We think odr friends for tho interest thus mani fested in the paper, but we must hove the money in advance. 4». * Theatre, The first representation of Aladlm, j or the Wonderful Lump, last night, at' Concert Hal’, was witnessed by a large; house, and the performance was a most! successful.one ; the dancing of course! excepted, which was exceedingly awk ward and immodest. It will be repeated to-night, followed j by the charming little Musical Burlettal of .Lenny Lind. It is north the price of) admission to hear Miss Mark Straw sing “ Ernani rescue me,” and “Our faith then fondly plighting.” “ The Campbell's are Coming.” Our old friend, Dr. F. A. Josrs, Agent of Mat Pkei. 3 Campbell Ministrels dropped in upon us this morning, with the pleasing intelligence, that the company will app. ar here oa Monday ' night, of next week. Os course they j will he more than welcome. Almost a Fire. Yesterday afternoon, about half-past! two o'clock, our city narrowly escaped o most disastrous fire. Our neighbor of ; the Chronklt, whose cffico is next door, i gives the following account of it; The fire originated in the cellarofthe • extensive Drug-store of Messrs Plumb & Leitner, next door to the Chrmicze if ‘ Sentinel building, and was caused by the ! igniting and explosion of a barrel of al cohol, which the Porter was attempting i to tap. Instantaneously tho burning' fluid was scattered over the cellar, burn ing one hand of the Porter pretty so- j verely. and igniting the combustible materials with which it came in contact. ! In (he cellar was stored a large quantity : of Alcohol, Spirits Turpentine, Varnish and other like commodities which rcu-1 dered the danger imminent indeed. Thanks, however, to the engine of I Messrs. 0. A. Platt & Co., which is sta- j turned immediately in tho rear of the Drugstore, and the intrepid clearing of] Mi. Jacob Platt, and some others, who almost instantaneously entered tho cel- j lar, to pour upon the burning elements ' two powerful streams of water, thrown ' bv the engine, the progress of the' flames was immediasely arrested—hav- ] ing done hut little damage comparative-! ly, which is fully covered by insurance. | The fire department was also unusual-' ly prompt, and were early at the scene ! of action, hut the flames were nearly or ■ quite subdued before their engines were j brought into operation. j' IVo very much question whethersueh a feat was ever before accomplished, as i the arrest of a fire under such circum stances, and confining it to tho apart- i meat in which it originated, and wiili so ] little loss. Indeed it seems almost mi- j raculous. Injustice is done to the gallant fire- s nun of Augusta in a portion of the Chronicle s article, copied above, unin-J tentionally, however, we believe. The n engine of Messrs. Pratt & Co. certainly : did much towards subduing the flames j and preventing their spread, but it did i not do all the work, nor does it deserve )' all the credit. The fire was confined to the front part of the cellar, and the hose of the steam engine was not put into the front doors until about the same time as those of the Georgia. It is true that Messrs. Platt & Co's engine had been playing for some time in the rear, but the flames were subdued from the front, and thopvaise is due to our gal lant firemen as well as to Messrs. Plait 1 & Co. We do not desire to be understood as i wishing to detract one iota from the ’ praise due Messrs. 0. Mr. J. 15. Plait. Our object is simply i to do justice to tho firemen of Augusta. If ans' set of men outlie face of earth deserves full and complete justice, it Is the firemen who peril life and limb, to protect the property of our citizens, ' without hope of rewaid. v Oeatk of C. A. Brown. ■ IVe regret to learn that C. A.. Brown, , Esq., Supt. of the Augusta & Savannah Rail toad, died on Monday morning last, at the rosidcnceof his mother, in Macou, 1 aged 20 years. His disease was chronic diarrhOK. Few men of his age have been more beloved in tho circle in which they moved, and few have left more to mourn an early decease, ’ THE ItKTOHT. BY GEO, I'. MOBBIB. I The Advocate thus speaks of the ini i provements effected : ] Heretofore the obstacles to navigation appeared insurmountable. There was no i means to clean out the river—no concert j of action among the friends of the enter prise, and the obstructions in the bay . were supposed by many, under the cir cumstances, to lie of such a nature as to i render their removal impossible. Ail these difficulties, however, have been overcome. The State furnished the ! means, Capt. That it ach; upon the Liver, may bo known from the fact that in Jaundice or cases of Bilious- ■ ness It causes fltae bilious evacuations, readily removes unnatural yellow tinge about the eyes, and upon the skin, and improves the health and ' spirits. 1 Those who have tried this Alterative for Af fections of the Liver, have found that it efforts ■ a cure naturally and gradually, by improving the health, and that but little or no other medk-iue ! is necessary in these affections. Its healthy action on the Liver and purifying . effect upon the blood, made it a great preventive of sickness. For children, this is generally ah the purgative that is necessary to bo given, and as often as otherwise, is all the medicine that - necessary to be given, especially to those trou bled with w orms, or j debilitated state of health.
