I
There was a large house at Concei t (
Hall last night, which, considering the
sparse attendance heretofore, may be] I
regarded a decided compliment to Mr. j ’
Edwin Booth, who appeared, for the first;
time in Augusta, as Hamlet. llis perso- \
nation of that character was a most ar- j
tistic performance, and dieted the j
warmest applause. His enunciation is j
clear, distinct and euphonious ; hisges-j
tures easy, graceful and natural, and!
his entire style that of one who has the j
intellect to appreciate, and the skill to j
delineate thegreatconceptionsofSiiAKKs

We had prepared a more extended no
tice of the performance, hut must omit j
it, with the remark, that Mr. Booth :
was well sustained by Mr. March ant's j
excellent company.
To-night the company will appear in |
Bulwer’s great play of Richelieu, or the j
Conspiracy. Booth as Richelieu. This |
is said to be his great character. Miss j
Caitell as Julie de Morlemar. The per- j
fortnance to conclude with the farce of I
tire Two Buzzards.
We hope to see Concert Hall crowded; \
as a compliment, not merely to a son!
of the Elder Booth, hut as a becoming
evidence of appreciation of a young ac.
tor of remarkable talent.
The Lecture of Mr. Thomas.
Our readers will bear in mind, that
Mr. Thomas lectures to-night, at Ma
sonic Hall, on Oratory and Orators. He
comes among us with the very highest
endorsement ns a lecturer, and we trust
that our people will evince an apprecia
tion of an intellectual feast, presented
them by a gentleman to the manor
born, as warm as they hai&e lately ex
: tended to entertainments of a di lie rent
character.

Bust of Mr. FetJgru.
We find the following notice of the
bust of this distinguished gentleman in
the j-’cbinary number of RussetTs Maga
zine.
As a local art item, which will possess i
an interest, however, far beyond the i
limits of our city, we note the arrival!
and exhibition, in Charleston, of a bust 1
of that well known and esteemed jurist
and barrister, James L. Petigru, Esq., j
which has been executed to a compli- j
mentary order and request of bis profes
sional friends and associates, by Alexan- j
der Galt, a native and resident of Nor- j
folk, Va ~ now pursuing art studies and 1
executing sundry ctuumission, Jut Flor-!

val, and in many eases admiration,
whether considered in relation to the
subject or the author.

A Georgia Lecturer Abroad.
We notice an announcement in the
Richmond Dispatch that A. H. H. Daw
gon. Esq., Knight of Mount Vernon, is
to deliver his lecture on “the Grave of '
WasHntjhm" in that city, at an early
flay. We congratulate our friend D. on
the success and popularity of his mis

his widening fame as a lecturer in the
metropolis of the Old Dominion. t
Apologies in ttie House.
Mr. Keitt, of South Carolina, on Mon
day afternoon, immediately after the
passage of the Harris resolution in tire
House, made an explanation in refer
ence to the affair between him and Mr.
Grow of Pennsylvania, which is report
ed as follows in the Globe of the same
evening:
Mr. Keitt, by unanimous consent of
the House, made a personal explanation.
He assumed all responsibility for the
violation of the dignity and decorum of
the House on Saturday morning. He>
lie said, was the aggressor and he alone.
He expressed bis profound regret for the
occurrence.
Personal collisions, especially in a
i legislative body, were reprehensible, if
possibly avoidable. He could not say
I whether or not a blow was directed at
! him. He was not conscious of having
recer ed one. Ho wished to make to
| the House whatever reparation he could,
|by this expression of his regret for
i what had occurred.
! Mr. Grow said that he had been
taught in his youth that fights among
j men were disgraceful. His mature
judgment had approved the teaching.
| Vet the right of self-defence was dear to
j him.
I On Saturday morning, for the first
j time in his life, lie was engaged in a
personal encounter. He expressed his
I regret at its occurrence, and tendered
I his apologies to the House.
| The House then <at twenty minutes
j before three) adjourned.

j riously ill.
BT A Washington correspondent
speaking of the late fight, in the House
of Representatives, says:
I was in that part of the gallery which
: ih just over the scene of combatand saw
the whole affair. No weapons were us
jed or shown except those which nature
has provided.
I xAll night the House presented a
strange and impressive appearance un
der the mysterious looking yellow light
that descended from the pictured ceil
| ing from the ruddy and golden interior
:of the hall. The members, worn and
sleepy, were stretched iu various atti
tudes upon tlm-ir chairs and desks.a few
| fortunate ones having secured the solas.
At the sides of the chamber they were
unusually quiet, and answered languid
ly to their names as the everlasting call
.of the roll went on. About a hundred
|spectators were in the gallery at ljnost
iof them lying down, and some appa
■rently fast asleep. One intrepid lady
lingered in the gallery, intently watch -
i ing the scene below.

Oh, the amount of suffering that has beeneudur

I do hereby certify that, after buffering for

pain H orn Chronic Rheumatism, and finding do
permanent relief from any of the many prescrip

now entirely well, not only of Rheumatism it
self, but likewise of its effects. Ibis cure was
effected by a preparation styled Lynch’s Anti-

two dozen, and Lav «noi had any symptoms of
my old pains for thr c * years. The effect upon
me was like magic Within three days alter i

To all suffering from Rheumatism I do hearti

to secure a lasting cure.
Most respectfully, i s I v n.
Entonton, April 22. 1856.
I have no hesitation in saying, that after 1 .iv

lastly, most excruciatingly In my neck, 1 took
two or three dozen of Lynch's Anti KLeumaUc

i constitution much shattered, I have received tL«
greatest benefit imaginable; my relief flora
suffering and pain, I cannot attribute to any thing
Viui the powders, lor I have tried everything
in vain, that friends c.oukl suggest or physicians
prescribe. 1 would, therefore, earnestly re
