Notice to Advertisers.'*
Advertisements for the Evening Dispatch must v
be handed in by eleven o'clock in the forenoon, in
order to appear the same day. The heavy pres-
sure of advertisements upon the columns of our
paper will not admit of their reception after the ’’
hour named.
s
Send the Cash. 3
IVe are in frequent receipt of letters from all (
portions of this tnd the adjoining States, contain-j
ing names of persons subscribing to the DU- j
patch, with the promise to send the money " in J *
the course of the year." To alt such wo would
say that names cannot be entered upon our mail 1
books until the subscription is paid. IVe are
aware that times are hard, and that is one rca- 1
son why we cannot deviate from oar custom. *
Nor can we spare time to answer such requests.
We thank our friends for the interest thus muni- '
tested in the paper, but we must have the money
in advance. 1
Theatre.
“Still Waters Eun Deep” anil “Sketch
es in India” were performed at Concert |
Kail on Saturday night, to a small audi- j
ence, but with more than ordinary sue-!
cess. The first piece is of sterling merit
in itself, and the characters were well |
sustained. The second piece—“ Sketc- j
es in India”—brings out some of the j
best actors of the Company, and was
very amusing. The third piece was too
much cut up, to make room for Sunday.
We were sorry to see so few to witness
the night's performance, for it deserved
better patronage.
To-night Miss Cappell, a favorite
witli tlie people of Augusta, appears for
the first time this season, in the charac
ter of Mrs. Iluller, in the play of the
“Stranger.” Mr. Dvorr appears as the
Stranger. This announcement, of it
self', is a guarantee, that the perform
ance will he a good one ; and the minor
characters are admirably cast. Miss
Shaw, whose songs have rendered her a
great favorite, will sing the Marseilles
Hymn, and the Irish farce of “Brian
O'Lynn,” will conclude the perform
ance.
The company is now a strong one,
and if they continue to put out -as at
tractive bills as they have for to-night,
we cannot doubt that they will he libe
rally patronized.
[communicated.]
Mu. Editor This evening the se
cond monthly meeting of the Young
Men's Christian Association is expected
to he held in the Lecture room of the
Baptist Church. It is, indeed, refresh- 1
ing to the hearts of those who, from
the incipient stages of this good work,
have been seeking the smiles and favor j
of our Heavenly Father, to have at this
early day his manifest approval in re
commending it, with so much of inter
est to its members, giving it a place
near the hearts of Pastors and members
of our churches and commend l ' gi- so
decidedly to the good wishes and pro ised
aid of the I’hilanthrophio of oar city,
who are not professing Christians.— i
Should we not take courage to press for- i
ward toward the prize of our high call- j
ing—with the watch word of our hearts,
“The Glory of God.” Let us, who are
Christian, appropriate to ourselves the
precious promises of God which in j
Christ Jesus are yea and amen to the I
glory of his name, and all made over j
to ns a living faith in Him. “Let him
know that he who converts the sinner |
from the error of his way, shall save a
soul from death, and cover a multitude
of sins.”
Now, Mr. Editor, I ask, what greater
glory can any man ask than to bo aim
ing at so high and holy a purpose ? afid
when he looks still farther in the.
abodes of the redeemed and sees that
other bright promise of old testament
record—that “lie that is wise shall |
shine as the brightness of the firma
ment, and he that turns many to right- j
eousness as the stars for ever and ever” j
—how sliail we ever find any relaxation j
to cur efforts till the righteousness of
this association “go forth as brightness, \
and the salvation thereof as a lamp
that burnetii.”
We now number about eighty mem
bers, active and associate, and will have a
probable accession of twenty to thirty
this evening with several honorary
and some life members. We have made
as yet no calls in our official capacity.
The Church committee, I think, have not
yet taken up the work assigned them,
hut it is hoped they will during the
present week, when we confidently
hope and expect to see large accessions
of eacli kind of membership.
Those who cannot become active or
associate, can be honerary or life mem
bers, and in this way by the payment of
-or twenty dollars, will serve great
ly in establishing this association upon
a firm basis as to its pecuniary wants. In
order to accomplish the greatest amount
of good, we must have an eligible lo
cation, a Library and Reading Room, and
with other appurtnanccsas us
an outfit for Lectures, which we hope to '
enjoy at stated periods. This will involve
considerable expenditure, but we in- 1
tended from the begining to avoid debt,
and therefore we exhort Christian men
to lay upon this altar their contributions
in money and prayers for its entire sue- .
cess.
Polytechnic School.
We would call attention to this new
institution, recently opened by Mr. :
Stearns in our city. It affords to those \
who are deficient in any branch of ed- 1
ucation, an opportunity to take a course
of instruction, at night, at a very mod
erate expense, and without interfering
with their business engagements in the ,
day. Such a school ought to ho sup
ported and made permanent. Mr. 1
Stearns will devote himself to certain 1
branches, and has secured competent !
assistance in others, and offers to the
young men of Augusta all the facilities
of a first class school. To-night a class
will be formed in Book Keeping. See
special notice.
Gen. Scott.
The New York Pent lias learned from
unquestionable authority that Gen.
Scott is not to go out to California to or
ganize the military movement against
the Mormons. On Wednesday, Adj.
Gen. Irwin McDowell wrote to the Pa
cific Steamship Co., countermanding
the order engaging his passage.
| Ex-President Fillmore.— A New York
! paper says that the lady who is expect-
Jed to make Mr. Fillmore “the happiest
of men” on 11th of February next is a
1 Mrs. Mclntosh, a woman distinguished
| for a great variety of charms, solid as
j well as transitory. Her former hus
) band made a fortune in the crockery bu
| Biness in Albany, and was President of
tlie Albany and Schenectady Railroad
during the last three years preceding
the consolidation.
We publish tlie above not so much as
an item of news, as to illustrate the
impertinence of tlie New York papers.
Mr. Fillmore and Mrs. Mclntosh with
all her charms probably would prefer
not to he thus thrust into the world of
gossip. But no place is secure from the
prying impudence of a New York Re
| porter.
Tlie Serf* of Russia*
.! It is stated that the rescript recently
j promulgated by tlie Empcrior of Russia
i i only carries out the principles announc
i ed in an Imperial decree, issued imme
. diately after he ascended the throne.
| The rescript was dated on the 2d of De
-1 comber last, and addressed to the Gov
■ ernors of Vilno, Kovno, and Grodno, in
which provinces it seems to have been
' determined first to make trial of tlie
; reform. District committees are to be
■ appointed in each province, composed
jointly of intelligent landholders, and
of nominees of the Ct own who are to
. devise plans for their respective dis
j tricts, for the abolition of serfdom. The
; main conditions of change arc to he
; “ the maintenance of tlie right of pro
! perty in the soil, and the option to the
■ I cultivators to purchase, at a redemption
. price, tlie permanent ownership, with
-1 out rent of the allotments or enclosures
in connection with their habitations.”
1 \ The serfs are further to have, within
. j certain limits and conditions, the right
to hire as farms certain portions of
land, for which they are either to pay a
labor or a money rent. In fine, the
j system of compulsory labor is to be en
! tirely done away with, under the mild
jer and more enlightened rule of the
present Emperor.
