New York Harbok Filling Up.— Such is the alarming announcement of the New York N<v:s. That paper states liiat a message has been lately sent to rhe Common <Jouncil of the Empire City setting forth, on the authority of the liai bor Commissioners, that the water near Diamond Reef had shoaled so rap- j idly that two large vessels could hardly pass each other in the channel. The tilling out of a shoal from Mitchell to Governor’s Island would intercept the direct navigation between the Hudson and .first rivers. The alleged cause of this injurious es-, fc t is said to be the washing out of the earth at tho Battery enlargement. The A r r« j ustly says that the filling up of the j h u bor would put an end to tha com- ] me cial greatness of New York. I New York is in dunneerof not hav- j ing enter enough to accomm.xlaic itiip- j j ing 'f the present sue of vessels, what j would lecome of her should the projects | f,., mo l uer steam vessels be realised f In .hat event, the sceptre of this Amer ican i re would pass to seaports having deeper harbors, aed among them, our own Norfolk stands pre-eminent.— Rich.
