Advertisements for the EvemnoDispatch must [ be h&ntied in by eleven o'clock in the forenoon, iti j order to appear the same day. The heavy pres sure of advertisements upon the columns of our paper will nourdmit of their reception niter ihe hour named. The ttcekly Dispatch. Our weekly for to-morrow is a great number. It contains the trial of Thomas O Kelley, complete, with n copious sum mary of interesting general intelligence, anti commercial news. Single copies 5 cents. Persons into whose hands this paper may fail are invited to examine it, and if they deem it worthy of support as a : cheap Southern Home Newspaper, their j aid is solicited in extending its circula- \ tion. To clubs it is only $1 a year—as cheap as any of the distant weeklies, 1 for which so much money has been sent out of the State. —- Northern E^-hnnge. All the Banks of this city Are selling Sight Exchange on New York, at 1-2 per cent premium. Carolina Rills* The banks of Augusta have all agreed to receive the hills of non-specie paying hanks of South Carolina in payment and deposite at half per cent discount. The notes of the Bank of Hamburg arc re ceived as the bills of the Augusta banks. Thuuks We arc under obligations to our friend C. G. Nowell, of Monroe, Walton, Co,, for a club of over 40 subscribers to our Weekly. Mr. Ivie of the same place has also obtained over 30. With a few such friends the Dispatch would attain its destined circulation of 20,000, in a short time. Who will follow their no ble example? *.». Fatal C'asunlt y. Yesterday afternoon, says the Chroni cle, of this morning, as a train of cars on the Charleston Railroad was passing through the city, Benjamin Silas, a boy about ten or twelve years of age, a son of a widow lady residing in the city, at tempted to jump in at the door of one of the cars, and fell across the track, when the wheels of the car passed over his body, and so injured him that he died soon after. We sincerely hope, that the melancholy fate of this little boy, will be a warning to other boys about the city, who are daily endanger ing their lives with these trains.- The trains are drawn by mules, and pass so slow, that the boys seem to think they can take any risk with im punity ; and all the efforts and warn ings of the city officers to prevent them, have proved unavailing. It would re quire the constant presence of an officer to protect them. A iilai'icetl Change. The Missouri Democrat brings us the particulars of a mass meeting held at Lawrence, Kansas, on the 13th tost., called, it says, “by members of the To peka and territorial legislatures, and other prominent citizens.'’ Gen. Lane i$ represented to have made a speech “in reply to the President’s message." The report of the committee on business excited much discussion. Gen. Lane offered a substitute; Judge Conway, a dissenting member of the committee, offered a substitute to Gen. Lane's sub stitute. The question then arose as to the manner in which the vote should he taken—whether by counties or rtm me. The chair decided that it was im practicable to vote after the manner pre scribed in the call for the convention.— It was then moved to indefinitely post pone all business before the meeting; which motion prevailed, and the meet ing adjourned. This is the latest effort of the agita . rs in Kansas to revive excitement in the Territory, and it lias resulted in a complete failure. The object of the convention was to express indignation against the President’s Lecompton mes sage. Some speeches were made ; but tlie meeting could not even agree upon a resolution. The fires of violence have burnt themselves out in Kansas, and ev ery indication justifies the conclusion that the people of that Territory are ready to accept the State govern ment created by the Lecompton consti tution. None of that indignation actu ally exists concerning which so much has been written by paid correspondents of abolition papers Even in Lawrence a mass convention could not agree upon a resolution, Wash. Union. A Very Plain Letter, The following letter was sent by a man to his son at college : •' Mi/ Dear Son .'—l write to send you two pair of old breeches, that you may have a new coat made of them. Also some new socks which your mothe has just knit by cutting down some of mine. Your mother sends you ten dollars without my knowledge, and for fear join would not spend it wisely, I have kept back half and only send you five. Yoi r mother and I are well, except that your si.-ter has got the measles, which we. -think would spread among the other girls, if Tom had not had them before, and He is the only one left. I hope you will do honor to my teachings ; if you do not you are an ass, and your mother and myself are your affectionate pa rents. " — A loafer who had been fined several weeks in succession for getting drunk, said coolly to the Judge that he should taken him by the year at a reduced rate:. A Pennsylvainia editor, in an appeal to his patrons, says: ‘The editor wants grain, porici tallow. <,indies, whisky, linen, heca-jsx. wool and any thing else that b? of; eat.' * o From the Richmond Dispatch. THIRTY-FIFTH CONGRESS, FIRST SESSION. Washington, March, 1. SENATE. I ’ A communication was received from ! thy Legislature of Kentucky, offering |to raise a regiment of volunteers foi | Utah. Several memorials were presented 5 from the Legislature of lowa, asking for grants of land for railroad purposes. . Mr. King reported a bill granting , Home arsenal to the State of New Y'ork. ( I The hill passed. i Mr. Green, of Missouri, called-up the ' bill for the admission of Kansas. Messrs. Gwin and Broderick, of Cali- . fornia, objected, on the ground that the i Pacific Railway Hill had priority. Senator Henderson took his seat to day. HOUSE. Messrs. Seward, Harris, of Illinois, Grow, Curtis, and Bishop were a; poin ted a committee to investigate the; charges against O. B. Matteson, of New ! York. ; Mr. Harris was excused from serving, |at his urgent request, . | Resolutions were received from the legislature of Washington Territory, j declaring that Gov. Stevens’ proclama-l : tion of martial law was patriotic, and requisite for the peace of the Territory. Mr Sherman, of Ohio, introduced a j resolution, which was adopted, calling for information as to whetner money . j was paid from the treasury, during the ' ! year ending June last, for defraying the ’ expenses of the Legislature or the al leged Legislature of Kansas; and if so, under what act of Congress, and from ! what fund. , I Mr. Mason, of Kentucky, reported ; back the bill fixing the compensation of I clerks, messengers and laborers of| [ ttie House ; also, fixing the number of each. ' The bill was debated by Messrs. Spin ■ ner, Warren and Ruffin. The House adjourned pending th» discussion. [second dispatch.] . The Senate agreed to take up the Kansas hill —Mr. Green gave notice that , he would introduce a substitute, admit r ting Minnesota and Kansas in the same bill. During his speech on the ! subject, Mr. Green stated that he had ' just received advices that Gen. Whit i j field and others had been driven from t j Kansas bytlireatsbf assassination coming i from free soilers. Mr. Coliamer defended the Emigrant j Aid Societies; but before he concluded | his speech, the Senate adjourned. IVSilis and his Old Dress Suit. ! Willis, on his return to Idlewildfrom: ! a day or two’s visit to N. York writes in II the Home. Journal, one of his chatty j [letters to “the Brigadier,” from which! , | we clip the following characteristically I [ told experience: But, apropos of dress and its limits, : let uie tell you of a tritle in my second evening’s experience, on this visit to | town, which, simple as it was, made me! 1 stand very uncertain in mv shoes. To I 3 the hypochrondriac, whose conscious j | identity is occasionally disturbed, it will he a drop of the comfort of com-! 3 panionship to here record it. s Calling upon Un old friend, in the! . course of the day, I was urged to go to j a party in the evening, where were to he gathered the picked-few dom of a' 1 very intellectual circle—among them! i one or two whom I was particularly in- j _ j terested to see. My heart was willing, i but my wardrobe was weak; for, ex-1 • [peering to be away from home but a! , couple of days, I had only my country' habiliments of shooting-jacket andj rough Housers; but, as I reluctantly : refused, a thought came over me. In a j closet of my brother's house, up town, I there shoula be (moths and accidents ex-j cepted) a well-worn suit of many years I , ago, into which I, perhaps, might still! . insert myself. Up to packing them! away, a (reservation from the usual de-| : cline and fall into the beggar’s wallet: I which they owed to a tender memory of! , the belovod voices to which the un- j ' conscious buttons had listened in their ■ time,) that dress coat and pantaloons) . had, at similar gatherings, figured pre-1 . scntably. My weight, I believed, was about the I same as in their day, though I had been j . since, of course, wedged open consider-t p ably by daily bestriding of the saddle,) [ and am, thereby, perhaps, split a trifle| , higher than those early pantaloons! would bo likely to remember—but, save) tliis, (and the wrinkles out of their) reach, 1 was a case of rather unconi- ] moil statuquoA ty. At any rate I would j . try. If the integuments were extant,! !1 1 could put them on—go up and down) i stairs in them confidentially at my bro- j I ther’s—test their Rip Van Winklitudej ! by private experiments of all the eve-1 );ning's varied probabilities---and, if the: ,! rehearsal were satisfactory, I would ap-| |jpear, in the costume so rigidly exacted) . j by society, (black bi-forks and swallow-! .! tail,) at my friend’s hospitable house, j The closets were rummaged. . j The departed clothes made their ap [ parition hanging upon an affectionate nail, “as was their custom of an eve ,! niug,” and open to occupancy. I got in them. They fitted me, as of yore. Experiments all triumphant! The threads which for years had stood the . pull of a buttoned up heart’s hidden , perturbations, were stii! constant to their trust. I went to the party—a most charming collection of people some of whom i had not seen for many years. Tlie Mormon* preparing (o Move. i at.
