LOCAL MATTERS.
Panorama of the llussiau War.
This exhibition, which was advertised
to open to-night, lias been postponed
till to-morrow night. The subject is j
one of great interest, and from reports
we have seen in papers where it liasj
been on exhibition, we expect a rare
treat.
jjsrf We learn from the Constitutionalist, j
that the receipts of Cotton, Flour and j
Grain, at the Depot of tiie Georgia ]
Railroad, for the month of February I
was as follows:
Cotton 34.050 bales.—Fleur G,G59
barrels —Graiu 45,140 bushels.
The Utneral Assembly.
In the Dispatch to-day will be found an
account of the closing proceedings of the
General Assembly on Saturday, that
body having given up the ghost about 10
p. M., and been immediately summoned
back to its mortal tenement by a trump
et blast from Gov. Wise. We give also
the Proclamation which was read before
both branches of the legislature at the
moment they thought themselves de
funct, and which gave them another
chance to perform their duty to the
State. The document elicited applause j
in both houses. It fell upon some ears j
like a sudden summons to judgment, |
but it isonly a call to the unconverted j
to repent of their sins and lead a new
life After the adjournment, avail was
made in the House of Delegates for Gov. j
Wise, and lie made a stirring speech,
which was received with enthusiasm by
the “resurrected” patriots. His re-]
marks, though entirely impromptu,
could not have been better timed or bet- j
ter conceived. The applause they drew j
forth from the Hall was re-echoed with
great energy from the galleries. It wasi
a novel and exciting scene, both Hous-1
es crowded l>y members and spectators,,
who listened with amassing interest.—

Decrease of Importations.
The Boston Traveller, of the 3d inst..
sayfi :
Since January Ist the importations of
foreign goods at this port have fallen off
more than fifty per cent. The imports
last year averaged more tlmn one mil
lion dollars each week ; thus far this
year they have been only £458,000 per
: ,vcek. We believe at the present time
there is hut one ship (the Cicero) on tin
way to this port from Liverpool. With
the exception of quite a number of
ships from the East Indies, there are n<-
large vessels bound here at the present
time, and those vessels on the way had
loaded, and, in many case< sailed, be
fore orders from here forbidding ship
merit conld reach him. A few months
hence blit two or three ships will be cn
the way to this port from the East In
dies. With the exception of a few
chemicals and West India and Mediter
ranean goods, and some few other arti
cles which may become scarce in tin
coming season, we do not . need fresh
imports, and we trust that the aver
age of our foreign imports per week lor
the rest of 1858, will not exceed the
average of three months already past.
An Aikrnsns Father's Advice te iUs
Son.
Bob, you are about leaving home for
etrarige parts. You’re going to throw
jne out of the game, and go it alone.—
The odds is against you, but remember
always that industry and perseverance
-are the winning cards—they are the
“bowers.” Book laming and all that
-sort of thing will do to till up with
like small trumps, but you must hav<
the bowers to back ’em, else they ran i
worth shucks. If luck runs again you
pretty strong, don’t cave in and look
like a sick chicken on a rainy day, but
hold your head up, and make believe j
you are flush of trumps. They won’t
play so hard again you. I’ve livd and
traveled around some, Bob, and I’ve
found out as soon as folks thought you
held a weak hand, they’d all buck again
you strong. So. when you’re sortei
weak, keep on a bold front, but play
cautious. Be satisfied wit!* a pint.
Many's the hand I've seen euchred
’case they played for too much. Keep
your eyes well skinned, Bob: don’t let
“era “nig” you. Recollect the gamt
lays us much with the head as with the
hands.
Be temperate; never get drunk, foi
then no matter how good your hand,
you won’t know how to play it; both
bowers and the ace won’t save you. for
there’s sai tain to be a “miss deal” or
something wrong. And another tiling.
Bob, (this was spoken in a low tone,)
don't go too much on the wo in-n ;
queens is binder poor cards; the more
you ha re of ’em, the worse for you ; you |
might have three, and nary a trump. 1
don’t say di caid ’em all ; it you get
hold of one that’s a trump, it’s all good
and there's sarfcin to bo one out of four
And above aB, Bob, be honest; -never
take a man’s trick wot don’t belong to
you, nor “ slip” cards, nor “ nig,” foi
then you can’t loot your man in tin
face, and when that is the case there i
no fun in the game : it’s regular ‘•cut
throat.” So now, iiob, farewell; re
member wet I tell you, and you’ll lie
sure to win, and if you don’t sarves you
right if you get “ sk miked.”

The Cheapest Illuminating Gas ever Discovered. \
HAVIND purchased the Patent-right;
for the State of Georgia, and Edgefield Dis- j
tin t, S. 0., for making Illuminating
‘ GAS FROM WOOD AND WATER, j
by Choate & Tyler’s process, we are prepared to
sell individual or public rights for the use of \
said Patent.
Among the many advantages these works have
over all others, arc the following :
Ist. The abundance and cheapness of the ma
terial from which the Gas is made, viz :
PINE WOOD AND WATER.
2d. The durability of the works when com
pared with others.
3d. Thesimplicitv of the apparatus and process
Any negro may be taught to make the Gas
perfectly in a very short time.
Gas manufactured under this patent has been
in uninterrupted use at Kirkpatrick & Leitner's
house, at Berzelia, on the Georgia Railroad, siuce
July last, where it may be seen. They have a
very superior light for one fourth the trick of
Gas made from Rosin Oil.
Any communications addressed to either of the
, undersigned, at Augusta, will meet with prompt
1 attention.
