Wo aro la frequent xecdpfi of letters from nl!

Theatre.
We were glad to see a decidedly bet
ter liouse on Saturday night, and trust
it is evidence that our people are begin
ning to appreciate the merits of Mr.
Marchant’s Company.
We never saw the little Comedy of
China //; so well played. It is rather
3 poor affair we think, at best, but
Messrs. Chippendai.e, Dyott, Antes and
Miss Shaw made a capital good thing of
it. Mi , Shaw has a sweet voicS, and
her singing and acting are deserved
ly popular.
Mr. Smith, in the Thumping bgacy,
and Mr. liskf. in Paddy Mile'e /toy,made
a decided impression. It isno easy mat
ter to do the Irish character, but Mr.
I s Paddy Mild 3 barring a little over
acting in one or two instances, was cap
ital.
1 here is a good chance for a laugh to
night. Look at the bill, Fiske plays
If.'. .Houser and Granby (Hag; Smith plays
iW Tyke, barm Smyitof and Brian
O'Lynn; Miss Shaw plays LLelle, belay
bah: and Jenny I.iml , and sings any
number of songs. Go, if you want to bo
pleased.
Tlmtljevg’s Concerts.
Ihe first Concert of M. Tuauncßa, in
Charleston, seems to have been a most
brilliant success. The Courin says :
“Shortly after the doors were thrown
open almost all the seats that had not
previously been secured were immedi
ately occupied, so that when (lie hour
approached for the commencement of
the Concert, the immense hall and gal
lants presented an array of beauty and
fashion, which gave us a pleasant rem
iniscence of other days, when amuse
ments in Charleston seemed to exert a
more general attraction than in late
years —a more numerous and fashiona
ble attendance has never before been
seen in our recollection, and we were
delighted to witness it. In looking
round upon the brilliant throng, there
were few families in our community
that ha 1 not oat, or many, representa
tive* present. His Excellency thu Gov
ernor of the State, and many of the
Reverend Clergy were there. We can
only say to those who were not there,
that they lost a great enjoyment.”
The sale of tickets for the only Con
cert in Augusta, commenced at 10
o’clock, on Saturday. An hour before
the time appointed, the store of Mr. Gat
lin, was crowded almost to suffocation.
Hats were mashed, corns trampled on,
buttons bursted off, and one gentleman
came out minus the nurative of his coat
Before noon, all the tickets were sold,
and hundreds went away unable to pro
cure scats.
We trust that .11. Thalbero may yet
lie induced to give us another Concert.
Masonic Hall cannot contain one half
of our citizens who are anxious to bear
the King of Pianists and the great Vi
olinist. We know nothing of his ar
rangements for the future, but hope it
may be in bis power to return to Au
gusta after ins visit to Savannah.
Au Alabama Political Joker.
They tell a good many political jokes
of our neighbors now occupying the an
cient lands of the Alabaums, among
them the following :
An out and out party man, a land
lord, who had accommodated his-politi
cal friends for twenty years, happened
togo Into a nominating convention just
as they had finished their business, and
heard a little dedegate move that “ this
convention adjourn sine die."
“Sine die!’ said Mr. G. , to a
person standing near, ‘ where’s that?"
“ Why, that's way in the northern
part of the country,” said his neigh
bor.
“ Hold on if von please, Mr. Chair
men.’’ said the landlord with great em
phasis and earnestness, “hold on, sir,l’d
like to be heard on that question. I
have kept a public house for more’n
twenty years. I'm a poor man. I've
always belonged to the party, and never
split in my life. This is the most cen
tral location in the country, and it’s
where we’ve allers met. I’ve never had
nor asked an office, and have worked
night and day for the party, and now
I think, sir, it is contemptible to go to
adjourning this convention way up tv
Sine /.He."

them started ; but, when they do flame
they burn prodigiously.
