POETRY-
BANK SUSPENSION.
On Cupid's bank Love drew a draft
In favor of myself,
And payable in kisses quaffed
From some fair maiden elf.
I clutched the check with eager grip,
Before the ink had dried,
And let not many moments slip,
E’er to the bank I hied.
With trembling heart, but firm resolve,
I felt a sheepish fellow,
When I demanded payment of
Mary, the paying teller.
She gazed upon the scrip askance;
In coquetry well trained,
Conceiving at a single glance,
The import it contained.
Then backward threw her curly head,
As if she bad intended,
To pay me off, but simply said,
* *Tiiis bank has just suspended.”
GOING TO SLEEP.
The light is fading down the sky,
The shadows grow and multiply,
I hear the thruahe’a evening song;
But I have borne with toil and wrong
So long, so long 1
Dim dreams my drowsy senses drown—
So, darling, kiss my eyelids down!
My life’s brief spring went wasted by—
My summer ended fruitless ;
I learned to hunger, strive and wait,—
I found you love,—oh, happy fate!
So late, so late!
Now all my fields are turning brown,—
So, darling, kiss my eyelids down 1
Oh, blessed sleep! oh, perfect rest!
Thus pillowed on your faithful breast,
Nor life nor death is wholly drear,
O tender heart, since you are here,
So dear, so dear!
Sweet love, my soul’s sufficient crown !
Now, darling, kiss my eyelids down 1
nail Items.
The Vicksburg Journal says that on the 24th

of one formerly laid in the Bed Sea.

the effects of the stroke. He had previously a
long and strong beard, which entirely disappeared.

Gen. Asboth, eommandiug at Barranoas, Fla ,
has issued an order to the following purport:—
“As there appears to be some misconception re
lative to the parole given to soldiers of the late
sc-called Confederate army, it is hereby announ

laws of the United States, and any violation of
those laws, as well at the proclamation of the
President o! the United Seates in regard to sla

with speedy punishment.
It is stated that a subscription for Jeff. Davis is

A batcheior friend ot ours returning one even

But all play and uo work makes Jack a bad bov.
The wav in which some treat, or woald like to
treat tbe South is not inaptly illustrated by the
anecdote ot the Dutchman who whipped his son
and sat him down in a corner. The Isd continu

over tbe grief of bis castigation soon enough to
suit the impatient father, when the latter hternly
