' At a called meeting of a portion of the citizens of Augusta, held last night, at the Augusta and Savannah Railroad Depot, for the purpose of organizing a new Fire Company, to be called Fire Company, Clinch No. 2, the follow ing business was transacted. Mr. John Stubbs was unanimously called to the Chair, and D. T. Castleberry requested to act as Secretary. The meeting then proceeded to elect officers and the fol lowing persons were unanimously elect ed : John McCann, Captain. Sam’b Whitman. Lieutenant. L. <i. Sirlby, Pipeman. W. Fuller, Assistant Pipeman. A. Younge, Treasurer. D. T. Castleberry, Secretary. The following Committees were then named : On Bye-Laws. Mullen, McCabe, McCann. On Uniform. —Nayey, Mulen, McCann. Monthly meetings to be held 2d Sat urday in every month. The meeting then adjourned to meet at the engine bourse at 5 o'clock on Saturday eveniug next for the purpose of moving the engine to its new quar ters. D. F. Castleberry, Secretary. From the Southern Banner, (Athens.) Franklin College A Model Cories poudent. A correnpondent of the Augusta Dis patch, writing from this place under date of Feb. 27th, and signing himself “Buck Horn,’’ communicates in that paper of the 2nd ir st., the following startling in telligence in regard to the present con dition of Franklin College. “I understand, in the streets to-day, several of the students of Franklin Col lege are selling off their books, etc., and are going to leave. 1 lie cause ot their leaving I was not able to learn. It was also whispered to-day there would not be more than twenty-five students in the College, at the next commencement. I hope this is not true ” If “ Buck Horn ” was really sincere in the hope expressed in the concluding portion of the paragraph that, “ this is not true,” we think that he might have taken the pains to investigate 4 he mat ter thoroughly, before giving publicity to such a report. If, on the other hand, hi- “ . hope ibis is not true," really meant, (as it sometimes does,) “I am glad of it,” why all we have to say to Buck Horn, is, that he has overshot the mark this time, and that his attempt to injure the College call be very easily neutralized by asim pic statement of the truth as obtained from those wtioknov.-, “ whereof they speak.” The “books, etc.,” to which he alludes as being sold off, belonged to some of the last graduat ing class, and not those who are now, or have been connected with the Col lege since the beginning of the present term. That *• whisper,” which “Buck Horn ” heard, must have intended for his ear alone, for we have not been able to find any one else who heard it. Only two'students, have disconnected them selves with the-Col lege since January, and all the officers of the College are unanimous in their testimony as to the spirit of contentment shown l>y thestu dents. and the smoothness and harmony with which everything moves on. “Buck Horn,".is singularly at fault *too, in hie statement of facts about the trial of the new engine which we no ticed last week. He says that, “ the new engine threw water somethingover two hundred feet, beating the old one fifty feet.” The Chief Engineer of our File Department says that, “ the new en gine threw w ater one kindred and seventy feet, beating the old one silty fed. “Buck H rn ' should either post himself bet ter the next time lie writes for the pa pers. or —not write at all. J REMARKS.—It will, no doubt, cause some sur prise among those who are not close observers that our southern markets are dull and dcclin iug under the favorable news from Fur ope. It should be borne in mind that the receipts at all I our ports are rapidly increasing. In New Or leans alone last week they were *0,673 bales [against 39,804 for the corresponding week last [year. The total receipts in that city since Ist of [September have been 1,191,258 bales, against m. 274,120 to the same date last year ; and the ■lecreaso at all the ports at latest dates has been ■•educed to about 3G0,000 bales on those of last vear. It is apprehended by buyers that tue in ■rcasing receipts at our port* will depress prices In Liverpool before cotton purchased now could lie sent forward. Whatever the result may be, Ibis will prevent our markets from keeping pace Iwith the inflation in Liverpool, until it is ascer | ained to be permanent. | Cotton—ln our last review v e reported the I ?ale of 6234 bales, for the week ending Thursday I liter noon, March 4th. Prices were irregular, I ind we quoted Bp, to 11 % cents as the extremes I or Inferior to Middling Fair. | The sales reported on Friday amounted to 1 1798 bales, and the market had receded to the rates current before the steamer’s news. 1 On Saturday, the report reached 1769 bales, and Middling Fair was quoted 11 .'4f55)l 13* ceufe. On Monday, the Europa’s accoui ts raised tue views of buyers, and sales reached only 528 bales, at unsettled prices. On Tuesday, our report reached 1866 bales, at an advance of % cent. On Wednesday, we reported sales of 2817 bales, at prices ranging from 11 % to ll%c for the better grades. On Thursday, 783 bales wore sold at easier prices. Total sales of the week, 9560 bales, being the largest sales of the season. Groceries— I Trade is beginni gto assume more activity, though country merchants are not yet buying very freely, and the spring trade lias not [ fairly opened. Our merchants are receiving ac cessions to their stocks, and are in good condi tion for furnishing the trade at advantageous prices. Molasses—Moderate supply in market, at 26 1 to 28c for Cubas; Syrup, 40*. 4 Sugars—Market Arm. See table. Coffee—Market well supplied, and owing to * the advance and light stocks in the heavy mar kets, prices are very firm. Rick—We quote 3% to 3%c. 5 Bacon—The supply is not very heavy, and prices are unchanged. Several thousand pounds . j have been sold during the week at rates report > ed in our list of prices. Salt—Tbis article continues dull and un : changed. Lard—Prices range from 10 to 11 cents. Good supply. Flour—The supply is heavy and trade dull. Prices are the same. Grain, of every kind, remains unchanged. Corn—Scarce, with limited demand. We quote Go to 75c. Whiskey—Supply good, and pri.es unchanged. We quote 26fa)30 cts. Hay—North River $1 to 51.25. Dull. Tropical Fruits—Scarce. Oranges $4.50 per box ; Lemons. $4. Feathers—Den and not equal to the supply. Prices range from 36 to 37c H>- Exchange—Our Banks are selling Exchange on New York at % per cent. Freights—Our River is still in good boating order. Freights remain unchanged.
