Signor Blitz. In consequence of tbe bad weather! Signor Blitz did not open at Concertl Hall last night. He will do so thiJ afternoon, and to-night, and as thel weather is now fine we hope to see al •rowded house, Blind Torn. We witnessed last night, the first ■performance of this truly wonderful! boy at MisonicHall. If ever an exhi bition of music was worth what it cost, this is one them ; and every person who fails to see and hear this boy, will miss an entertainment of sterling me. it. Tom will give an exhibition every day during the week at 11 o'clock, and at night at 7 1-2 o’clock, at Masonic Hall. _____ A Ma(i)llclou. Horse. The crowd in front of the I’ost Office was highly amused, this morning, at the equestrian performances of a mail Oder. The horse-boat for Blanktown became unmanageable, in consequence of being indisposed to carry two males, the mail hoy and tiie mail hag, and at every attempt to start, away into the air its heels would go! (the horse’s heels, not the boy’s, nor tbe bag’s;) and then the crowd would shout, while the unfortunate rider seemed to eye the ground with envy. Now the impetu ous steed would sit upon thesteps, now plunge widly at our friend Morris’ print shop—the delight of the audience all the time increasing. We left the scene before its conclusion, but were remind ed of those beautiful lines : “Old Joe ! kicking up behind and lieTnro, (And the mail bags) kicking up behind old Joe!' 1 Harper for .Mart'll. Harper’s New Monthly Magazine for March lias come to hand from the well known Bookstore of H. D. Noruell, on Broad Street. Its contents arc finely il lustrated. and are as follows : The Upper Mississippi; My Illusions Spare ; The Three Sons; Tropical Jour neyings; The Bladensbnrg Dueling Ground; Jack of all Trades, by Charles Keade, (concluded;) Progress of Wo manhood; Westmoreland; The Capt. Becalmed ; A Paper of All Sorts; Rouge etNoir: Every Wife her own Torment or; My Wife and I; The Virginians, by W. M. Thackeray ; The Statue in Clay ; Monthly Record of Current Events, &c., &c. The Reaction. Again we have the pleasure of con gratulating our people on the favorable and steady character of foreign advices —favorable at least to tbe South. Our staple and its manufacuture promise well. The plethora of mrney cannot find and will not he content with relief in moneyed transactions at from 1 1-2 to 2 per cent, per annum, and will seek its outlet m the channels of enterprise —commerce and speculation. Varied industry and investment can alone dif fuse, as’they can readily absorb, the safe employment of cash capital. Gold and cotton are fast restoring the commercial equilibrium and tbe mercantile rela tions of the world —and it is vain to presume tliat because confidence is not entirely restored, and, therefore credit not go abundant and facile, the produc tions of industry, in every form, will not be sustained in price. There is mo ney enough in tbe form 01 specie and its equivalents, such as good bank pa per and bills of exchange, to conduct on a cash basis (apart from any other forms or quantity of crediththe inter change of products, raw or manufac tured, at full and healthy rates. We have before us a coming illustration of the efficiency of the cash system. Nor is it inconsistent with speculation, whilst conducive to firmness. What safer investment can the cash millions of Europe, now a drug in the money, market, find than cotton and its manufac j kures, and holding them until a'tempol rarily balked consumption comes up t<| the exigency of the need for clothing I It is true that American manufacture! have for the last six months (durin the revulsion) taken but a small anil greatly diminished proportion of cot! ton ; yet for the next six they will anil must take largely, or be totally de l stroyed ; yet, if they do not, Europc will’increase their work and supply the deficit; and yet there is a manufactur ing capacity, under reviving confidence, to make up every where for lost time. Money has become 100 abundant fur the wheels of industry anywhere, hereafter to stop. Ail the material elements of sub stantial prosperity are untouched, al though the card-houses of fictitious credit have been blown away: and eve ry day is now illustrating this truth.— Credit doctors are behind the times, and credit is not the universal panacea. The gold of the Mines, cotton and wool, iron and breadstufis, silks and leather, sugar, tea and coffee, and, over ail, cash, have taken its place. If consumption tails oil in the East, the same cause which produced it, will also diminish the supply of the raw ma terial. The South never held so com manding a position, commercially, po litically and agriculturally as now.— Cnarlatm Evening News. Calico parties have been the rage this Winter in Chelsea, Mass. The last was given last Friday, when nearly two thou sand couples were present. r ,i.\ despatch in the dated cinuat^^BT East evening, about seven o’clock, the Methodist Protestant Church on Sixth-street, near Race, was partly des troyed by the explosion of defective gas pipes. At the hour mentioned, some fifteen persons were assembled in the base ment for meetings, when a strong odor was felt, and an effort made to discover the leakage. A light was applied to the metre, when the blaze burst forth, but was extingushed by a bucket of water. Quiet was almost restored, when the | explosion took place, tearing up the i floor, shattering the walls, and making a wreck of the basement. More than I half the pews in the Church were torn up, windows were blown out, and por -1 tions of the floor blown as high as the | ceiling. Doors were forced from the hinges, and blown into the street. The explosion was heard at a distance of Half a mile. The windows of many buildings in the vicinity were destroy ed. Eight or ten persons were severely wounded, and two or three of them are not expected to survive. Tlie PHllosoplier 1 * Stone. It is said that John Randolph once suddenly rose up in his seat in the House of Representatives, and cried out, “ Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker, I have I found the philosopher's stone It is, i Pay as you go.” John Randolph said many wise things, hut perhaps no one better than I this. “ Pay as you go,” and you can walk 1 the streets with a manly front, iook | mg at men in the eye without flinch ! ing. Yon will not have to cross the way to avoid a dun, or look into the shop windows to avoid seeing a credi tor. “Pay as you go,” and when you laugh, it will be a right honest and hearty one. “ Pay as you go,” ar.d when you sleep you will not dream of bills which you can’t pay, or wake up to credits which you cannot support. “ Pay as you go,”—and your home will be your home—happy, cheerful, contented, safe. Severe Kissing. “ Smocked liis tips, ami then he kissed her. Kissed so hard tic- raised a blister, And she set up a yell.”— A fashionable tailor in Philadelphia— as we learn from the )‘ress— is in file habit of exacting a kies from his sewing girls whenever they biir.g in a job. One girl, to whom his importunities for a kiss had become unendurable, and who —so says the account—would not allow this favor mainly because the tailor’s breath was flavored with tobacco, devis ed a most effectual remedy against further artnoyanue. Her twin brother donned iter clothes, and took a piece of work to tiie shop. The tailor beseecli ed for a kiss, tiie boy played tiie woman well, and behaved as natural as life, af ter a reasonable time, “ Whispering, ‘I will ne’er consent, 1 consented. She tailor was warned, however, tiiat when she kissed, she kissed hard. “So m«rh the better,” said tiie knight of the shears, “the harder the better;” so, wiping his mouth, taking deliberate aim., and approaching the tempting prize slowly, and appreciatingly, their faces met when tlio boy-girl seized the tailin's chin between two rows of sound j teeth, and held hint until his cries brought such a crowd around his shop that .thc police were compelled to inter- Iffirm Konihay. Washington, Feb. 24. The Navy! Department this morning received ad-! vices from Commander Page of the ship Germantown, dated Bombay, January 9th. He iiad learned from the Ameri can cousul, Dr. Ely, that our commer cial affairs are in a happy condition in all respects. The latter expressed him self much gratified at the appearance or one of our national vessels there as-! ter an interval of 15 years. Our trade was large there, and at that j time there were about fifteen ships load-! i ingand discharging. Commander Page had liecn visited by the senior captain of the Imaum of Muscat's navy, who was superintendending the building of a j i frigate for his government. The revolt in India was nearly at an j end. That is, Commander Page he-|| lievcs the fighting over, hut the Eng lish will, nevertheless be compelled to | keep a large force in India. They have! now about sixty thousand troops in dis- j fereut parts of the country. He had! ' visited the authorities of Bombay and i met with every national and personal! courtesy. j II What I Jinve Never Known.
