€ kiting Dispatch. AUGUSTA, GA: FOUR O'CUH'K P. M. PKII. .‘27, IBSS - Notice to Advertiser*. Advertisements for the Evemxu Dispatch must |‘ be hiutded in by eleven o'clock in the foreman, in ; order to appear the same day. The heavy pres- j sore of advertisements upon the columns of our | paper will not admit of their reception after the ,; hour named. ?Imirnl Plirar.nirnon. Wo fool safe in pronouncing the Wind j boy, now performing at Masonic Hall, j the most wonderful phenomenon in the world. That a little blind negro, with out instruction or tuition of any kind should be able to accomplish in music what the finestartists in the world would tind impossible, is, to say the least, re markable. We do not wish tobeunder- j stood kb intimating that. Tom's perform- j ance on the piano is perfect, or even ex- 1 traordinary in itself —butvredosay that, ; tak ?n in connection with all the civ-j ttuinstances, it is most wonderful. We saw some things last night which j must be seen to be believed, Mr. Ax- j dkkw Hett, a most excellent violinist of | our city, was present, and perfoimed— in connection with his band—a number ] of difficult polkas, waltzes and other pieces. Among them was an exceed-! ingly difficult German air, which Tom had never heard before. After some little hesitation, he went the piano and played it—not perfectly, of course—but better than nine tenths of the finest mu sicians could have done on first trial. After the lapse of half an hour, he was •again called on for the piece, and with out hesitation played it much bettei than at first. Now, this we consider wonderful It ■was remarkable that the hoy should have played so difficult a piece the first time, after having heard it hut once, and it was still more wonderful that he was able to play it instantly after having heard and played a number of other things calculated to confuse his mind. We repeat it, another won der is not to he found iu the world, and those of our citizens who do not go to •see him will miss a treat of no ordinary •character. Signor Him, Our readers will recollect that this evening presents positively the iast •haucetosee the great Magician and tTentriloquest. The Signor’s entertain ments are the most amusing and won derful of any we have ever attended— and since the price of admission tins been placed at 25 cents, we wonder that everybody and his wife does not go out to see-him. Make anote of the fact that the children and ladies are supplied with sugar plums,&c., free of charge. River Xevvs. The Iron Company's steamer Augusta left yesterday. The steamer \Y Jl. Stark expected to rn. rrow evening. ,<&■.— (j*7“ Harper's flagastm for March, lias been laid on oui table by Tuog. lu.'h- A.RDS & Sox. This number is profusely illustrated, and abounds, as usual, with .good stories and sketches. “The I'pper Mississippi,’’ the first article, is an illus trated account of one of the most inter esting portions of the country “Trop ical Journeying.;” is also a capital article introducing us to many Southern scenes which are not familiar to the generality of readers. Cuac. Ekade’s story, “Jack of all Trades,” is concluded; Tiiacke- KAv e “Virginians” is continued, the j author killing off one of his characters, Goouge Esmond, in Braddocks defeat. The Editor's Table, Easy Chair and lVaifcer, are full and complete. IcOMMieiU'ATED. I Ma. ’Simon :—The following order i will be observed in the Lectures before the “Young Men's Christian Associa tion” of this city, commencing on Sab- Bath evening next, at 7 1-2 o’clock, via:— Ist Lecture, by Rev. J E. Ryerson, i at Baptist Ch urch. 2nd Lecture, by Rev. J. S. Lamas, at j Christian Church. 3rd Lecture, by Rev. J. S Key, at St. I John's Church. 4 t’u Lecture, by Rev. Jos. I . Wilson, j D. 11., at St. John’s Church. 3th Lecture, by Rev. E. W. Spec it, St. James' Church. These Lectures, by a resolution of t:.Association, were requested of the several Pastors iu the Chronological or der of their Pastorates, commencing with the oldest, and may he expected at intervals of two weeks. It is very grat ifying to the members of this Associa tion to have the hearty co-operation, | which the Pastors of these churches ar j extending to this infant, yet powerful ‘ enterprise, and it is very desirable tfiat the entire community Bhould have the , beuelitof those Lecturesandsustain their men of God, in their efforts in our be half, so that through this and other menus, which may be employed in the subsequent history and progress of this Association, God’s glory may be evi- ( deutiy manifest by the enjoyment on enr part of the precious outpourings of Hie Holy spirit, and the revival of 1 “pureand undefiled religion” through- * t the whole community. i Shooting Through the Cars. I j Wo learn from a passenger on this ■ morning’s train, that some fiend in hu jman shape, fired through the down train, on the Western and Atlantic Rail • Road, last night. The hall passed through one of the cars, and danger- I jonsly near the breads of a gentleman I i and lady. (Ify" On Tuesday of last week, W. H. I i Bai.i.ew was elected President, A. Buz- I jzAuo, Cashier and J. M. Hobtox, Clerk | of the Branch of the Bank of Tennessee. I j at Athens. r a bill has passed botli houses of the Tennessee legislature allowingfurth er tinje of two years for the General 1 Government’s acceptance of the Hermi tage for the site of a military school. — gff* The Atlanta American says that j the monthly statement of the doings! jon the Western & Atlantic Railroad] , icon’t balance, and is, therefore relieved! |0 f all suspicion of fraud! ! gfT’The London Morning Vast saysj | that one of the principals in the late I attempt on Napoleon is an Englishmanl j named Thomas Allsop ; an ex-member ] of the Stock Exchange. From the New York Courier. \ Washington Correspondence. I There are indications that an active j correspondence and negotiation have ! been going on here for two weeks be tween the fourteen Southern Know- Nothings, and the Northern Fillmorites of which the basis is the defeat of Le comptonby a compromise of some sort. : The object is to save the relics of a par ty North, and to continuo the discus sions there between Republicans and Americans." 8 ° ° coo This movement is understood to have been organized during the present week. The following are the members relied upon : M«SBis. 1 (avis and Harris, of Md.; Gilmore, of N. C.; Ready. Maynard, and Zollicoffer, of Tennessee; Humphrey Marshall and Underwood, of Kentucky. The positions of Messrs. Hill and Trippe are not acturately defined. The annexation of Cuba is to follow] Lecompton as a test of Democracy The plan is well laid, and the island will be seized by the strong hand if Spain oh- j stinately refuses to sell. Hon. Benjamin F. Butler, of Mass.,! will be examined to-day by the Com-! mittec, on the alleged expenditure of; i SBO,OOO in purchasing votes for the: Tariff bill. He is Director in the Mid dlesex Company, and wishes to force! Mr. Wolcott to disgorge the $58,000 if lie did not expend the money among members. An effort will be made this week to procure the release of Mr. Wolcott on bail or by habeas corpus. The right of 1 the House to imprison in jail is much questioned. Another point is that a law was passed at the iast session for the punishment of contumacious witnesses, to which remedy it is contended the House ought to have appealed. I'oiigFcssionnl ProreiMflugs. Washington, Feb. 24. Senate.— Mr. Wilson introduced a resolution having ing in view an increase of the police i force of Washington. The bill for the admission of Kansas I und e h 1 1 1 eLe Co ill pt o n Constitution, report ed by the Senate Committee on Territo ries, was made the order of the day for Monday next. The resolutions of the Legislature of Tennessee, censuring Mir. Bell, of that State, for his vote upon the Kansas-Ne braska bill, were further discussed by Messrs. Johnson and Beil. Tile Senate then went into executive session. House. —The bill granting pensions to soldiers of the war of JBl2, etc., was debated, and postponed until Thursday, the lid of March. .The Committee on Public Accounts] reported a hill fixing the compensation! of officers of the House, which was re-! sered, with a minority report on the j same subject, to the committee on ways ] and means. ! The bill for the relief of sick and dis abled seamen was likewise referred. ! The House then went into committee ]of the whole on the Indian Appropria tion bill. Nothing of importance tran spired. Tile “N. l r . Journal of Commerce ” is iin good spirits about the Kansas Bill •and the Lecompton Coiirritation. We quote : “ Os the ultimate passage of the Bill through both Houses, we do not enter tain a doubt. Even if the opposition are able to present as strong a front as on .the. question of reference in the I House, the full vote of the friends of the (measure will be sufficient to carry it j handsomely through, i We congratulate the country on the ! prospect of an early adjustment of a i troublesome and perplexing topic, one jfiuitfiilof controversy, kv. That day ,we are pleased to sec so near at hand, I and we do not doubt that al! fair mi. d-j [ed men will agree with us in hoping [that it will prove the end of discussion] in Congress on the Slavery question.” * France. The Momteiir publishes the special' notification of the blockade of Canton River by the French fleet. Jt is said that some difficulty has aris en between the French Government and! the Swiss Confederation, on the subject! ! i! '' refugees. The Swiss arc said not 1 i to be disposed to confine the Refugees in j the interior. *"<&•• From South Ameiicu. Nkw \ ork, bob. l!4. —Advices from j kiver La Platte, via England, report a civil war raging there. Revelon had defeated the Montevideo troops and sur rounded the town. The English, French and Brazilian troops landed on the Bth: uit., which is the latest date. — He that has no bridle to his tongue.! hath no grace in his heart.
