Notice to Advertiser#.
Advertisements for the Evs.Ni.vo IlisVATCli must
he handed in by eleven o'clock in the forenoon, in
order to appear the same day. The heavy pres
sure of advertisements upon the columns of our
paper will not admit of their reception after the
hoar named.
We received no Charleston mar
ket, up the time of going to press.
Signor Blitz.
The pleasant countenance of the King
•f the Magicians beamed in upon us
thk morning. He has just returned
from Athens, where he crowded the
Town Hall, despite the bad weather.
He opens at Concert Hall, to-night,
where he will introduce lots of new
tricks. Rememdei that the price of ad
mission has been reduced to 25 cents—
children and servants 15 cents.
—
Blind Tom.
The weather has been so bad the past
two evenings, that the manager of
Blind Tom's Concerts, will remain in
the city during the week. Performance
to-night at Masonic Hall, and every
evening this week.
—
Dentistry.
There is no one of the professions
which deservedly stunds higher in pub
lic estimation than that of dentistry—
nor are the services of any of our pro
fessional men oftener called into requi
sition. This is peculiarly tiue at the
South, wh6re, either from the nature of
•ur climate, the food we take, or the
habsts of our people, cases of decayed
teeth are more numerous than at the
North or in Europe.
From the nature of the teeth, their
liability to decay, and their vast import
ance both to good looks and bodily
health, it is to the interest of every one
to Etr well assured of the competency of
those who essay to operate on them.
With no wish to be understood as de
tracting from the merits of others in
thf same profession here, we must be
allowed to call special attention to the
work of a gentleman who has beeu in
our city little less than twelve months.
We allude to Dr. Janies T. Paterson - ,
whose card appears in our col umns. Dr.
P. has operated for a large number of
our citinens since his location here, and,
we are assured from actual observation
and personal experience, lias given un
limited satisfaction. He is a gentleman
of education and refinement, a regular
ly graduated Doctor of Mediciue, and k
thoroughly experienced in his profes
sion. His rooms are conveniently loca
ted on the corner of Washington and
Ellis streets, and we feel fully author
ised to say to such of our readers, as
need his services, that they will find him
■ always ready to operate satisfactorily
and on reasonable terms.
Clitnp Amusement#.
We are pluased to notice that the sa
gacious manager of “Tom, the Pianist,”
has put the price of admission at 25
cents for grown persons, and 10 cents
for children. It is an evidence of good
sense, which we cordially commend —
for while the entertainment is of the
most interesting and wonderful charac
ter. the expense involved is less than
many other exhibitions, and the price,
of right, ought to.be reduced.
Signor Hunt will open to-night
at Concert Hall, where he has also re
•dr, ed the price of admission to 25cents.
The Lemlalhaii#
This monster vessel was successfully
(halted in the Thames, on Sunday, the
hist ult. Arrangements had been .per
fected to complete the launch on the
day previous, but t ii.: prevalance of a
heavy gale rendered a postponement
imperative, and, as Sunday proved most
auspicious, it was determined to proceed
with, the operation rather than encoun
ter the risks which a further lengthen
ed delay would have entailed. The
final floating of the great ship was es
fected with perfect ease, and no acci
dent of any kind occurred, although
the river was literally covered with
boats full of people, and the timbers
forming tide cradles, which had been
kept down by the weight of the vessel,
ascended with great force some twenty
or thirty feet above the surface of the
water. The scene was a brilliant one,
and the enthusiasm of the multitudes
who witnessed the launch was mani
fested in loud and continued cheer
ing.
The Leviathan was towed by four
powerful tug-boats to her moorings op
posite Deptford, where slic will remain
until her internal arrangements are
completed.
A Compliment.
The candid opinion of G. P. R. Jambs,
Esq., haring been solicited as to the
merits of the equestrian statue of Wash
ington recently erected at Richmond,
that gentleman pronounces it “not only
the finest work of art in the United
States, but one as fine as any in the
world—one worthy to commemorate
a man whose mind was capable of com
prehending that duty is superior to
glory, patriotism is greater than power ''
The Weallier ami so forth.
-For several days the weather has been
cvl sloppy ; yesterday morning it
, Vme cold and shivery, and about
In began to get up the most unpleas
? sort cf a cold rain and sleet imagin
able. This sort of bad conduct continu
ed until past bed time last night, and
to-day the side-walks are slippery and
almost impassable, the tops of the houses
mantled in white, and tiie streets filled
Nvith a dirty looking slush, qute painful
to contemplate. It is just the kind of
weather to give one/he ‘•blues.” and to
preclude the possibility of anything like
editorial brilliancy, or continued effort.
We saw a load of wood going up
G recne street this morning. The wag
on was draw-n by four fine, sleek look
ing mules, —while another one of the
long eared tribe walked behind, attach- j
ed to the vehicle by a rope halter.—
We puzzled ourself a little to make out
why this fifth mule was there, and fin
ally made up our mind that lie was in
tended for a relay. Some of our large
daily cotemporaries at tire North and
elsewhere adopt this principle. It is
rightly argued that the main team
' will sometimes, in the very nature of
things, get worn out and jaded and that
1 occasional relief is actually necessary.
This thing of a dead pull, day after day,
' without cessation, from one years' end
to another, is no joke, and we assure
those who never tried it on that the
mental machinery »riU sometimes refuse
1 to work, in spite of all efforts to the
contrary.
Misfortunes never come singly, is a
maxim quite as true as old. We are
not disposed to growl, this morning but
' must take the liberty of intimating to
our excellent and highly esteemed
; brethren of the press, that their papers
* are as uninteresting and devoid of news
as if they had set out with a settled de
termination to make them so. We dare
1 say the same may be said of this issue
of ours.
’ Washington’s Birth day seems to iiave
been celebrated ivith unusual enthusi
f
asm in all quarters, from which we
have yet had advices.
We shouldn’t wonder if our North
ern friends are having some nice wea
' tlier just iionv, as the cold wind which
3 brought us the sleet and ice, came from
1 that quarter. We shall know in a few
days.
. -Our senior editor has gene up the
* country to Jackson Court, where he
1 topes to stir up another interesting
, trial, whereof our readers shall bo ad
1, vised in due time.
■ | To-morrow we-shall publish a leader
iion the Kansas question—the eternal
. “Monsieur Toason” which is always
s “coming again.” In the meantime
_ keep cool and wear overshoes.
A Naval Officer I*o#te*l.
’ In our issues of yesterday and the day
before we gave telegraphic despatches
5 of various duck likely to occur in and
1 about Washington. The States, of Sat
’ urday, gives some additional informa
tion relative to the difficulty between
Ex-Lieutenant Ruixd and Commander
Bouiwell.
It appears that Mr. Rhino and Coin
- mander Bouiwell ha 1 a difficulty while
j serving together on board the “John
s Adams,” some four or five years since.
1 Mr. 11 ii ino s case came up before the
. the Third Naval Court of Inquiry du
-5 ring the last summer ; and in the rc
. port of the proceedings which lie pub
, lished, lie reflected rather severely upon
the conduct of Commander Boltwell.—
When tlie lattor officer returned from
t the Pacific, two or three months since,
. he published a reply to the charges
made by Mr. Ruixn. This pamphlet
was, however, for some reason, suppress
ed, and it was not until a few days since
v that Mr. Rhixd happened to get access
, to a copy. Ho immediately wrote to
_ Commander Boltwell, demanding that
s lie should retract everything that he
had published.
I This Commander B. refused to do,
* and on Thursday night he received
t
from Mr. Rmxi) a note demanding the
* “satisfaction of a gentleman,” and re-
I questing him to name the “time and
place.” He declined meeting Mr.
' | Ruind. The latter gentleman aceor
| dingly despatched a messenger, stating
| that at noon on the following day,
I I (Friday) he would post Commander B.
M in front of the Navy Department as a
5 “coNvard and a liar,” and that he would
1 remain forty minutes to defend it. This
1 Mr. Rhind did on Friday in the form of
a placard; but the only foe he found to
meet him was the wintry storm which
’ pelied him mercilessly as he stalked to
! and fro in front of the placard.
Mr. Rhind was arrested by the U. S.
Marshal at an early hour Friday eve
ning, and bound over to keep the peace,
t Bail was promptly given. The affair
* has created considerable stir among the i
i naval officers now in Washington.

The Law of Divorce.
The question of divorce that has long
agitated the ecclesiastical authorities of
England lias culminated at last in the
, recent promulgation of an order from
, the Bishop of Oxford to the clergy- of his
diocese, enjoining upon them to grant
no authorization of marriage, however j
. conformable in other respects, to any
■ person who may have obtained a decree
, of divorce, if the husband or wife of I
such person so divorced, he still living.l
! This pastorial instruction has created
. considerable sensation, inasmuch a# it!
comes in conflict with the authority!
and intention of the civil law, which]
1 allows the marriages thus sought tele
prevented.
Later from Texas.
The steamship Galveston, Capt. Ter
ry, from Powderhorn t-ia Galveston, ar
rived at Berwick’s Bay yesterday morn
ing.
By this arrival we have Galveston pa j
perstothe 17th inst., (one day later ;
than we had by the Mexico) and others j
from interior towns. The news is in
tercsting.
The Legislature adopted a resolution
submitting to the people an amend
ment to the constitution, to enable
each county to dispose of its school
lands, with suitable legislative restric
tions.
An extra of the Austin State Gazette
states that the joint select committee
upon the Kansas message of the Gover
nor reported favorably upon a bill to ap
point seven delegates to a convention of
the Southern States, provided that one
! be called by a majority of the slave
■ States, and appropriated SIO,OOO to pay
expenses.
The recent improvements in the Guad
alupe river it appears, have made that
stream fairly navigable to Victoria.—
The Advocate mentions the arrival at
that place of the steamboat Texas from
Indianola, with -10 passengers, and
freight to the amount of 1,500 bar
rels.
The Galveston News learns from Aus
tin that the House has passed the Sen
ate's bill for a geological survey of the
State, so amended, however, as to limit j
the present appropriation to $20,000, 1
and giving the Governor power to ap
point the State Geologist, who will
have two assistants, selected by him
self.
A letter from Austin to the Galves
ton News states that the Governor has j
vetoed the Memphis and El Jfciso Rail
road hill.
The Legislature was to adjouVn on the
16th inst.
At Richmond, on the 12th inst., two
negroes, sentenced to be hung for the
murder of their master Mr. John Doug
las, paid the penalty of the violated
law.
The citizens of Galveston are making
preparations for the celebration of Wash
i ington's birthday. A civic and milita
j ry procession, Nvith music and an oration
| are to be promint features of the (jpele
bration.
The Galveston News, of the 10th, has
the folloNving paragraphs :
We are credibly informed that there
