Wholesale An e it of Col
ored Persons.
A4rlc« tm Freedman.
We learn that on Tuesday night a so
cial party or ball, whjro was given at La
mar Hall by some respectable colored
people, was suddenly broken up by the
unauthorized arrest, by the Police, of
the whole assemblage, numbering up- Cbah.
wards of one hundred persons, of both
sexes. After a brief incarceration, the
colored devotees of Terpsichore were un
conditionally released, no charges having
been prefered against them. It is re
ported that Gen- Davis, gave no sanction
for any such unworantable and
unjust interference with the liberty
of these colored people, who by the
President’s Proclamation are now just as
free as white men, and have equally as
much right to trip the heavy heel or
“light fantastic too” as the most opulent
and aristocratic in our midst, provided,
of course, they conduct themselves in a
decorous and projjer manner.
We would not be understood by either
our white or colored citizens as advoca
ting public colored balls, for we are de
cidedly opposed to them in every way.
and if our co msel is worth heeding, we
would urge the colored people of Savan
nah to frown down, for the present at
least, these expensive and wicked frivoli
ties. There is not a colored man or wo
man in Savannah who can honestly af
ford to spend a dime for such nonsence
and idle pastimes as balls and parties. If
you have any dollars or dimes to throw
away foolislily for such luxuries as balls
and all their costly concomitants of gew
gaws, fancy dresses, refreshments, &c. f
far better donate it to your churches, or
pour it into your school fund for the ed
ucation of your ignorant children. One
dollar, the price o: a ball ticket, expend
ed in alphabet blocks or school books, will
do wonders-in elevating vicious children
who romp the streets in idleness.
We denounce the unlawful interference
of any parties with the freedom of the
colored race so long as they conduct
themselves in a becoming manner, but
we must say that attending giddy balls is
wicked extravagance, when we consider
the destitute and impoverished condition
of the black people. Why will the col
ored people not reflect upon the gigantic
obstacles that beset them, and the heavy
responsibilities that will rest upon them
for years to come? Learn lessons of
frugality from the white people. Study
habits of economy and save your hard
earnings for something more useful and
profitable than amusements. The white
people of Savannah are too poor to in
dulge in such luxuries as balls, and all
their amusements are chiefly devoted to
charitable purposes. Winter is rapidly
drawing nigh, government will not feed
white or black people, and with the large
numbers of idle negroes that are now in
our city, and will doubtless continue to
arrive, many of them unable to procure
employment, it is evident that great suf
fering and perhaps starvation will stare
these impoverished colored people in the
L face. Tnose of you who rely upon re
ceiving much assistance from the white
population will be deceived, and when it
is .00 late you will find to your sorrow
that your hopes of aid and succor were
fastened with a rope of sand. The ma
jority of the white i nhabitants are hardly
able, by dint of perseverance and econo
my, ip keep gaunt misery from their
own doors, and hid they the spirit to
aid you, they would be powerless
in tbeir present baplesr condition. Your race
is now on trial before the world, therefore see
to it that jou pro re to your worst enemies that
freedom is the natural ttate that God intended
all men to exist in. Don’t, by wicked iodol-
gencies in follies, prove freedom a corse to the
colored race, and draw down upon your people
the anathemas of those who desire to see yon
prosper. Work more and dance less; earn all
you can, rave it, and spend but little. Shan
dance halls, tippling shops and evil company.
Fill your charches and school booses and yon
will then not be annoyed by sodden arrests at
questionable assemblages- Dancing now is too
much like “Nero fiddling while Rome was
burning.”
Fatal Accident.
Mrs. Mulviue, living 00 West Broad street,
between Harris and Charlton streets, met with a
serious accident, some ten days since, by her
clothes taking fire. She was horribly burnt, and
suffered excrutiating pain until Tuesday last,
whso death relieved her of her Bufferings, and
she was bnried on Tuesday afternoon.
Tbs ‘ Countertwit Twenties.”
Notwithstanding our caution on Tuesday,
quite a number of these notes were in circula
tion yesterday, and we have heard of several
parties being ‘‘stock” with them. There is no
necessity for this, as the counterfeit note is
easy of detection, and any one at all accustom
ed to the handling of money, can readily dis
cover the difference between the counterfeit and
the genuine.
A Great Csrlssity.
We would advise our readers who desire to be
hold due of the most astounding freaks of nature
to visit St. Andrews’ Hall te-day and see Miss
Leak, the armless young lady, a native of Geor
gia, who will sew, cat, writh. aad use her knife
and fork with her feet wita as mucb dexterity,
ease and comfort as though blessed with two
perfect arms. We were present at a private levee
given lasr evening at the Pulaski House, aod
we can safely assure all who visit St. Andrew’s
Hall ft*at they will be amply repaid for tbeir
trouble.
Cessation •( Nail Communication
Between Savannah and New lark.
Owing to the dock-like precision,
regularity and great energy of the Post
Office authorities in New York, foub
steamei»s from New York have reached
this port within the last seven dayr, not
ONE OF WHICH BROUGHT A SOLITARY MAIL
The above paragraph should perhaps
be more clearly explained to the uniniti
ated. It is an ironical item, and we
mean sarcasm, when we talk of such
unheard of virtues as precision, regulari
ty, and promptness, in alluding to
the despatching of the Savannah mail
from New York to this port. The press
of this city, as well os the entire.business
community, fully appreciates the hercu-
lcau efforts made in their behalf at New
York to defraud them of their mail, for
the transportation of which Government
liberally rewards the various steamors . —
If a city, the size of Savannah, is to have
| its great intec^sts jeopardized through
the criminal neglect of irresponsible mail
agents in New York, it is high time com
plaints should be made to the proper
quarters, in order that such gross, inex
cusable carelessness should be severely
punished.
Iu behalf of our merchants we enter
a solemn protest against any further
repetition of such conduct. Will the
Chief Postoffice officials at New York,
whose special duty it is to attend to the
prompt forwarding of our mails, be good
enough to prevent four .steamers sailing
for Savannah without one mail bag in fu
ture ? Why can’t we have a daily mail
by rail, now that perfect railroad commu
nication is again established between
Charleston and Wilmington ? Give us
our daily mail and we will forgive all
these trespasses Mr. Postmaster.
