Attempted Suicide, .-y
Sergeant William Robinson, Company G, 103d
• - 0 T., attempted to commit subside last eve-
j,. about •> o’clock, on Charlton street, byshoot-
toghimself with a pistol, inflioting a very dan-
r , lUS if not mortal wound.
‘l! appears that the sergeant fell in Idve apd
n.urted a colored damsel named Charlotte, and
tb/ al | arrangements had, been made to have the
mirnago duly celebrated, but that the said Char
ge look a soeond notion aad refused to marry
Tec a" 1 Kobioson, and that he threatened to
( Uiu.it suicide, which ho attempted to carry out
. ubovo. Ho now lies in a critical situa-

Serious Affray. -1 .
Alexander llardee, a colored man, who has
heretofore borne a good reputation, got into
a dispute with a white man on Saturday night,
which «<>on came to blows. Several parties
l„,. a „,e mixed up in the fight, which seemed a
fro one, when llardee received a blow from
h niiio heavy weapon on the head, fracturing
hi-seuli. lie was taken to the Guard House,
and Capt. Aiken seeing the severity of his
wound, sent for a physician and had the wound
dressed, and at the advice of the physician lie
was conveyed to his residence. His wound is
a -cvere one, hut it is believed will not prove
latal. The case will, we learn, be investiga
t'd this morning.
New Importation—East India Kice.
Among the receipts of merchandise by a late
steam* r Irorn New York, we noticed one hundred
and fifty barrels uf Hast India rice, wbioh was
received in this city by Messrs. Robert Habersham
.( Sons, and sold readily by them at 10 cents per
pound. This is oertainly a new feature in our mar-
A*-t, and shows the course of trade. Heretofore rice
was shipped from this port in large quantities, but
luring the past four years the exports have been
very small, and since the opening of thapojrt but
little, if any, has left Savannah.
There is no comparison between this article and
die Carolina and Georgia rice, the grains of the
f. rmer being small and the quality ordinary, and
rambles our second class or middling riee.
This is virtually “carrying coals to Newcastle,”
and is an evidence of the desolating effeots of the
late uiiortunate war.

very genernlly both—we shall continue to give laith-
fnl copies of all the matter contained in the original
etfitions. Hence, our present prices will be found as
cheap, for the amount of matter furnished, as those of
any of the competing Periodicals in this country.
Compared with ths cost of the original editions
which at the present premiums on gold would be about
$100 a year, our prices (15) are exceedingly low. Add
to this the fact that we make our annual payments to
the British Publishers for early sheets and copyright in
Gold—$1 costing us at this time nearly $2 50 1n cur

wp shall J>c entirely justified by our subscriIters and the
reading pubttc.
Theintdrest of these Periodicals to American read
ers is rather increased than diminished by the articles
they contain on onr great Civil War, and though some
times tinged with prejudice, they may still considering
their great ability and the different standpoints from
■which they aka written, be read and studied with ad
