waists, cloaks, basques, bonnets, etc.
There are no important changes in the shapes
of the skirts. The tendency is still to expan
sion. The followers of the fashion will not be
able this fall to diminish anything. Their
dresses, though very full before, must, if possi
ble, contain yet more material, ibe quality
of the goods, too, must be fully maintained.
More trimming and more ornaments are to be
worn. Men and women who believe very
properly and naturally, that this is the time to
curtail rather than to increase expenses, will
find themselves disappointed aDd their theories
set at naught by these magnificent and in some
respects gaudy displays that are preparing.
Even gilt and tinsil are to be extensively em
ployed to heighten the effect of rich attire.
The reign of unpretentious steel—never very
complete or thorough—is entirely gone ; and
the absence of metallic currency will doubtless
tend to increase the use of the precious metals
in various forms and kinds of ornamentations.
A rekf to the eye which sees beanty in plain
ness will be found, however, in the “self-colors”
that will be preferred as the basis of the pre
vailing styles of adornment. A carious feature
of the fashions this season is the prospective
change in the “waterfall.” This novel inven
tion, which has been so much ridiculed, and has
at the same time been so inexplicably popular
among the ladies, though it never found any
prominent defenders, is to some extent going
out of use—that is, a part of tlie waterfall will
be omitted. The reason for this change is as
incoinprebensible as the reason for the adop
tion of the singular mode of dressing and dis
playing hair; but as nearly as can be ascer
tained the public are indebted to a new style
of bonnet, which cannot be worn with a great
waterfall, for the reform that is almost certain,
to take place. The new bonnet came from
Paris.
It Is but just to say that the Paris fashions
do not rule here to such an extent as many
persons suppose. The styles come from
France, but are so Americanized here as to
suit the refined taste of our less gay' and mat
ter of fact people. Indeed, many of the styles
most fashionable here are from designs of our
own, which display much inventive genius and
good taste. The following is an account of
some pattern designs now on exhibition:
Dresses.
The Gabriel dress—the skirt gored and with
out plaits, trimmed with tinsel cord and velvet
sets—is something unique and handsome.—
Another skirt, which is pretty, is trimmed with
double-fold, - put on in alternate squares and
points (squares at the bottom,) and between
the points the fold is formed in diamonds,
leaving a vacant square, with a strip of velvet
crossing it perpendicularly, the side corners
of the diamond finished with . tassels. The
waist of this dress is cut away in front for a
while vest; the back a jacket. Another pat
tern of waist is a spencer, made of velvet, or
of the same material as the dress, to be worn
over a white waist, with lappets, and trimmed
with black and gilt.
But a decided novelty is a jacket called the
“Lucille,” with a deep lappet on the back, a
smaller one overlaping this, a short lappet in
front, the sleeve closely fitting at the hand and
very full at the top, a cap cut in points and ex
tending from the side formed to three inches
on the front, trimmed with velvet, ornamented
with gold hauls in tasteful pattern, and gold
buttons.
Sleeves.
The small sleeves still hold their sway, but
there is a variety of patterns to suit ail per
sons, many of the styles having a fine effect.
Some are closely fitting at the hand ; some are
cut in fancy form, not adhering to the straight
line. But two or three patterns deserve par
ticular mention as new and tasteful.
The Lola sleeve is cat in one piece, so ar
ranged as to be fully over the elbow, sur-.
mounted by a cap and cuff, trimmed with tin
sel fringes, each point finished with two tas-
•els.
The Khoda sleeve, cut in two pieces, is
plain under the arm, the upper side of the
sleeve being full at the lower part and plain at
the upper, and running down in a deep point
to within four inches of the hand. It is trim
med around with guipure lace and cord, with
double tassels just above the elbows and at the
points. The sleeve is loose enough to pass
over the hand. It may be trimmed with lace
to be worn without undersleeves.
The Coralfo sleeve is in one piece, plated in
at the shoulder and a little above the elbow,
and is held down by three velvet straps, fas
tened with gold buttons with three correspond
ing straps at the cuff, also fastened with gold
buttons.
An elegant dress of Humboldt purple moire
antique, pointed waist, with white point< ap
plique lace, fthite and steel bugles, and crystal
buttons mounted with gilt—the skirt plain and
gored.
Cloaks.
There is considerable change in the style of
cloaks that will to used th? Oomiug season. The
most of these garments will be worn full in the
back, though some will be plain. Two of the
new patterns are particularly noticeable The
Escnriel, a circular, cut with a yoke at the baok;
the ekirt it three box plaits, a small ronnd cape
covering the yoke and terminating in a rounded
tab at the back; this, when made in corded silk, is
trimmed with silk braid, stitohed on in diamonds
•nd guipure lace.
The Euphrasine, a basqoine with two single
and one box plait in the back. The skirt is cat
separate, the back and side pieces forming a so-t
of wing over the skirt, the front sharply rounded
up from the side seam,.making it qaito short, the
eleave cnt in two pieces, the back with one plait
at the elbow, the edge and the wing trimmed with
heavy cable cord epaulet-', and on the back with
cord and doable tassel,
Bonnets.
A few French bon Det> are on exhibition, bat
-there is no great change from last season, except
they are made lower in the neck; leaving less
room for waterfads, which are waning. A very
pretty bonnet is trimmed with daises, and a ham
ming bird is placed among the down of ostrich
feathers. Gilt ornaments are mnoh used, some
of the designs representing ooius, so that if a lady
Cannot have gold dollars in her parse, she can at
least bear their semblance abont her.—N. T.

BLACKWOOD’S EDINURGH MAGAZINE (Tory.) .
The American publishers continue to reprint tho
above named periodicals, but as the cost of printing
has dsnblcd, and the price of paper nearly trebled»tbey
are compelled to advance their rates as follows .'
Terms for 1865.
For any one of the Reviews $4 Ifcr annum
For any two of the Reviews 7 per annum
For any three of the Reviews 10 per nnnnm
For all four of the Reviews..,. 12 per annum
For Blackwood’s Magazine 4 per annum

For Blackwood and threeof the Beviews.13 per annnm
For Blackwood and the four Reviews.. .15 per annum
The works will be printed on a greatly Improved
quality of paper, and while nearly all American Periodi
cals are either advanced in price or reduced In size—and
very generally both—we shall continue to give faith
ful copies of all the matter contained In the original
editions. Hence, onr present prices will be found as
cheap, for the amount of matter furnished, as those of
any of the competing Periodicals in this country.
i ompared with the cost of the original editions
which at the present premiums on gold would be abont
$100 a year, our prices (16) are exceedingly low. Add
to this the fact that we make onr annual payments to
the British Publishers for early sheets and copyright in
Gold—$1 costing ns at this time nearly $2 60 in cur
rency—and we trust that in the scale we have adopted
we shall be entirely justified by our subscribers aud the
reading public.
The interest of these Periodicals to American read
ers is rather increased than diminished by the articles
they contain on our great Civil War, and though some
times tinged with prejudice, they may still, considering
their great ability and the different standpoints from
which they are written, be read and studied with ad
vantage by the people of this country of every creed
and party.
