~QottomofTH* Ocean.—Mr. Green, the-
famous diver, tells singular stories of his ad
ventures, when malting search in the deep
waters ol the ocean. He gives some sketches
of wh at he saw on the Silver Banks, near
Hayti:
The banks of coral on which my divings
were made, are about forty miles in length,
and from ten to twenty in breadth.
On this bank of coral is presented to the
diver one ol itie most beautiful and sublime
scenes tbe eye ever beheld. The water va-
ries uom ten to one hundred feet in depth,
and is so clear that the diver can see from
two huudred to three hundred feet when
submerged, with little obstruction to the

the deep winding avenue, he leels that they

The White Poppv.—An article next to
provision, ot more importance to the South-
ern Confederacy than any thing else, I no
tice is more neglected by the public journals
thaD ail others. 1 mean the culture of the
white poppy.
It is wouderful indeed, to see how care
less the Southern people are on this im
portant subject. To see them neglect the
culture of a drug so vastly valuable; and I
might add, the use of which is almost indis
pensable; an article too, that is so easily cul
tivated, and its properties so conveniently
obtained by every class ot mankind. There
is no part ol tbe world in which the white
poppy can be raised more profitably than in
these Southern States. And a few minutes
instruction would qualify any child ol
teu or twelve years of age, for gathering
the juice, aud making it into opium. I look
upon it us an important culture, even if the
war was noi ( upou up, because it would retain
a vast quantity of money here, and besides
it is oue ot the most useful drugs in the prac
tice of medicine, belonging to the whole
catalogue.
To'uudertake to enumerate ail the com
plaints in which opium is useful in some
form or other, or at some S' age of the
disease, would be to give jou the whole
catalogue of disease to which the human
system is subject with very lew exceptions.
I do uoi wish.to be understood to say that
opium cures all diseases; but that in the
course oi the disease^ and iu some shape or
other, either in combination with some
other rerneuy or alone, internally or ex
ternally, it judiciously and properly applied
it may be used benehcially in at least nine
teen cases out ot every twenty. 1 would
• not cm.llue myself aloue to the While
Poppy, other kinds will do, especially ihe
black, but the Greeks and Turks, 1 believe
most always confined themselves to the
wuue.
The manner of culture should be as fol
lows : Have good land well broken, and
sow in drills about two and a hall leei apart;
.when up euough to work, chop it out as
you would cotton, leaving one or two stalks
in a hill, or it your seeds are scarce you may
drop lour or live in a hill about twelve or
iourteeu inches apart, theu thin out as
above. Wheii it begins to bloom and until
it mature.-, it the weather is dry, it will be
necessary to water it otten, as this makes

The Marriage dr George the Fourth. —
Malmesbury tells us of the private life of
the Duke ol Brunswick, Princess Caroline’s
father, who was to die, like his warlike son,
in arms against the French ; presents us to
his courtiers, his favorite; hia duchess,
George the Third’s sister, a-grim old Prin
cess who took the British envoy aside and
told him wicked old stories of wicked old
dead people and times; who came to En
gland afterwards when her nephew was re
gent, and lived in the shabby furnished
lodging, old and dingy, and deserted aud
grotesque, but somehow loyal. And we go
with him to the Duke to demand the prin
cess’ hand in form, and we hear the Bruns
wick guns fire their adieu salute a> the
Prince of ^Vales (afterwards George the
Fourth) departs in the lro3t and snow; and
we visit the domains of the Prince Bishop
of Osnaburg—the Duke ot York of our eariy
time; and we dodge about from the French
revolutionist, Whose ragged legions are pour
ing over Holland and Get many, and tramp
ing down the whole world to the tune of
ca ina (here we go;) and we take shipping
at Slade and we land at Greenwich, where
the princess’ ladies are in waiting to receive
her royal highness.
What a history follows 1 Arrived in Lon
don, the bridegrom husband eager to re
ceive his bride. When she was first pre
sented to him, Malmesbury says she very
properly attempted to kneel. He raised
her gracefully enough, embraced her, and
turning around-said:
“Harris, I am not well; pray get me a
glass of brandy.”
I said, “Sir, had you not better have a
glass ot water ?”
Upon which, much out of humor, he said,
with a terrible oath, “No, I will go to the
Queen.”
Wnat could be expected fiom a wedding

Malmesbury gives us ihe following of the
marriage story; hew the prince reeled into
cuurcn to be married; how he hiccoughed
out nis vows of fideii.y—you know how he
k< pt them; how he pursued Uie woman
whom he had married; to what a state be
had brought her; with what blows he bad
truck her; with what malignity he pur
sued her; what his treatment of his daugh

first ge. llenian of Europe !” There is no
stronger satire on the pioud English of that
day, than that they admired George.
No, thank God, we can tell ot better gen
tlemen; and whilst our eyes turn away,
shocked, from this monstrous image of
pride, vanity, weakness, they may see i n
that England over which the last George
pretended to reign, some who merit indeed
thg title of gentlemen, some who make our
hearts beat when we hear their names, and
whose memory we fondly salute when that
of yonder imperial manikin is tumbled into
oblivion.—Thackeray's Four Georges.

BY VIRGINIA DE FOREST.
“Oh, dear!” said my dear friend, Lizzie
Evans, bursting into my room one morning,
with a most despairing look on her pretty
face. “Ob, dear! lam tired of playing
teacher and mistress to a raw Irish girl, who
does not know the difference between a
bean and a pumpkin; and I have come tft
you to have a long chat, and try to drive off
the blues. Oh, Annie, darling I” she con
tinued, with a ludicrously solemn air,“nev
er go to house-keeping, or, it you do, don’t
hire an Irish girl ‘who has to larn.”’
“Why, L zzie,” said I. “What is the mat
ter ? Is the girl stupid ? ’
‘•I’ll tell you what she did to-day, and
leave you to judge of her talents. Last
evening I made up a quantity of breakfast
cake for this morning. They were the kind
mother taught me to make, and she told me
they rtquired a long baking; so, I said to
Biddy: ‘Be sure you put this on the first
thing in the morning.’ ‘Ob, yes inarm; it’s
understanding you, I am; the first thing.’
Happy in the delusion that for once she un
derstood me, 1 leit tbe cakes in her care.
Thi9 morning, when we came to breakfast,
Frank said: ‘Lizzie, who could have made
these cakes?’ ‘Idid,” said I, “aiut they
good ?’ ‘They are perfectly raw,’ said he,
holding one up; aud so they were. Bo I
raDg tor B ddy, and asked her wny she had
uoc oaked the cakes. ‘Sure, marin/said my
bright pupil, ‘I did jest ns yourself tould
me. Faith, I put the cakes in the oven jest
as soon as I got in the kitchen, hut I was
aftber taking them off as soon as tbe tire
b g*n to burning, for tear they’d be aftber

“A bright pupil, indeed,” said I, laugh
ing. “You’ll have to teach ii r every
thing”
“Everything ! That puts me in mind of

“For so yourg a bride and house keeper,
you cenaiuly have had some experience,”
said I, laughing.
“Are you ever coming to see me,” said
Lizzie, after we had spent some time chat
ting. “You have never seen my ‘Green
Erin,’ as Frank calls her.”
•lie sure, I sbai.pay Biddy a visit,” said
I, 88 we parted.
About a week alter, I met Lizzie iu the
street, and she told me that one of the
“entry thieves,” as they are called, had
come to the house while she was out, and
under pretence of waiting till her return,
had taken away all the small parlor orna
ments while Biddy was in the kitchen. “It
is so provoking to lose things so,” said Liz
zie ; “and many of these things I valued
because they were bridal gifts. However,
I impressed it upon Biddy’s verdant mind,
that the next time people of that kind
called when. I was out, she was to tell them
to come again, and never leave them alone
in the parlor. She represents this thief as
quite a respectable looking woman."
A morning or two after this conversa
tion, I started to spend the day with Lizzie,
according to our agreement. I went quite
early in the forenoon. A girl, whom I
knew must be the “Green Erin” of Lizzie’s
stories, opened the door.
“Is Mrs. Evans in ?” I asked.
“No; it’s at market she is. You’ll have
to b§ coming again.”
“Ob’, no!” said I. “I’ll wait till she re
turns.”
“No, indade, you won’t!” cried Biddy,
obstructing my entrance by placing her
stout person in the doorway.
“Why, what do you mean ?" said I, very
much astonished.
“I mane ye ll have to clear out, and
come back again, if you’re wanting to see
Mrs. Ivans. Oh, ye needn’t flare up! Ill
not budge an inch ; troth, I’m knowing my
business.”
After much urging, and some insolence
on Biddy's part, I managed to effect an en
trance. Biddy followed me into the parlor
and seated herself directly opposite me.—
Concluding that she would leave the room
as soon as she had satisfied her curiosity, lor
I thought she wanted to find out who I
was, I took up a book to read till Lizzie
came in.
“Oh, I thought so!” cried Biddy, snatch
ing the book from me. “Jest be afther kap-
ing your hands to yourself. 1 know what
you're up to.”
•‘Give me that book instantly !” said I an
grily, but with a feeling of terror, for I had
arrived at the conclusion that the girl was
crazy.
“No, I’ll not,” said she; “and if
afther Mrs. Ivans, I wish ye’d jest come in
to the kitchen and wait, for I’ve got scrub
bing to do; and it’s not sitting here the
whole day I*d be, a looking afther you.”
“Go into tbe kitchen,” said I. “I don’t
require you here.”
“Oh, ye’d be mighty plased to get rid of
me! Now wouldn’t ye? But I’m wailing
here till the mistress comes as well as you.”
At that moment, Lizzie came in. “Dear
Annie, this is really kind, to come so early,”
said she; “but what is the matter ? You
look angry, and Biddy insolent. What is
tbe matter ?”
“I’m going, mum,” said Biddy. “I've
been afther watching that she didn’t walk
out of the door with the books, jest as
t’other woman did with t’other things. But
since you’re here yerself, and she sames to
be knowing ye, I’ll go to my scrubbing.”
The whole truth flashed on me as Biddy
spoke, and as my eye met Lizzie’s, we both
burst into a hearty laugh. Biddy had taken
me for an “entry thief.”

Mental and Corporeal Suffering —
There is a very pretty Persian apologue on
the. difference between mental and corpo
real et-fferingj' A king and his minister
were discussing the subject, and differed in
opinicn. The minister maintained the first
to be more severe, and, to convince bis sov
ereign of it, be took a iamb, broke his leg.
shut it up, and put food before it. He took
another, shut it up with a tiger, which whs
bound by a strong chain, so that the beast,
could spring near, but not seize the lamt>,
and put food also before him. Iu tbe morn
ing he carried the king to see the effect ot
the experiment. The lamb with the broken
leg had eaten up all tbe food placed before
it—the other was found dead from fright.
Singular Coincidence.—Abe Lincoln
was killed on the 14th—the anniversary of
the fall of Fort Sumter.
