Advertisements for the Evem.vii Dra-ATOlmust he liahded in by eleven o'clock in the forenoon, in order to appear th - .•nine day. The heavy pres" sore of advertisement.-; upon the columns of our paper will not admit of their reception after the hour named. LOCAL MATTERS. Fire. At 7 o’clock last night an alarm of fire was caused by the burning of a sta ble between Ellis and Greene streets, above Centre, belonging to the estate of William Harper. The stable was con tiguous to wooden buildings, to which the fire was spreading, and the residence of Mr. Gross was in imminent danger, but in fifteen minutes from the moment of the alarm, the firemen had extinguish ed the flames. Their promptness pre vented a serious conflagration. Blind Tom, tile Pianist. The manager of this wonderful musi •al prodigy has consented to remain un til Wednesday next, when he will posi tively leave for a tour in the towns and cities of South Carolina. We have heard but one opinion expressed by; those who have visited his Soirees here' —that of astonishment andaawe. The music as it rolls from the piano at his touch, seems like a voice from another world —so utterly incapable is he of mu sical tuition, and so perfect is his recol lection and executian of pieces that he has once heard. No arbitrary rules con trol him, and while he plat-s the most difficult tunes, he often adds the most novel and touching variations and play; several pieces of his own compo sition. Among these, are what the rain, and the birds say to him, in which he has set to music the pattering of the rain on the roof, and the varied notes of the birds, as he hears them in the woods. He delights in all the harmonies of na ture-loves to be in the woods among ] the singing birds and the chirping squir-j rels, and yet on ail subjects, save mu-i sic, is idiotic. He is worth - seeing, as one of tlie strangest of nature's phe nomena. Theatre* The bill at Concert Hall to night isan attractive one to lovers of comedy.— Mr. and Mrs. Florence, who have ac quired a wide reputation in this coun try and Europe, make their first and only appearance, and will he sustained by the entire company. Euphonious Encomiums. Augusta is not as large, perhaps, as | some other American cities, but it is a I question with ns whether any of them contain more "purlieus;” and more eu phonious designations for these purlieus We append such of them as we wot of, ■commencing with the upper part of the •city, and going down ; Dublin, Canaan, Poverty Range, Pig Tail, Holland, Shakerag, and Pincbgut. Springfield and Bugsboro’ have had j their day, and other regions must flour-• ish over them ! - Proceedings of tire City Connell. The Southern Citizen , in the course of a ’ ■ reply to objections urged against that, . paper, that it was too Southern, says : 1 “ Everything that has befallen us| since our first number was issued, con firms us in the belief that parties in this country, arc fast resolving into two— the party of the North and the i party of tlie South ; that tlie North Is I concentrating its forces and choosing its ground ; and that the day is coming 1 (say in the year 1860) when neither the National Democracy, nor any other combination of national politics, will be j able to save these Southern States from falling under the preponderant power, and so becoming and remaining thence forth a tributary province. The issue is not Slavery or Anti-Slave ry. There is no danger whatever to our institution. Nobody at the North cares about Negroes. On the contrary*, once j the political and commercial supremacy jis assured, tlie more negroes - .ve have, the better we shall please our Northern brethren, because we shall make more produce for them to trade upon. In the meantime, ‘ Slavery ’ answers for a cry I and a watchword.” ■ ——— . From Havana. The New Orleans papers contain dates from Havana, by the steamship Phila delphia, to tlie 26th ult. The season is one of unusual gaiety in Havana, and the carnival had been celebrated with unusual sumptuousness Great drought has been prevailing at Matanzas during last month. A rial per keg has been charged for water, and it could only with difficulty be pro cured at that price. There had been! heavy rain in Havana lately, however, and it was believed to have been pretty general. ».*,. liootH for Larlics. One item in the wardrobe of the! Princess Royal of England on her mar | ri:\gc should attract the attention of l American women and be adopted by j them. A part of her ‘fit out’ was 321 pair of boots, which are described as useful and solid. Some of them, in tended for rough walking, were provi ded with treble soles. Though an innovation of a custom which has prevailed with the fair sex I since 1633, this would be a change de voutly wished, and suggestive of intel lectual advancement us well as pruden tial regard for the health of the body, •([ually as becoming as symmetry of form, ruddy cheeks, or flowing tresses. The pit-a-pat glide of a damsel in slip pers is as bewitching, we' know, as the kip of a fawn, but like a crape shawl, liould yield to tlie season, the most fastidious ogler preferring the rough 1 'rampof boots in midwinter, though a less bounding swell in crinoline. In leed, we are gratified to say. that hero bouts the example of the Princes Roy 11 was anticipated. Roots arc fashiona ble.—Baltimore Clipper. Arithmetic! it ( Question. The following story is told as having j really occurred in Richmond on the day , subsequent to the uncovering of Craw ford's equestrian statue of Washington : i Two blacks passing through the park felt to criticising the work. “I tell you, j sir, God A’mighty killed do man dat ! made dat boss ; de Lord aint gwine to ’low sieh tings—its too liateral. God was jealous obhim.” _ We doubt whether tlie marble is des tined ever to receive a higher compli ment. Mrs. Crawford is now in Rich mond : ’tis said she hurst into tears when the statute was uncovered on the 22d inst. A printer who was recently filling’ bv his sweetheart, went to the'office anil tried to commit suicide with the ‘shoot ing slick,’ but the thing wouldn’t go off. ’file ‘devil’ wished to pacify him, and told him to peep into tlie sanctum, where the editor was writing duns to ; delinquent subscribers. He says that picture of despair ‘reconciled him to j liis fate.’ Kaasns Don’t Pay. Verily, this doctrine of non-interven tion seems to be now practically under stood to be that the affairs of the Ter ritories belong to all outsiders, individ ually and collectively; and popular sovereignty implies that the people of the Territories are to be controlled by the States, through their Representa tives in tlie aggregate, and by each State, through its Governor, Legislature, and Conventions, individually ; and that this control extends to all future , time. We had all better attend more , to the affairs of our own people, and less jto those of our neighbors. This Kansas j embroglio don't pay.
