LOCAL MATTERS.
Exchange.
In consequence of the reduction in
the rates of premium on New York ex
change, in Charleston, to that current in i
Augusta, the Banks of this city to-day
rescinded their resolution of last week,
to require a discount of it per cent, on
the notes of the suspended Banks of
South Carolina.
Mailamt Young.
This remarkable person is still at the
United States Hotel, where she will re
main three days more. The curious
would do well to give her a call, for,
from our own experience, we are confi
dent she will give satisfaction.
In a Bad Box.
In passnig up the steps of the City
Hall a day or two ago, our ears were
greeted by the most impatient and dis
tressing noise, which we soon found to '
proceed from one of the inmates of the
city hoarding house, in the basement of
the building. A folorn looking indi
vidual was leaning against the grate,
with one arm outside in which he held
a piece of plank two feet long, which he
applied ferociously to the wall and to
the coal dirt under the window, while
he yelled, stamped and cursed vocife
rously. As wo approached he became
quiet, and adapted a more pathetic and
intercessory tone. Said he, “For God’s
sake, stranger, help me! I live here in
town—have a family here who have
nothing to eat; they’ve had me locked
up here two days—what for, I don’t
know, for I’ve done nothing, and am
cold, hungry, and (to use his own
words) most d—n dry, besides. Do use
your influence to get me out of this place, \
if you please, stranger, for I do believe |
I shall choke to death.’ ’
Promising to do all we couhl for him
we left the window, and hereby respect
fully present his case to the tender con
sideration of the city fathers.
Tile tYendltr.
The first real snow of the season, com
menced falling yesterday eveuing.
. There tvas not enough of it to make
sleighing, or to obstruct the cars on our
Railroads. This morning it was feeling
ly visible, and overcoats and mutfiers
were in demand.
As tire day wore on the fleery old
gentlemen sneeked off, as though
ashamed of having attempted so unsea
sonable a feak, leaving the field clean
to old Boreas, who owed us a visit about
this time, and being fresh from the
North, he has clearly made his presence
known, and now we have not the slight
est objection to his taking his leaf.

GROVER & BAKER’S
SEWING MACHINES,
H EASONS why the Grover & Baker
i Machine is,universally preferred for family
11 sewing:
1. It is more simple and easier kept in order
than any other Machine.
2d. It makes a seam which will not rip or
ravel, though every third stitch is cut.
! .‘M. It sows from two ordinary spools, and thus
! all trouble of winding thread is avoided, while
i the same machine can be adapted at pleasure,
| by a mm' charvje of spool, to all varieties of work.
I " 4th. The same machine runs sill:, linen thread,,
I and common spool cotton with equal facility,
i f»th. The seam is as «las tic as the most elastic
fabric, so that it is free from all liability to break
in washing, ironing, or otherwise.
